It is funny how whe always compare other sopranos sound to Callas but in this case we can say" listen how Callas sounds like Ponselle". Both just absolutely wonderful.
There is NO ONE on the OPERATIC STAGE today who can rise to this level where singing has become 'BELLOW-CANTO" rather than BEL CANTO as exemplified by
This is definitely NOT Ward's transfer; He never puts in echo chamber effects as is here. A definitive performance, as is almost everything but this underated singer who will never be surpassed and probably never be equalled. Thanks for posting!
Are these Ward's transfers from the Romophone CD? Which take it this? The unpublished take was transferred from a mint vinyl pressing, but the published take was transferred from a shellac copy. Unfortunately, this disc did not remain in the catalogues long enough to be available in a nice quiet "Z" or a "pre-war" pressing, and I think Ward used a 1950's HMV VB pressing. Great singing!
Rosa is simply divine, and a true operatic legend. From what she wrote, it is clear that she understood her artistry, just like Callas did. And of course, this is a sublime, ethereal rendition of this majestic piece.
Not a great fan of La Ponselle's voice and delivery, but her phrasing, intonation, and musicality are not just unassailable, but exemplars. This record is a great example of her best attributes. Any soprano who aspires to a big career could learn a ton from understanding what she does on this record.

Even after hearing this many times I still find it difficult to believe that there is a voice and perfromance of this calibre.

My favourite female voice. She was the best, her voice is so beautiful and pure. Thanks again MrCafiero for this gem.
