It was never the best is was the best public black budget project but now the stuff we have made make that look ancient all have to say is f22 raptor and it is in the white world
I heard that the Lockheed C-5A was the first plane capable of carrying something the size of an operational nuclear reactor, but that was a long time ago.
these concepts are just fabulous. But what just keep using kerosene as fuel and why not methane, hydrogen, nuclear fission and fusion, etc which can increase fuel efficiency and also have greater range.
Hey fellas, i am going to break it to you softly here & now.....the next generation of Super Sonic & Efficient Air/SpaceCraft will not be Nuclear but more like Hydrogen & Inverse Gravitational Force propulsion!!!You can see on this link where i am leading with this: (youtube.com/watch?v=XfUhvmsGHws&feature=related)
an aircraft so advanced, they had to invent the methods of making it, along with the tools needed just to make the parts. Point to any program or manufacturer that thinks this way today. Engineers are unfortunately being cowed back into the box by attorneys and bean counters. In order to achieve something like this, you've got to be willing to take a huge chance. Nobody is left that has the nerve to be this bold.
Food for thought: This was developed in the 1950s on paper with slide rules and pencils....imagine what secret planes our government is developing now...
I'm new to the blackbird and all so don't scold me if this sounds stupid. But, what if a version of the blackbird was made that was powered by uranium? You wouldn't have the issue of refueling after take off and would stop the "weeping" of fuel on ground.
@Irishmanb4vr6 I'm not concerned about its range, but since platic that can withstand 1000 degrese F to make a perfect fuel tank hasn't been developed yet, maybe nuclear power would be enough to solve the problem of the weeping. Or is it not even that bad a problem?
@0YtsanBlowout0 I think the problem with nuclear fuel is that so far it is only used to produce steam and you couldn't carry enough water to feed it, it would just be too heavy to fly. I'm no expert either but I don't think there is any form of direct nuclear propulsion.
@0YtsanBlowout0 The government tried experimenting with that in the 50's and 60's. It failed because the necessary radiation shielding made the plane too heavy to fly. However, with modern advancements, it might be worth another look. Receintly two studies have been funded into developing a nuclear powered version of the global hawk.
Enter "The Atomic Bomber" into a youtube search as part of the "Planes that never Flew" series. It's where my information came from.
It was a real privilege to see one of these in the flesh on a recent visit to America. Makes me glad that I live in a country that is an a friend to the states
Thanks a bunch for uploading this! As a aircraft mechanic of passenger airplanes I find it amazing that they were able to build this plane so many years ago roughly during the era of man landing on the moon. Now in 2010 with all our technology we can't do something simple like board a plane without going through a body scanner or being groped by TSA. Kinda makes you wonder if we've progressed much since then.
They say even at high altitude you can't do supersonic flights over cities without annoying people, but the SR-71 seems to have done it just fine. Most of the time nobody even noticed it. Anyone able to explain this?
@bobdole57 The SR's never directly overflew soviet airspace.. They stood off the border and used their cameras took take pictures 'OVER' the border. Remember, After 1960 and the shooting down of Gary Powers, JFK promised no more "manned" overflights.. That where the M-12/M21 came into the picture..
I have tears right now in my eyes after watching this, for it is unbelievable engineering. This is one of the reasons why I study mechanical engineering, too.
The record setting flight of March 6, 1990 was a cover for the returning "Aurora" from space at the same time. The sonic boom was so strong here in Illinois on that evening, that it knocked the front door ajar on my house. One spy plane passing the baton to another.
Awesome upload (all 6 parts) I love the SR-71.. its function over form all the way.. and the end result was something so beautyfull, powerfull and amasing.
The only thing i can think of to compare it whit is the space shuttle, but thats a different beast all to gether.
It's good to know their still are places like skunkworks out their hiding secrets and black projects. Records are their to be broken and in time so will the SR-71 records. Lets just hope it will be a long time before that happens
They have one hanging down from the ceiling over in Hutchinson Kansas at the Cosmosphere. It is as wicked as it seems in the videos - to me it seemed to be alot smaller than I thought it was going to be. The first thing I said when I seen it was "I want one" ! Cool jet man - it looked totally heavy duty like it was over built.
The SR-71 Blackbird truly is the greatest airplane ever to fly, an astonishing achievement in multiple engineering disciplines.
It's sad that the second greatest airplane of all time (imo), the XB-70 Valkyrie did not achieve the same level of success and never really got out of the experimental phase.
There is one in "The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City which is docked at Pier 86 on the West Side of Manhattan". You can see it on the pictures of the ship. Just Google it. I saw it and I must say its an incredible feeling just to stand next to such master piece...
I know there is one in the Air Force base in San Antonio, TX but i dont think public can view it, but i would one day would love to travel to Arizona or something to see it =]
There's one SR at the Air Museum in Dayton, OH. Be sure to catch the bus tour over the the "experimental" hanger so you can see the B-70 Valkire stored there.
That an "inline" drag race I'd like to see, Sr-71 vs B-70 in a level run for speed.
They still ot them in mothballs,, just waiting for the time they are needed, like these fundalmentalist, there is a window only the SR 71 can fullfil, they will be flying again, they probably are now and no one knows about it.
There was a rumor that one SR was running from a missile and that the pilot had it in a serious climb. When the missile "fell off" due to lack of fuel the SR topped out at over 105,000 ft.
Mate thanks a span ! I just wonder what else is being developed in a veil of secrecy at that Skunkworks place because this Blackbird program leaves me in awe,
Since JSF is canceled, probably not one as fast as SR71 but can out turn anything, maybe where the pilot is in a prone (lying) position instead of sitting so the pilot can take more G's without blacking out.
This is a still a remarkable and controversial aircraft even today while it retires in some museum or at some guarded aircraft graveyard. This is no way for the aircraft to remain, it belongs up there in the skies.
@EmpireLS56KW no one may be able to chop up those super tempered airframes easily. so whats better is to gut its flight control systems replace them with the lates computer FCS(but must retain conventional controls) and sell $500 to $1000 ticket to fly in the back seat for 30 mins to an hour.
buyers must possess a valid passport and visa to surrounding countries in event of a redirect.
Even with the new systems it would cost a $1,000.00 just to get into the cockpits. Firing up engines and doing an actual flight would cost a heck of a lot more!!
There is a Blackbird at the Air Force Armament Museum near Eglin Air Force Base in FL that you can actually touch. It is outside and is absolutely spectacular.
The Blackbird at the Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson Arizona is quite a sight, you can touch it, just barely, on the wingtips and nose as its roped off, and you just have to think that this thing has been over Vietnam, Soviet Russia during its peak, China, outran Anti-aircraft missiles, and logged millions of flying miles over hostile terrain, and survived to see itself preserved for all time.
@81broncoman They've got one here at the Cosmosphere Air and Space Museum in Hutchinson, Kansas as well. Very beautiful birds, I wish I could have seen them in flight.
I just saw the action movie Transformers2. At a certain point they seek counsil of an ancient transformer and they find him in the aerospace museum at the smithsonian. It turns out to be a blackbird parked there. Of course they awaken him and he appears to call himself jetfire and because of his age kindoff dementing, but sooo cool... He's also complaining about rust, but as i have seen just now that seems unlikely. The blackbird also participates in the end sequence.
Like the narrator said on the Documentry, 'There is no plane like the Blackbird, There probably never will be' AMEN to that !! Not even Concorde could set those kind of speed records. The Blackbird is unique. I was lucky enough to see one at RAF Milldenhall in 1986 and , god. I will never forget that day !!
The SR-71 makes the B2 look like a friggin r/c plane. Trust me. Im a mechanical engineer, i can only ponder the immense challenges of making even the friggin chute!
B2 is better?? It doesn't even fit in with the SR-71 class of aircraft. If you really believe this, lets see the the B2 go from New York to London England in 1 Hour and 55 Minutes.
I have lived outside of Beale AFB all my life and grew up watching the Blackbird take off and land. If there is a superior aircraft in the world, I have yet to hear about it. They decommissionet the SR71 in the early 90's and it still remains the record holder for speedn altitude, etc. In fact, many of the records that it holds are still classified "Top Secret". Chaghar, do the world a favor: Shut up until you have something to say that has at least half a thought attached to it.
Better at WHAT?! Stealth, maybe and it is a bomber. Other then that there is no comparision. The SR runs at far higher speeds and flight levels then the B-2 could even dream of let alone reach!!!
ya there two different things. B2 is very good, can do some of the things the black bird can but.. it's not going to match it. Bs is a bomber. Black Bird is a super high altitude recon vehicle. It could theorhetically fly into space if you refuled it in flight, which is what they do. If you look into this thing.. the astranauts wear actual space suites. Doing more then we might imagine. 444 million a year to run them.
chaghar... you are qite simply a moron! the SR-71 is the greatest aircraft ever built. i couldnt imagine that your small minded brain could handle the technology that went into this masterpeice. you dont need to drop bombs and blow shit up to be interesting and quite breathtaking. just another cowboy pilot wannabe!! your comments are not valid nor warranted.
AMAZING !! THE FASTEST , HIGHEST FLYING, AIR BREATHING AIRCRAFT is SHIT according to a kiddy...... I wont bother detailing the planes amazing records or abilities , as I'm sure it would be lost on your type! If you aren't trolling , then you are an ignoramus ....
Your brains are shit. This aircraft was developed in the late 50's-early 60's,for that era, this was so far advanced that any other country wanting to track it or shoot it down had to FIRST invent that technology, then develop it.
chaghar wrote:it has only a high speed.
Yes,and to this day,it's high speed records still stand, unbroken.
I asked Buddy Brown what it was like to be at top speed in this thing. He said, "It was a calm hush. You can only hear your breath through the oxygen regulator. It's very peaceful." He also said, "You can't touch the glass during flight on the cockpit. It would burn your fingertips off it was so hot." NOW THAT IS ONE HELL OF A PLANE!
This aircraft is a testament to "Kelly" Johnson's genius and remarkable organizational ability. Being able to deliver his projects within his own time constraints. Both him and his planes are legends in their own right..
i like to watch all of them, im a true aviation enthusiast, i live 15 miles from beale afb, i wish i could have been old enough back then to apprectaite what the sr-71 was, but i still see u-2s alot, they are a very underestemated plane, as soon as you ever see one fly you will love it.
Did you notice that the parts aren't labeled as being out of 6? How do you expect everybody to know where the end is? I'm not even sure this is the end myself, is it?
Its amazing what they did back then...... its sorta a joke on what we do now with better computers.

At its times the SR71 was the only viable system to take scenarios before LEO and GEO satellites.
Now it is a glory of the past, as long as UAV, LEO and GEO are far more cheap to maintain.
Anyway, I always think of it as something came out from the future.
(see also "The Incredible Blackbirds", part 1&2 here on youtube for an indepth explanation on their routinary usage)

Your brains are shit. This aircraft was developed in the late 50's-early 60's,for that era, this was so far advanced that any other country wanting to track it or shoot it down had to FIRST invent that technology, then develop it.

I'm sure you have something better to offer.

This aircraft is a testament to "Kelly" Johnson's genius and remarkable organizational ability. Being able to deliver his projects within his own time constraints. Both him and his planes are legends in their own right..

i like to watch all of them, im a true aviation enthusiast, i live 15 miles from beale afb, i wish i could have been old enough back then to apprectaite what the sr-71 was, but i still see u-2s alot, they are a very underestemated plane, as soon as you ever see one fly you will love it.

did you notice that the number of viewers goes down through parts 1,2,3,4,5 and 6. People must get bored.

That goes to show who among us are true aviation enthusiasts.. No more, no less.. Good observation there.

Did you notice that the parts aren't labeled as being out of 6? How do you expect everybody to know where the end is? I'm not even sure this is the end myself, is it?
