@S13driftAZ Actually this commercial was aired before that superbowl. I remember before that game when they talked about Brett Favre, you heard this song in the background.
Oh and I'm a Broncos fan too btw! (: Green Bay is once again defending their title. At the beginning of the season I said if any team will stop them this year, it sure as hell won't be the Broncos! lol
I was 12 the first time I saw this commerical and it was the first time i'd ever heard bittersweet symphony. I really wish i could go back and watch myself listen to my favorite song of all time for the first time.
@seguidordejesus1 por eso odio este comercial , richard no permitio que se usara bitter en el comercial , pero luego el manager que se apropio de esta cancion les dio permiso a nike , simplemente detestable.
@seguidordejesus1 Pretentious bunk I believe. How sad his ego would rather have this song as a morose anthem for self-absorbed emo teens than as an inspiration with a much broader appeal.
The Verve made this song yet the Rolling Stones sue The Verve, take all royalties and let's Nike use it without Verve's permission... Life is bittersweet.
@TheGR8MenEWC the verve sampled the rolling stones without the stones' consent, won 100% royalties, and then sold it to nike for the ad. so the song (although performed by the verve) belongs to the stones and therefore they can do with it as they please. life is bittersweet indeed but hey shit happens, that's the law.
I completely miss the words nike in most of their ads,,,, because by the time they show it, at the end of the video, i am completely lost in the message they have just shown...
I was holding my newborn daughter the first time I saw this, imagining all that was ahead of her in life; brought tears to my eyes then as it does now. If a commercial can be a work of art, this is it.
The Verve were sued for copyright infringement by the Stones former manager, Allen Klein"Klein ended up with 100% of the royalties, capitalizing on the success of the song, licensed "Bittersweet Symphony" to Nike, who proceeded to run a multi-million dollar television campaign using the song synchronized to shots of its sneakers.Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were named as songwriters and ABKCO Music (and hence Allen Klein) was given full publishing rights to the song.
I choke up every time I see this. One of the most beautiful commercials every made. I don't think any other add encapsulates Nike's brand so effectively.
@drewlovesvideos That's why I LOVE this commercial. Capitalism rules, communism sucks! Take that you hippie artists! Only one that tops this is Nike's "Instant Karma" commercial. Lennon would've love it!
i love the song bittersweet symphony, but the verve used a sample from the rolling stones 'the last time' and their former manager has the rights to the majority of bittersweet symphonies sales
The Stones' manager has ALL the rights to the song. The Verve's performance royalties for recording the song are neglible, but they have no say in how the song is used.
YES! I remember this commercial so vividly...being a Packers fan and all and seeing Brett in the commercial. I had been lookin for this commercial on youtube for years but couldn't seem to find it. So glad I did
ddanor go to andrew oldem orchestra and listen to the last time it sounds just like bittersweet symphony its the string arrangement of the last time now the verve is one of my fav. bands but they did take a huge sample out of that song
This makes me sick. Allen Klein got away with using Richard Ashcroft's song because he somehow got the rights to it. The bit Ashcroft borrowed wasn't even used in this ad!!! That famous string riff was an original composition by Ashcroft and Wil Malone. How can Klein sleep at night! This is so wrong!
The string riff is simply a string version of the Adrew Oldham Orchestra's 'The Last Time'...which has a fair bit of strings in it to begin with. When you keep in mind very few people would know the song without the strings, it's not that outrageous that the rights go elsewhere.
This has got to be one of the best Nike commercials I have ever seen. It just rips me up inside. I can't watch it without getting goose-bumps. Not that many commercials can cause tears. A beautiful, inspirational work of art.

@ChocolateRocker23 1997. I know because it was right after the Packers won SuperBowl XXXI. It's one of the reasons you see Brett Favre in it at 0:50.

This was the Nike commercial that aired during the Superbowl that the Broncos and Packers were in. Of course the Broncos won. :)
