Here in San Francisco we have ABC local anchors dying of heart attacks and these people died because of stress apparently? Pete Wilson, Jerry Jensen, Marc Gibson, Ken Matz and Joyce Shank. I heard Joyce Shank of KGO spent some time at WABC.
Whats sad with this video is that KGO never mourned Roger Gimsby's death in 1995. Roger was a legend on KGO in the 1960's before ABC sent him to WABC. Roger Gimsby made KGO the best ABC O&O ever. He also inroduced NewsBeat and news scene format to SF. Grimsby was the biggest critic of the Tabloidalism. If Grimsby was here today he would blast the Cable Tabloid networks.
Roger Grimsby hated that channel 7 had a gossip columnist on the regular news. Once after a story about garbage, he segued to Rona Barret by saying "Speaking of Garbage".
What is it with ABC local and national anchors and dying of Lung Cancer?
First, it was Roger Grimsby; now it's Peter Jennings (ABC National News).
Jennings also worked alongside Bill Beutel on GMA's predecessor AM America, and I assumed Jennings and Beutel spoke off-duty even when AM Amercia got canned.
Nonetheless - Jennings of ABC National News, and the tag team of Beutel and Grimsby of ABC Local (Eyewitness News) - GOD REST YOUR SOULS!
You actually think those great voices were completely natural? Jennings was a known smoker, and I have airchecks of Bill Beutel between breaks, puffing away.
As for AM America, whatever contact between Bill and Peter was probably minimal. As far as we've seen, news was handled like it was in the early days of GMA - main presenters in New York, newsreader in Washington.
Also remember - just because the news team is presented as a family doesn't mean they like each other very much.
Look at the West coast ABC Station KGO-TV in San Francisco Pete Wilson died of Heart Attack, Marc Gibson from heart attacks and Jerry Jensen from cancer. This was not just a WABC and Abc news issue.
That was part of it. The other part may've had to do with Grimsby ruffling quite a few feathers over the years at WABC, vs. Beutel's being more "stable" (and stabilizing) behind-the-scenes.

The announcement, or part 1, aired on the noon broadcast. It was a package done by Beutel. He was on camera to intro the package.

You forgot former ABC News and WABC anchor Roger Sharp. He died of Lung Cancer in April 20, 1986.

I.I.N.M., there was more "EWN" screen time devoted to Mr. Beutel's own death nearly 11 years later.

But you have to expect that considering how much longer Bill Beutel was at WABC than Roger Grimsby was.

A rather crude, but...fitting tribute to a down-to-earth man who gave us the shit around town as it was. Thanks, man.
