  • "I went to the place where every white face is an

    invitation to robbery"

Not many people can get away with lines like that. That's what I like about Strummer, he told the truth, where ever he saw it. And no body can say he was a racist, with his track record.

  • wasn't i lucky n wouldn't be lav-aly!!!

  • Oh European Home, Great European Home. : )

  • Fuckin' awesome song!

  • Gay. Thx

  • best of the clash gettin close to dylan

  • Hello folks, happy new year! It's wonderful how last winter I was in a Clash mood and now here I am again. I like keepinmy own tradition, on every December 22 (RIP Joe Strummer) I start listening them a lot, more than usually. Great memories from last year, I hope we'll be all back here in 2013!

    Know your rights!

  • @villadavid4ever well i started this year with this amazing song :D

    happy new year!

  • La mia preferita!

  • "I'd stay and be a tourist but I can't take the gunplay!!!"

Love the buildup to that line.

  • RIP Joe.

  • One of the great Clash tracks of all time. Brutal.

  • @dagwoodful lucky you!! I would give anything to have even SEEN the clash, but to play the same show as them?? FORGET IT!

  • WISH I WASH 15 AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • So cooool!

I saw the Clash 17 times, maybe i saw you too?

  • i had the pleasure to support the Clash as a young man in a band i played in.....some 30 years ago they were my idols and true gents! this remains my fav along with white man in hammersmith..believe me they where king rockers...

  • @dagwoodful WHAT WAS THE NAME OF YOUR BAND -TELL US MORE

  • @dagwoodful no way! as in you met them?! thats pretty cool

  • One of the all time great opening songs to an album.also one of the best covers , particularly if u have it on vinyl! Love Joes voice!!!

  • SAFFFFFE EUURRROPEAN HOME! :):):):)

  • Just had to listen to somebody called mat cardigan in an advert before this came on. Strummer will be spinning in his grave.

  • I went to the place where every white face is an invitation to robbery

  • Rudie come from Jamaica, Rudie can't fail

  • music that makes you wanna...drop and flop

  • They went to Jamaica and some punks ripped them off and robbed them......simple as that.

  • This song is about when the visited Jamaica expecting a great time. Instead they got a very hard time with people demanding money off them all the time.

"....sitting here in my safe European home,

don't want to go back there again..."

  • These guys are part of the frontier for punk. Great song writing and great sound from the past.

  • Why is no one able to play like this anymore?

  • @broadband0118 not enough money in it.

  • @dreekd80 Surely to fuck there must be a market for young kids who can really write and play instruments.

  • i cried

  • The Only Band That Matters. Enough said.

  • @shelleyinthecity Ditto simply a moral compass for life.

  • rudy, rudy, rudy, rudy, rudy he can't fail

if you only hear one Clash song, ^this is the one you should

i had programmed my turntable (yes, kids, vinyl) to drop the needle on first cut, first side as my alarm clock

    that'll wake you up

  • This and Tommy Gun have the most explosive openings....and Mick Jones' backing vocals are amazing.

  • @Redvaliant I agree. Clash songs trasmit a message of desperate urgency! The guitars are all about emotion and whats real right now!

  • This should have been a bigger song/lp than it was at the time The Clash get it right here!

  • @DCLsMusic We're bastards for letting Africa turn to shit? Utter bollocks! Exploitation by Africa's own corrupt, murderous politicians and militias has just a tad to do with it. But if it feeds your masochistic White Liberal Guilt to blame every and all White person in the West for the dispicable acts of some Companys/ Governments and a bunch of greedy Natives...fill yer boots!

  • @Loobs666 I can't help but to feel responsible in a way. I guess that trip to Africa made me very angry, how is it possible(for example)all of those hockey riots in Canada(people takin the street cause of some game) and we, us people don't have the decency to really stand up for what our governments&financial forces r doin with this planet? How is it possible that half of the world is dying from obesity and the other half from malnutrition? Sorry If I offended you anyway..

  • @DCLsMusic theres still i lot of us in canada who agree with you ,and a lot that still give a damn...cheers from nova scotia, canada

  • tuley74 has got it right. I read a book all about the Clash called Passion is a Fashion and talks about nearly everything they did and yeah Mick and Joe went to Jamaica. Them being white, they were treated with racism by the locals and that. The people there tried ripping them off, and wanted their money. Hence the lyrics; Where every white face is an invitation to robbery. It was dangerous for them being there cause they were white and all that and not from there.

  • @Boogieboy138 True all true man but they had the intellect to see why it was like that...Like when Joe and Paul got caught up in Nottinghill Carnival riot the Rastas tryed to mug them as they were white and m all the boys had was bricks and bottles to throw at Feds...Divide and Conquer caused by social engineering doesnt make it right.

  • @DelStrainComedy not true. the Rasta General that saw em getting mugged stopped the youngsters that were doing the mugging; all they had in their pockets was bricks anyway! Rasta First!!!

  • @BobbyPyn372 They were with Mikey Dread in Jamaica and they had to leave as story goes..When they were mugged and had nothing but bricks and bottles in pockets it was "actually" Joe and Paul at Nottinghill Carnival comes from Joes lips on Documentary..When they went Jamaica Paul was gutted he neevr got their, probably politics in dynamic of 3 mates , and petty shit..Its all well documented man.

  • @Boogieboy138 I remember in West Way To The World i think it was, Joe had to escape from a recording studio. I think it was because a whole bunch of Jamaicans were coming with machetes and weapons because they thought he was a government spy or something. Been awhile since I say it, so I may be wrong. I do remember him having to escape though.

  • @bioshockt Close enough the with the jamaica thing, but the reason they had to flee was because he rolling stones had been at the studio a wee while before and been handing out money to everyone to keep the locals happy. So they expected the same from the Clash.. But they didnt have loads of money...

  • Happy New Year!

I started this year with this amazing song :D

  • @villadavid4ever gettin ready to start another one, clash r eternal. rip joe.

  • @villadavid4ever finishing 31 december with this amazing song

  • Great example of how the Clash smashed punk and pop together to get a one of a kind music.

  • lovely it would

  • Seriously, this is much better than London Calling. That song is overrated, and I think it´s the worst song in the whole album.

White Riot is the best Clash song ever.

  • video? Are you a monkey?

Grew up on the Clash. Remember staring in the mirror at "Straight to Hell" at 16 and before that, wondering what the "Julie" meant when I was 14! Pressure drop what just what I needed at 15. Man, I painted my parent's house twice to London Calling. So if you are younger than 30, try to be mindful that you did not live through any of this music. but listen always.

  • @mongo88now88 Story of my life bro. Im in the era of teeny boppers who can't get enough fix on talentless auto-tunes and disney sex-icons. If only I loved in the time of the bollocks and london calling. If only

  • great song, not much of a video

  • This song is so fuckin awesome!!

  • fuck i love the clash awesome ass band

  • thank god joe isn't alive to see the crap people are posting below his songs......

  • @PankRottana

I think the correct lyric is "I want to go back there again"

  • @sirsquintalot No, it´s "Don´t wanna go back there again".

This song is about how much they disliked the USA.

  • @villadavid4ever thats incorrect actually. joe wrote this song in '78 when him and mick went to jamaica to work on an album for a week or so

  • @tuley75 Oh, didn´t know that. Anyway, the lyrics are "don´t wanna go back there again" for sure.

  • mrlordmilton i think you might find that Paul Siminon and Mick Jones are playin with the Gorillas right about now

  • tanks!

  • The Clash, rhymes with Trash , which is why not one of them is about today.

mrlordmilton rhymes with paris hilton, so do you do cocaine like her, or prance around in your dad's money?

  • @krmln321 Sounds a bit like bastard son of milkman too!

  • @mrlordmilton Congratulations! You're the biggest cunt I've come across all week!

  • @mrlordmilton Fat wife? I ain't married you dumb cunt! I got a beautiful girlfriend who you have never seen! You've managed it again,CUNT of the week! You've put "shy" instead of "is" & a "?" instead of an "!" at the end of your so hurtful words! Don't worry, one day your work may improve!?!

  • @mrlordmilton And what have you contributed to society, you brilliant rhymer, you?

  • @mrlordmilton They'd laugh in your face if they were around today, as would the rest of us. The stench of pathetic, lonely Internet troll is rife around you. :)

  • i LOVE the CLASH and wish i could see them.COME ON TIME TRAVEL

  • @dionreedssamurai. Get a clue.

  • looks like really speed breakin' tunes rules again dear joe my man.

    also chilean mine release joe.

right up your street ol' yin.

    jesus i wept.

    staght man rock in bulawayo.

    bell boy.

  • so what's the story behind this great song? is it supposed to be ironic/sarcastic, like is he poking fun at certain white people with their xenophobic often irrational fears of darker skinned peoples? or is joe strummer seriously singing about an unpleasant experince he had in Jamaica and that he sincerely saying he wouldn't want to go back?

  • every white face is an invitation to robbery.

  • @dionreedsamurai really? i must be prime suspect #1 then mate,in your own time...

  • Give em enough rope is My Favorite Clash album.

  • great album

  • For me the best Clash Album ever..sorry everyone, London Calling comes second for me...Clash F.O.R.E.V.E.R !

  • great fucking song by a great fucking band!!!

  • I hope they enjoyed their cheap holiday in other people's misery.

  • @tipsydave who, the Sex Pistols?

  • Greatest Clash song followed by Complete Control.....

  • I always smile at Topper's drum crack at the beginning. These guys were so aggressive.

  • This album is a lot tighter and better than London Calling which is the album that marked the beginning of the end for them.

  • my fav lp by the clash

  • @PissoDeStrisso my fav LP was Sandinista :)

  • the only band that matters (the clash)

  • Now i wanna loot

  • One of the best The Clash songs

  • The Clash - A real band.

I grew up with all of this and still can't get enough. This is such a great album. Love every song on it.

  • dear lord, i need this album

  • @MsJackanape I got the original copy :D

  • i read about this band and album in a nov. 1979 issue of time magazine and it compared them to the stones and who......i was 16 and working in a nursing home for retired nuns....i bought this on 8 TRACK and never looked back.........lol

  • Arriba The Clash!

  • I went to the place where every white face is an invitation to robbery

Sitting here in my safe European home

Don't wanna go back there again

  • @MegaMenzie Thanks, had trouble w/a lot of the words.

  • Love the ending with the music fading out then back in, tough. Great vocals.

  • Love the reprise on this

  • man i wish i was alive to see them in concert. my favourite band ever!

  • Just what it is all about!! - music that can touch your soul & make a sh*tty day a great day!

The run off is just sublime - Where did all go so wrong with what passes as music today? X -Factor? My hat!

  • well i just got back and i wish i wore a condom ICHY COCK

  • @LudMilton Laughable, The Clash were on the of the most influential groups on the society and youth in the UK, and your post goes beyond comprehension when you mentioned them as a "shitty" band. Paul, Mick, Joe and Topper together formed one of the tightest punk rock groups ever, add that to their abundance of the continuously growing talent they maintained from start to finish and you have one hell of a band.

  • Please take a moment to pray for St Joe, whatever that means to you, and in your own way...THANK YOU JOE, you changed the world, and you will NEVER be forgotten.

  • Too good. There should be a law against tunes this good. Just too good.

  • @TheKingOfSkiffle there are laws against music this good, and its justin bieber, jonas brothers or anyone else in todays music industry. Or at least just the ones in it for the money, not to rock out. Im more of a rebel myself

  • Oooooooops!

When this came out, the first CLASH fans (me included) were not very impressed... "Where are our lads going?" was the question in the air.

Still, this song was great, as was the (albeit too repetitive,)Tommy Gun.

Other songs were somewhat 'soft' by Clash standards. And the q. was... "Who the F**K is Sandy Pearlman?"

  • @andreaprodan Sorry but how in God's name can you call these songs " soft " compared to the first album ? Sid said the first Clash album sounded like Peter, Paul and Mary. He was only slightly wrong and they did something about it. " Rope...! was the closest the boys ever came in the studio to how they sounded live. Yes there are a lot of guitar over-dubs which at the time must have been a bit of a shock but it sounds better for it today. The first Clash album I bought and is the equal of any.

  • @andreaprodan Well, Sandy was a great producer in his own right, and he tried to do right by the Clash. I like how the first drum hit fairly pops the album off the turntable. CBS wanted a hit. The songs were great, the playing was great, and so what if it was a bit overproduced....it's still eminently listenable.

  • this has to be the best song ever

  • Good song but it sounds like they got "inspired" by legendary Swedish punk rockers Topper! Check out "Once a punk always a punk" and you´ll see what I am talking about.

  • Shut the fuck up.

Once a Punk always a Punk, came out in 2006.

While this song came out in 1978.

    Topper= Inspired by The Clash

  • Haha, cretin! Just how much of a fool are you exactly? The Clash, arguably the greatest and most influential Punk band in history, who released this song in the late 1970s "Copied" off a band who formed in 1998.

    You utter tit!

  • @pa22em ha ha, you bellend..

  • great great great

  • spraycando, the communist bit is a put down, listen to the lyrics man!!

  • rudy, come back down.....

  • that natty gritty at the sheraton hotel, yeah!!

  • sitting here in my safe european HOOOOOME!

    Legends

  • First album I ever got.. older brother gave it to me and its still one of the albums I listen to the most

  • now thats wat you call music

  • Give em enough rope is such an insanely good album but its just sad that its sandwiched between two even better albums.

  • yeah right :)

  • I disagree...Give 'Em Enough Rope is worlds above the self-titled one.

  • that deserves a thumbs up,..couldnt of said better

  • @Samuelity1 That is so true! Sandinista suffers from the very same thing.

  • @Samuelity1 all of their music is amazing. even the mainstream singles :). to me they'll never be sell outs, even if they were famous, :P. 'the only band that matters'<3

  • @eclecticbgirl yer right. They were the only band that could get hit with the title the only band that matters and actually live up to that label. They could do no wrong.

  • @Samuelity1 could not have said it better myself!

  • @Samuelity1 overproduced try STUFFED DéLICE by THE GORGONS...not over-produced. my copy of G.E.E.ropey has been pleyed to death...

  • @Samuelity1 i really think 'rope' was their best album.....i have always thought london calling was only their third best album.....

  • @Samuelity1 it's my fave clash album...as good as london calling is , i think it's only the third best album the clash done...'rope and the debut self titled finish ahead, in my head

  • @Samuelity1 There is nothing sad about it..it's all good for us..hail the clash brother

  • I loooooooooove this song <3

  • Dunno bout the communist bit tho' All the best to the ROCKERS overseas. x

  • TUNEAGE!!

  • YEAH!!!

  • Fuck jamaica? American football is full of dumb rednecks? Pro sports fans are losers? Who the fuck are you people? this is a ckick ass Clash song and you pomytwats are going on about sports? give it a listen mates...i think your missing the point of this channel aye?

  • This is one of my favorite Clash songs. I think it's way underrated.

  • lots of musicians are sports fans...I saw Prince (minnesota native) was at the last Vikings home game

  • We got the palm trees. God hahaha bless The Clash!!!!!!!!

  • pro sports fans are sucker losers, and most successful musicians would agree. Paying hundreds of dollars or punds or whatever to watch overpaid spoiled athletes who can barely think and have zero allegiance to anyone is borderline retarded.

  • yep that's why american footballs full of dumb rednecks that only made it because they can play sports, and there parents are rich....or know people because they live in a closed off southern town

  • yeah, I'm going to retract that statement about Jamaica. I must have wanted to be in my safe european home that day. I believe it was in reaction to some things I was reading about the Caribbean and what a load of robbery it can be on many of the islands.

  • good man, i would retract the thing about the sport as well, IMHO

  • Good song, but wht the hell are they saying?

  • Comment removed

  • Sitting here in my safe European home

Dont wanna go back there again...
