Mark is so humble about his fingers-only style, slagging his playing as not loud or fast-enough. Reminds me of another fingers (thumb) only guy, Wes Montgomery, who also lamented playing sans pick. Both men have styles very tough to imitate, if not all but impossible. Catch that bit of fingerstyle "Freight Train"? Mark is the real deal and then some... I do wish he'd tour more here in the States.
A god? nah, maybe an angel though. Such beautiful playing to watch and hear, thanks for putting it here. and thanks to Mark Knopfler for letting it stay!

i like at 4:50 when he says ''you know'' and keeps playing like a god and says ''and then you go like'' and keeps that awesome picking like it were easy... what a pro!!
Fucking hell i loath the vast majority of rock fans - they all seem to be stuck up snobs who all think they know everything there is to know about guitar/the music industry.
It;s all about competition - "this guy is better than this guy" bla bla bla
not only is it not about who is better but you guys just can't tell - you'd have to analyse them so carefully to find out who is best - far more than you can get from some CD's
Music taste is based on opinions, noone is right, noone is wrong
Dude, i gotta start practice this technique! Saw it for the first time while watching Tommy Emmanuel and that completely blew my head of, but it's quite difficult to play different rhytms with the thumb and the fingers.
There is a video somewhere called "mark knopfler acoustic improvisation". He plays quite the same thing but maybe 20 years before ! Go have a look at it, it's amazing !
Why hasnt he made just an acoustic album? I def dont think he has? That could be very interesting, listening some of these licks. I mean he does play acoustic occasionally, but to make kind of a bluesy acoustic album without any electric...
@rohitmango i know there is one riff in there from an acoustic song called freight train by elizabeth cotton that is well worth checking out...she wrote it when she was 11 or 12 years old...
MegaDude please tell me who is looking for the best, when all players have his own color, his own beat?? Oh please dont come with this myopitic vision of music and musicians. When you say: Oh who is the best of the world guitar player ? Oh please I wanna know ??? Think that it's not so important. The important thing is that all is good guitar players wich one with his own peculiarity.
@luizarenare Dude, I think you misunderstood me. When is someone the best? everyone has a favorite player that they think is the best. But when can you call a player the best? Because they play fast, or because they play fingerstyle?
@MegaDutchdude Hi dude One thing that you dont understand is that you nerver can compare one player with another player. For ex: Mark Kn with Steve Vai, or Joe Satriani cause all players have his own style and we have to listen one by one and look up to how they are amazing. When I'm listening Hendrix, I'm not comparing his style with other players and only looking for THE BEST. It is very stupid for me.

mark is probably one of the greatest guitar players of all time, okay, not probably, he is. he's musical genius, and a great guy....but i noticed one sort of funny thing in this video :S

Nearly shat myself when I seen this video, MK was probably 80% responsible for my learning of the guitar, I didn't touch a pick/plectrum until about 2 years into learning cos of him, no regrets, cheers MK!!
@qjamesfloyd Tell me about it! I larned more in the 5 or 6 minutes of this video, than in the 20 years of self-taught fingerstyle playing that I TRY to play! Geez, I like his style!
David Gilmour, Mark Knopfler, Ritchie Blackmore, Brian May. These go first. Then there is a VERY long gap. Then there go everybody else. AT ONCE. So, from the bottom of my Russian heart - Thank you, UK!!!
@sugarkang and @ lethalhippo thank you....i discovered blind blake and bllind willie mctell after this video...i thought maybe he was telling the name of another guitarist...
OMG I love that he starts picking these amazing licks and says "you know" in between them. ha ha ha....you know...because it's so easy, right? ha ha ha
That's true!. And you can be very good at guitarplaying, but if you can't play with emotions it's still bad music. I mean easy guitar playing can be very beatiful to, but Mark's music is great althougd that indeed is all about personal taste.
I don't like those reactions at video's with Knopfler and Clapton who argue wich one is the best. Just love the music! And if you don't, don't listen to it.
@MegaDutchdude YES! HE`S THE ONLY ONE, WHO SHOW US ALL THE GUITAR TECHNICS. HE IS FOR SURE, A WORLD`S PEOPLE ARTIST, AND VERY DIFFERENT FROM ALL THE OTHERS. ONE OF THE 8 BEST PLAYERS EVER, AND THE ONLY ONE, WITH COURAGE AND FEELING, TO SHARE WITH US...
Yeah its true and anyway all the guitarist you mentioned are shit!!! hahaha appart from vai but still all these breddas play guitar within narrow constraints, they might be quick but theres more to guitar than speed! haha HAAAAAAAAAAAAA
But there has to be some REASON in the opinion. If somebody says Kurt Cobain is the best guitar player EVER. then they are entitled to that opinion....but their opinion is wrong.
Cobain isn't even close to being the best.
It's all objective but there has to be some sense involved.
Sorry, but what does your comment even mean?! 'Reason in the opinion'? 'Some sense involved'?
Please enlighten us. To me (and many I'm sure) anyone who engages in the 'this musician is better than that musician' debate clearly misses the point of music. You can be more technically proficient than another musician, but you cannot be 'better' than another musician. It's just not possible.
i understand well enough thanks. i think he is the best guitarist in the world. if there were an objective way to test this i wouldn't need to say i think he is. i think others are excellent but for me he is the best.
@MegaDutchdude I 100% agree with where you are coming from. My favorite is MK, but SRV is tough to beat.. MK does have a style and sound that is all his own and that is what make him great. I thank God that he will be around nearly as long as me. I do enjoy his music and his mind.
@MegaDutchdude I think Knofpler is close to the Greatest qiute simply cos he makes it look easy and sometimes dosnt even look when doing his most well known Solos plus he does such complex riffs and little Qiurks in the songs which are incredibly difficult, maybe not the greatest to you but to me He is my Inspiration and a Guitar god :D
@MegaDutchdude Tastes or not, Jimi is the best without a shadow of doubt. You can define "best" in a variety of ways, and all of them would be true for Jimi. There is always a number one. Having said that, I like Knopfler too. I love Clapton, Duane, SRV, BB King, Gilmour and a few others. Jimi is the greatest. Hooah suckers...
He is the best and everything you wrote doesn't make any sense. I assume your favorite guitarist is some shredding wannabe player. If you say there are tons of reasons why Jimi Hendrix is not the best player ever, then you are basically calling yourself a fucking moron when it comes to music. I don't know of anyone who would say such a thing. You see - there is your favorite player and there is the best player ever. Accept that and move on. Oh and most influential? Are you honestly fucking me?
Hendrix is NOT the greatest! Definitely the most influential, but greatest?
He's not a master of jazz, he's not the most technical, he's not the fastest, hell he may not even be the best blues/rock guy. While I give u NO list of greatest guitarists is complete without his name, he just isn't the most skilled as a player. He is amazing no doubt, but he was often sloppy & a lot of his solo's come from an E. A. B/D backbone...Every player u named is a blues guy, so your clearly biased..
@acason4 Jimi was/is the greatest and will most probably remain the undisputed ultimate master of the electric guitar. You obviously have no idea what you are talking about. It's not about who is technical, fast or where one's solos come from (wtf?). It's about the feel. First of all, if you wanna see technique and speed, check out Voodoo Child (Slight Return). Here is the only song I've ever encountered that I can listen to every single day at any time for years now.
Please kis FIND REALITY!!Any unbiased player will admit that Hendrix was amazing but not the greatest!First, there's no such thing as greatest, but the FACT still remains, there r better lead players, more technical players, more precise players, better rhythm players, better jazz players,so on & so forth. I know Jimi's catalog, I don't need a lesson kid...Hendrix is like JimBrown, great in his era & among the greatest ever, but there r guys who have taken it to another level..PERIOD!
@acason4 That song is the pinnacle of electric guitar expression. A true master-piece that Joe Satriani (who I'm not a particular fan of) described as a beacon of humanity. This song is something that even the great SRV didn't quite manage to tame and cover. (although his cover is the ONLY worthy variation of the song to be classified as non-blashpemy; as opposed to, say, Slash and Zakk Wylde or Yngwie Malmsteen covers which are a travesty of music and art in general).
@acason4 Next, we have the absolutely revolutionary Purple Haze which is not ranked #17 on the top 500 songs of all time list without reason. To mention everything Jimi 'invented' would be a time-consuming feat indeed so I will leave it at that. Here, we have a man who could play anything. On the Electric Ladyland, you can clearly see this for your ignorant self. Yes, you've got jazz, blues, hard rock, psychedelic rock and ountless other genres intertwining.
@acason4 You've also got Axis: Bold As Love, which contains the greatest pieces of rhythm guitar ever recorded by anyone. Jimi could compose something as melodic and sentimental as Little Wing, a social commentary in the style of Marvin Gaye such as House Burning Down, the ultimate mythical gris-gris blues mastery of Voodoo Chile, heavy psychedelic oriented master-piece such as Foxy Lady etc. He was as versatile as anyone ever.
It's funny to see the uninformed stating opinion as if it's fact.."Bold As Love, the greatest piece of rhythm ever recorded by anyone"...do u realize how uncredible u make yourself when u make these type of statements...pure opinion!!!You can't argue "opinion or like" but u can argue FACTS!!! FACTS: There r faster, more technical, more precise, more advanced players than Hendrix...Guitar playing has come MILES since the 60's!! Open Your Eyes!
@acason4 Are you fucked up in your head?? First of all, don't call me kid, you should get slapped for your insolence. Secondly, there was never a player that incorporated all that Jimi was. He was more versatile than anyone. AND WHEN WILL ALL YOU FUCKERS UNDERSTAND THAT BEING THE FASTEST OR THE MOST TECHNICAL OR MOST PRECISE DOESN'T MEAN YOU'RE ANYWHERE CLOSE TO BEING GREAT??? Are you a fucking retard with mentioning this all the time?? Better jazz player? Talking about biased here...
@acason4 He played stuff that made Eric Clapton (who I admire) shiver and tremble, such as Killing Floor. As technical and fast as it gets. Check out Machine Gun - a song in which he extracts sounds that many never thought were possible to obtain using an electric guitar. He pushed the boundaries of guitar expression. All that in just three studio albums with The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and but a few shows with The Band of Gypsys. Let's not forget the legendary live performances like Woodstock.
@acason4 In the end, although I wrote this in a hurry, I think you get the picture. And yes, I'm also very biased towards blues players. Why? Probably because blues is where it all began. Blues guys were the ones copied and 'upgraded' on. And they are the ones with the biggest soul and feeling. For you can be the most technical and knowledgeable of all, and that doesn't mean you can play the blues. Is BB King technical? Fast? His solos are based on one or two boxes of the minor/major pentatonic.
Blues is where it began & like anything that becomes greater than its beginnings it has to adapt & get BETTER or more ADVANCED!! Guitar playing is no different.....u have NO versatility...u like blues & blues as great as it is, it mostly consists of major/minor penatonic scales & if that alone does it for u then great, but more advanced players have taken things to new levels. Blues will always be great & a founding father, but the technical guys,jazz guys have taken things FURTHER!,
@acason4 What the hell are you talking about?? Jazz and blues are the beginnings, jazz guys haven't taken anything further, jazz is as old as anything in modern music. And you fail again by thinking I have no versatility, I've listened to a lot of stuff although it seems like wasted time all those comments I wrote, as you are ignorant and stubborn as hell. The problem with you people is that all you need is knowing that something utilises complex scales, arpeggios, modes etc. and you're happy.
@Solus77 I have yet to see YOU state a few facts instead of nonsense such as he wasn't the fastest, the most precise, the best jazz player etc. (wtf?!) The thing is, you think music is about skill with the instrument and complexity. You are way off and I feel sorry for you for that. I'll take an Albert King solo over anything you can offer any time. And did I mention I love jazz?? So stop blabbering on about it... Jimi was the greatest guitar player ever. But we need to define what that means.
@Solus77 We need to see what makes a great player great. Sure, you can go by speed and he would lose. (he was fast enough to play anything tho, he just didn't use speed that much 'cos guess what - maybe there's a better way to express yourself than playing 100 notes in 3 seconds) If we were judging players by your criteria, there would be no difference between any of the guys who play guitar professionally. They are all up there somewhere in terms of speed, accuracy and all the technical aspects
@Solus77 Yes, some are better then others in a way but also lacking in some other way. You are off the point and out of your league here so don't bother arguing any more. I have wasted enough time trying to prove something to a guy like you, you first need to get things straight with yourself. In the end, I would like to emphasize that I do not underestimate any genre of music. It just saddens me that music didn't really improve and progress since the 60's/70's/80's and so on.
@Solus77 It just got more and more technical (arguably tho) and less soulful and melodic. "Guitar playing has come MILES since the 60's!! Open Your Eyes!" - I would be very happy if it did, but unfortunately that isn't the case. AGAIN, there are exceptions, but most of it is lesser than before. Thing is, as we have shown improvement overall as a species in intellectual facets, we have faded in emotional and spiritual values. Technology is on the rise, and art is not what it used to be. Sad...
@Solus77 I don't want to write a discourse now about that, for it's a complex subject. All I want to add in the end is that jazz is the most intellectual style and very beatiful indeed. And AGAIN I consider the all jazz masters (irrelevant if they played the guitar or whatever else) to be way ahead of today's wannabes. If not in terms of sheer technicality, then in something far more important for what we are talking about - and that's music, don't forget that. And Jimi had it ALL.
@acason4 Oh and one more thing. You bring me a person that doesn't think Jimi Hendrix was the greatest guitar player ever and I will bring you one that does. We'll see who runs out of people first. =)
@3439ra You FUCKING noob. You were nowhere near some of the lesser guitarists then. You can't even jokingly compare your pathetic self to the masters. What an ignorant, arrogant noob. You are a troll and I'm blocking you. LOL!!! hahaha
@toby099 Damn thats one hell of a dumb azz comment,Mark is a master on the guitar his creation is influenced by many,and if he doesnt deserve to play guitar,than we would never had the great music he left behind,but what the fuck i am dealing with somebody who never seemed to play like Mark probably,keep on practising maybe you lose your bitching character.
You were better then Hendrix when you were 16? I'm almost 100 percent sure you will never be as good as Hendrix in your entire lifetime. No one on this site will because he was a genius and master of the instrument. You sir are one stupid bastard.
@toby099 master my ass. so faar from it. you can play guitar as guitar after 30 years maybe. see chet atkins about guitar. something you dont know shit about. jimi is overrated as hell. he could only jam after a tune. like mark says. its never to late to bogey. jimi wasnt old enough too acomp anything with it. it doesent take much to impress a frustated fool. now, mark or not to mention mr guitar chet atkins is what guitar is all about. FAAAR from jimi hendrix. thats your planet

David Gilmour, Mark Knopfler, Ritchie Blackmore, Brian May. These go first. Then there is a VERY long gap. Then there go everybody else. AT ONCE. So, from the bottom of my Russian heart - Thank you, UK!!!

people, please understand: there IS NO best guitarist in the world!
It's all about personal taste.
I really like Knopfler, but noway is he the nr1 guitarplayer.
Just like Satch,Gilmour, Vai, SRV etc etc aren't.
Why? because there is no objective way of measuring ones guitarplaying qualities!
as said; it's about taste.
let's just be glad we all have different tastes and respect another ones taste without the bitchin!
MegaDutchdude 1 year ago 119
That's true!. And you can be very good at guitarplaying, but if you can't play with emotions it's still bad music. I mean easy guitar playing can be very beatiful to, but Mark's music is great althougd that indeed is all about personal taste.
I don't like those reactions at video's with Knopfler and Clapton who argue wich one is the best. Just love the music! And if you don't, don't listen to it.

@MegaDutchdude Man I wanted to say that before, you really can't know how good a guitarist plays...
It could be even one of the 'unfamous' guitarists, you just can't know....

Yeah its true and anyway all the guitarist you mentioned are shit!!! hahaha appart from vai but still all these breddas play guitar within narrow constraints, they might be quick but theres more to guitar than speed! haha HAAAAAAAAAAAAA
anonymousrelease 1 year ago
@MegaDutchdude True. It's all opinionated.
But there has to be some REASON in the opinion. If somebody says Kurt Cobain is the best guitar player EVER. then they are entitled to that opinion....but their opinion is wrong.
Cobain isn't even close to being the best.
It's all objective but there has to be some sense involved.
TheHockeyCentral 1 year ago
@TheHockeyCentral

@MegaDutchdude I 100% agree with where you are coming from. My favorite is MK, but SRV is tough to beat.. MK does have a style and sound that is all his own and that is what make him great. I thank God that he will be around nearly as long as me. I do enjoy his music and his mind.

@MegaDutchdude I think Knofpler is close to the Greatest qiute simply cos he makes it look easy and sometimes dosnt even look when doing his most well known Solos plus he does such complex riffs and little Qiurks in the songs which are incredibly difficult, maybe not the greatest to you but to me He is my Inspiration and a Guitar god :D
darthrevan10 1 year ago
@darthrevan10
just as i said before, it's a matter of taste. To you his riffs may sound difficult or cool, to another guitarist they may mean nothing.
There's loads of guitarriffs way more difficult, faster or even more melodical.

The best we can do is measure their actually music knowledge, like scales and relative minors and really difficult stuff.
MadnessOfMarmots 1 year ago
@MadnessOfMarmots
what is 'really difficult stuff"?
licks that maybe difficult to mr knopfler may be easy to mr Vai..
Does that make Vai a better player?
don't think so...
MegaDutchdude 1 year ago
@MegaDutchdude
I mean like actually musical knowledge, not playing skills. It's the most objective way to judge.
MadnessOfMarmots 1 year ago
@MegaDutchdude Tastes or not, Jimi is the best without a shadow of doubt. You can define "best" in a variety of ways, and all of them would be true for Jimi. There is always a number one. Having said that, I like Knopfler too. I love Clapton, Duane, SRV, BB King, Gilmour and a few others. Jimi is the greatest. Hooah suckers...
Solus77 1 year ago
@Solus77 why is he the best?
tons of reasons why not... First of all: what is "best".
most influencial? fastest? Most technical? Most copied? Most bluesy/jazzy/rock?
The answer to at least 3 of those questions is: not Jimi.
So how can you say he's the best?
You can't, just that he's the best to you.
MegaDutchdude 1 year ago
He is the best and everything you wrote doesn't make any sense. I assume your favorite guitarist is some shredding wannabe player. If you say there are tons of reasons why Jimi Hendrix is not the best player ever, then you are basically calling yourself a fucking moron when it comes to music. I don't know of anyone who would say such a thing. You see - there is your favorite player and there is the best player ever. Accept that and move on. Oh and most influential? Hendrix is NOT the greatest! Definitely the most influential, but greatest?
He's not a master of jazz, he's not the most technical, he's not the fastest, hell he may not even be the best blues/rock guy. While I give u NO list of greatest guitarists is complete without his name, he just isn't the most skilled as a player. He is amazing no doubt, but he was often sloppy & a lot of his solo's come from an E. A. B/D backbone...Every player u named is a blues guy, so your clearly biased..
acason4 1 year ago
@acason4 Jimi was/is the greatest and will most probably remain the undisputed ultimate master of the electric guitar. You obviously have no idea what you are talking about. It's not about who is technical, fast or where one's solos come from (wtf?). It's about the feel. First of all, if you wanna see technique and speed, check out Voodoo Child (Slight Return). Here is the only song I've ever encountered that I can listen to every single day at any time for years now.
Solus77 1 year ago
@Solus77
I know Jimi's catalog, I don't need a lesson kid...Hendrix is like JimBrown, great in his era & among the greatest ever, but there r guys who have taken it to another level..PERIOD!
acason4 1 year ago
@acason4 That song is the pinnacle of electric guitar expression. A true master-piece that Joe Satriani (who I'm not a particular fan of) described as a beacon of humanity. This song is something that even the great SRV didn't quite manage to tame and cover. (although his cover is the ONLY worthy variation of the song to be classified as non-blashpemy; as opposed to, say, Slash and Zakk Wylde or Yngwie Malmsteen covers which are a travesty of music and art in general).
Solus77 1 year ago
@acason4 Next, we have the absolutely revolutionary Purple Haze which is not ranked #17 on the top 500 songs of all time list without reason. To mention everything Jimi 'invented' would be a time-consuming feat indeed so I will leave it at that. Here, we have a man who could play anything. On the Electric Ladyland, you can clearly see this for your ignorant self. Yes, you've got jazz, blues, hard rock, psychedelic rock and ountless other genres intertwining.
Solus77 1 year ago
@acason4 You've also got Axis: Bold As Love, which contains the greatest pieces of rhythm guitar ever recorded by anyone. Jimi could compose something as melodic and sentimental as Little Wing, a social commentary in the style of Marvin Gaye such as House Burning Down, the ultimate mythical gris-gris blues mastery of Voodoo Chile, heavy psychedelic oriented master-piece such as Foxy Lady etc. He was as versatile as anyone ever.
Solus77 1 year ago
@Solus77
You sure are full of opinions....ha ha
It's funny to see the uninformed stating opinion as if it's fact.."Bold As Love, the greatest piece of rhythm ever recorded by anyone"...do u realize how uncredible u make yourself when u make these type of statements...pure opinion!!!You can't argue "opinion or like" but u can argue FACTS!!! FACTS: There r faster, more technical, more precise, more advanced players than Hendrix...Guitar playing has come MILES since the 60's!! Open Your Eyes!
acason4 1 year ago
Solus77 1 year ago
@acason4 He played stuff that made Eric Clapton (who I admire) shiver and tremble, such as Killing Floor. As technical and fast as it gets. Check out Machine Gun - a song in which he extracts sounds that many never thought were possible to obtain using an electric guitar. He pushed the boundaries of guitar expression. All that in just three studio albums with The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and but a few shows with The Band of Gypsys. Let's not forget the legendary live performances like Woodstock.
Solus77 1 year ago
@acason4 In the end, although I wrote this in a hurry, I think you get the picture. And yes, I'm also very biased towards blues players. Why? Probably because blues is where it all began. Blues guys were the ones copied and 'upgraded' on. And they are the ones with the biggest soul and feeling. For you can be the most technical and knowledgeable of all, and that doesn't mean you can play the blues. Is BB King technical? Fast? His solos are based on one or two boxes of the minor/major pentatonic.
Solus77 1 year ago
@Solus77
Blues will always be great & a founding father, but the technical guys,jazz guys have taken things FURTHER!,
acason4 1 year ago
@acason4 What the hell are you talking about?? Jazz and blues are the beginnings, jazz guys haven't taken anything further, jazz is as old as anything in modern music. And you fail again by thinking I have no versatility, I've listened to a lot of stuff although it seems like wasted time all those comments I wrote, as you are ignorant and stubborn as hell. The problem with you people is that all you need is knowing that something utilises complex scales, arpeggios, modes etc. and you're happy.
Solus77 1 year ago
@Solus77 I have yet to see YOU state a few facts instead of nonsense such as he wasn't the fastest, the most precise, the best jazz player etc. (wtf?!) The thing is, you think music is about skill with the instrument and complexity. You are way off and I feel sorry for you for that. I'll take an Albert King solo over anything you can offer any time. And did I mention I love jazz?? So stop blabbering on about it... Jimi was the greatest guitar player ever. But we need to define what that means.
Solus77 1 year ago
@Solus77 We need to see what makes a great player great. Sure, you can go by speed and he would lose. (he was fast enough to play anything tho, he just didn't use speed that much 'cos guess what - maybe there's a better way to express yourself than playing 100 notes in 3 seconds) If we were judging players by your criteria, there would be no difference between any of the guys who play guitar professionally. They are all up there somewhere in terms of speed, accuracy and all the technical aspects
Solus77 1 year ago
@Solus77 Yes, some are better then others in a way but also lacking in some other way. You are off the point and out of your league here so don't bother arguing any more. I have wasted enough time trying to prove something to a guy like you, you first need to get things straight with yourself. In the end, I would like to emphasize that I do not underestimate any genre of music. It just saddens me that music didn't really improve and progress since the 60's/70's/80's and so on.
Solus77 1 year ago
@Solus77 It just got more and more technical (arguably tho) and less soulful and melodic. "Guitar playing has come MILES since the 60's!! Open Your Eyes!" - I would be very happy if it did, but unfortunately that isn't the case. AGAIN, there are exceptions, but most of it is lesser than before. Thing is, as we have shown improvement overall as a species in intellectual facets, we have faded in emotional and spiritual values. Technology is on the rise, and art is not what it used to be. Sad...
Solus77 1 year ago
@Solus77 I don't want to write a discourse now about that, for it's a complex subject. All I want to add in the end is that jazz is the most intellectual style and very beatiful indeed. And AGAIN I consider the all jazz masters (irrelevant if they played the guitar or whatever else) to be way ahead of today's wannabes. If not in terms of sheer technicality, then in something far more important for what we are talking about - and that's music, don't forget that. And Jimi had it ALL.
