Your lucky guy growing up on the coast.

My wife and I grew up in a mining village west of Sudbury Ontario.

The smoke stacks killed all the trees and it looked like Nagasaki after the big explosion.

One day in 1969 Nasa showed up in our back yard.

Apparently it was so ugly that it resembled the moon :0(

We will retire to the sunshine coast in 4 1/2 years to see all beauty and nature or Salt Spring ??? :0)

  • Be prepared for lots of rain in the winter, and wind in the fall, i dont actually mind the rain though its actually nice in its own way, but the wind does some damage, it is a rain forest, spring and summer are awesome

  • I think you should brand yourself as a tourism ambassador, there are so many people (aged 25-45) here in Vancouver who don't know about the Sunshine Coast and would love to rent cabins and go for dinner and shop at the local stores! I think that the business association could profit a lot from the way you present the Sunshine Coast! They should be pooling together and paying you to be an interactive information source! PG

  • Duane has a heart so filled with spirit we are blessed to have such a great resident on the Coast. One that gives back, volunteers with so many groups, embraces us daily with his photography and is a wonderful media link through out the Province for the Coast. Duane even had the courage to run for council this year and although he was not elected the numbers tell us he is liked and respected. Shannon Kewley

When Duane is searching for some unique and amazing stories he is always embracing each and every local with such dignity and class. • Duane is always interested in what is going on in the community and shows up everywhere taking pictures and posting them for all to use for free. I appreciate that Duane gives so freely of his talents and time. Whenever I ask him to consider taking a picture for the paper, he responds immediately and positively - in fact, he has taken pictures of our groups of mature workers several times which has made the participants feel very special. Anonymous

  • COMMUNITY SPIRIT nomination: I hope you will give him your serious and sincere consideration for this award. It would be a small payback for the conscious effort he makes toward realizing his personal philosophy of giving through work. I think very few of us try so wholeheartedly and diligently to live and act out our personal beliefs in such a manifest way. Howard Katz

  • If I recall his sentiments correctly -- it's his belief that people seeing what other people do in their daily lives helps to bind them together better. I know he's expressed it far more eloquently than that, but that's the basic idea. At any rate, through the vehicle of his photography he's a tireless chronicler of what community groups are about on a daily basis here on the Sunshine Coast. Howard Katz

  • One of the key tenets of Duane's philosophy of life, as encompassed in his business. is to strive to give back to the community far more than the community has given to him. I've had several conversations with Duane on this score, and I've seen it in action in the number of community events he attends weekly and the vast array of photographs he takes of community groups in action here on the Coast. Howard Katz

  • His photographs appear regularly in The Local newspaper, in local movie theatre displays, and in local art displays. Duane's bubbly personality contributes directly to the fun of many events, and his recent political aspirations demonstrate his interest in giving back to the community. Bill Forst

  • Duane is always very enthusiastic about community events. His photography often captures the true spirit of this wonderful community. Indeed, his ability to read the mood of an event and capture that spirit, I would suggest has contributed to the incremental growth of arts and culture on the coast in the past few years. Bill Forst

  • Duane has been an incredible support to the volunteer work that I am involved in. Whenever he is asked to come out to Sunshine Coast Youth Soccer Association events or to Special Olympics BC - Sunshine Coast events, he is always eager to attend. He has gone to great lengths to shuffle his schedule to attend our events. Laurie Milller

  • I believe that Duane has and will continue to exemplify community spirit on the Sunshine Coast. He brings to the table something more valuable than a financial contribution, he gives this community his time, his art and most importantly his heart. Every day. Rikki Bradley

  • I met Duane Burnett as a former actress attending the 35th Anniversary of The Beachcombers at Gibsons. He was SUCH a bright, kind and inspirational fellow who brightened my day and who took some incredible photographs - one of which I am currently using on my business cards and flyers because of the wonderful comments the photo consistently gets. Rosemary Storm

  • COMMUNITY SPIRIT nominations continued: Duane has roots established decades ago on the Sunshine Coast, and has chosen this area as his home. Hence he encourages the many amateur and professional presentations here on the coast. As a choir director and an individual who is very aware of the overall artistic community here on the coast, I encourage you to support Duane in this category. Joy McLeod

  • He has also offered his wonderful photos to local government organizations to be used in promoting our beautiful area to the tourist trade. In addition, Duane makes himself available for daytime or evening events, and even attempts to cover multiple events at once, as our summertime schedule here on the "premiere vacation spot for Greater Vancouver" dictates. Joy McLeod

  • Without interfering with our preparation for an event he is able to quickly align groups for a phenomenal "shot" which he then provides at a very nominal charge for future promotion. This is indeed a valuable asset to the community groups on the coast who have access to professional photography for their advertising at a fraction of the cost of a "sitting fee". Joy McLeod

  • He has supported countless organizations on the Sunshine Coast through the donation of quality photos for publicity and fund raising endeavours. To numerous amateur and professional artistic groups, a photo by Duane Burnett equates quality advertising for their organizaiton. Duane brings an energy to his photography that shows a glimpse of himself but more importantly his love of the Sunshine Coast people and places. Kim Tournat

  • The photography of Duane Burnett captures the Spirit of Sunshine Coast residents as much as his photography illustrates the beauty of the Sunshine Coast landscapes. Duane's photos portray Sunshine Coast residents at work; while at play; or contributing to all aspects of life on the Coast. Duane has the gift of bringing out the best in both people and places. Kim Tournat

  • He gives every photo shoot his all whether it is a paying gig or volunteer gig. It makes no difference to him. His dedication, perfection, and good humour is to be rewarded by the joy and smiles he brings to others - often putting his own life on hold. Duane certainly deserves to win - to be recognized for all he has done for our community. Kathleen Kyler

  • Duane started his career as a photo journalist as a volunteer. He spent many dedicated hours to ensure that all events were covered with no expectation for a return in any manner. Duane continues his career without any hesitation to how far, weather, cause, etc. Kathleen Kyler

  • Since moving onto the Sunshine Coast in 2002, Duane's work has been everywhere it seems, telling the stories of families, events, fairs, festivals, and so much more. The first time I noticed his name was on the movie screen of the Ravens Cry before a movie started. Sitting there I really got the flavour of the Coast and learned what was going on in our new neighbourhood. Sharon Jones

  • I work for a non-profit organization, and I volunteer with a few others. Duane is almost always there to photograph the events we put on. He has always worked hard to fit events into his schedule, before, during and after to make sure we get the maximum amount of publicity. I was working on one project, and Duane was just driving by to another shoot, when he spotted us. He stopped, took pictures, and had them published in the newspaper a week later. Gord Leslie

  • Duane's commitment to visually capturing the rich diversity of the communities on the Sunshine Coast is evident both in his website and in the images that appear weekly in the Local. It seems that no matter what event you go to on the Sunshine Coast, Duane is there documenting it for us. He has taken time to attend and photograph several community fund raising events for a non-profit group which I belong to and the relationships I have witnessed developing with Duane's help are widespread. He helps to bring many ages and persons together with laughter and respect. Samantha Mills

  • Duane has gone out of his way to help the arts community. He comes to rehearsals in the evening, takes pictures and does lovely write-ups about upcoming events. Without his cooperation some productions, who cannot afford a lot of paid advertising, would go unnoticed in the papers. Anonymous

  • He is such a huge empathetic walking heart, celebrating and sympathizing with everyone as the occasion demands, and you can tell he FEELS it and it's not just for show. That's what makes the difference between the photos he takes and all the others. Duane IS community spirit in action, all day, every day. Laurie McConnell

  • not only does he take thousands of community photos every year - capturing and chronicling our region more consistently than any other photographer or organization - and share them, he brings out the best in his subjects. I've seen him time and time again bring out the hidden places in private people, cause shy people to bloom where others just take a standard shot. Laurie McConnell webmaster bigpacific

  • Duane is selfless with his time. I see him everywhere - every time I attend a public event, no matter how small, there's Duane with his camera and big smile. Not only does he take pictures of everything, he SHARES all the pictures he takes, mostly without compensation. He is synonymous with the word generosity. Laurie McConnell

  • Duane is everywhere taking his pictures - not for just his business but for charities and non-profits. He shares his photos with the non-profits for their brochures, websites and other general use with little or no thanks. Sechelt is a better place for Duane's photo journalism for all the groups who do not have expert facilities or resources of their own. He should be recognized for this community service to so many groups that is beyond the normal or expected.Robert d'arcy

  • Duane is the most caring, sharing, conscientious community minded individual that I have ever met. his contribution comes genuinely from his heart and not for profit. Duane's photos capture the passion and the spirit of the Sunshine Coast. • Duane seems to take a special interest in some of the lesser known events that may not be "newsworthy" but are very dear to many of our hearts. While photos are not always used, often they are offered to those shot to remember that "special" time and place. Also, his sense of humor allows him to shoot things others may not. Duane is a well known and loved addition to the characters on the Coast! Anonymous

  • I recently worked on the Roberts Creek History Project and we were so thankful to the photographers who remembered to record the "now" of their times. Duane has created an extensive photo library of the Sunshine Coast, a collection that reflects the socio-economic makeup of this wonderful community we live in. The photos give us and our visitors a positive image, an impressive legacy, of our diverse and dedicated community spirit. Jan Brinton

  • From one end of the coast to the other, Duane Burnett arrives with his camera, recording the living history of the Sunshine Coast - the people, the clubs, teams, groups, fundraisers, schools, nature closeup, nature landscapes, building and construction, news events and news makers. • Duane should be recognized for not only his photo montage contributions but also for the spirit and flair with which he provides his selfless service. If we are to encourage and grow this attitude, in this special place, we must celebrate his type of great community building, his enthusiasm and his unbounded energy and good will. Please consider him for recognition. He truly deserves it!Barry Janyk

  • COMMUNITY SPIRIT nomination: Duane has spent inordinate amounts of his own personal time working to provide brilliant images of the life of the Sunshine Coast - candidly and openly - always professionally. This kind of tireless effort is the epitome of what makes this community such a great place to be and the magnificent place it is to live. Barry Janyk

  • COMMUNITY SPIRIT nomination: Duane Burnett has been drifting around the coast for years, making people smile and showcasing their kids, pets and businesses. He records events that no one else does, therefore holding an important stream of history for locals to draw on. He records our lives, our joys and our surroundings and he does it with his own loving style. He is like the "grandmother", holding our stories in a safe place until we need them or will appreciate them. Anonymous

  • COMMUNITY SPIRIT nomination: He gives much of his photography away for free. (In fact I do wonder sometimes if he struggles to make a living- but he has ethics and simply will not charge for some things - especially for a non-profit group or fundraiser) Anonymous

  • I am a business owner here and I have seen him in action. He is loved by everyone, and besides his capturing moments from behind the camera, he adds to any event just by his presence: he has a vivacious style and such a caring and personable nature. He relates to people from all walks of life. I don't believe Duane receives a great deal of recompense for his work, but I never ever hear that from him. Anonymous

  • COMMUNITY SPIRIT nomination: Duane Burnett's love of this community shows through each time you view one of his photographs.
