you ARE RIGHT about the double roll/punk beat thing. but you CAN use traditional grip in using a drum set, some of the best drumers use this technique in drumming, so technically he IS holding them right for HIS comfort.

Buddy Rich did this in his Left hand. nothing wrong with it. Its not posing, its just a preffered way of doing it. I do it too sometimes depending on what i'm playing. Any 1/16+ that i have to do with one hand, I find that grip easier. But my music ie. Trivium use mainly 1/4 notes on the hi-hat and cymbals so i don't normally use it.
