@leafs6976 sorry but you have no idea about the SS..
SS means "Schutzstaffel" which was formed out of the SA "Sturmabteilung" as a personal life guard for Adolf Hitler.
Until 1926 the SS was under the command of the SA then it become an indipendent paramilitary organisation within the NSDAP. The SS was the Police of the NSDAP.
@leafs6976 All of that is very untrue. Germany really feared nobody, and I doubt they even knew where Canada was. That whole storm trooper thing doesn't make sense. German Storm Troopers existed during WWI, they were named after a tactic in which soldiers would charge a trench after artillery barrages. It directly translates to Shock Troop. I don't know why you mentioned the SS. It doesnt have Stormtrooper anywhere in it. It stands for Schutzstaffel, which translates to Protection Squadron.
Yes. Canada joined in August 1914. The same month the war began. The USA did not join the war until April 1917, the same month that the Canadians stormed Vimy Ridge.
Canada answered the call so soon because they were still considered a loyal British colony (in fact the refuge of many of the loyalists who fled the American Revolution too) right?
I am driven to imagine if WWI would have ended more quickly if the American Revolution had been put down and the American Colonies thus threw their support behind Britain sooner.
@Number7smokesForEver the americans were there for what?.. couple of moths. correct me if im wrong but they still managed to loose FUCKLOADS of men in that time!
Yes, as a part of the Commonwealth... Greetings from Romania, neutral until 1916, when entered the War by the Allied side, 'til 1919 (so, after the Armistice), when our Army entered Budapest and fought against the Bela Kuhn's communists...
canadia joined the war when it broke out as canada is in the british empire so all british countries had to step foward. america only joined in mid 1917 as russia pulled out. so when america keep going on about, we would be speaking german (us english) if it wasnt for america and all tht bullshit.
although america did play a big part in ww2, they definatly helped us alot then, hence the landing they helped us with on utah beach and omaha beach while the british took gold beach, sword beach and juno beach :)
I knew about the blood and mud of Passchendale long before the mention of making a movie ever arrose. This underscores the failure of the Historical program in the Canadian education system. As someone with a passion for learning about the history of Warfare I learned about Canadian exploits when I was less than 12 years old. As a person who went through the Canadian public school system I know that most Canadian war exploits are unknown to most Canadians. We kicked ass in WW1, WW2 and Korea.
That's what annoyed me so much. Grade 10 we finally got to WW2 and 90% of it was about politics not about the actual events and stuff. I wanted to learn about the battles and stuff but nope they managed to make it boring.
Same. I started trying to read history textbooks on the Second World War when I was 8 years old after watching Saving Private Ryan and a couple of documentrys on the history channel and I own over 150 (All quite thick) books on WW2 now. Funnily enough I'm just starting to pay more attention to the First World War. I agree that the Canadian school system is a shambles when it comes to history. Its sad that you have to learn Canadian history yourself. Perhaps it makes you more objective though.

I can agree with you there - amusingly, however, it was a class in the Canadian public school system that got my interest sparked in History. :)
