The ship has a modular armament system. Basically swap out shipping containers depending on mission........ I am sure there are CIWS, VLS that are out of sight as part of the stealth package.
Downright spooky lack of a bow wake, on that vessel. You have to look at the sponsons, just to get the idea that it's actually moving. A remarkably minimal stern wake, as well.
Does anyone know what she's armed with. Are those odd squares behind the deck gun, vertical launch missile silos? And what are those eight squares, on the hull sides, amidships?
Cumbersome? It's called stealth technology bro. It is faster than any ship before it and will look like sea trout on enemy radar. It's really amazing.
@DrPoon I don't doubt that its fast or stealthy but the wide profile just gives it that look. I'm not necessarily talking about the actual engineering but as a visual aspect the ship looks wide and therefore cumbersome. More of and aesthetic value is what i'm talking about.
It's 10 knots slower than LCS 1 in a sprint. It draws twice the water of LCS 1. Looks cool, but cool doesn't get you home. Huge flight deck, but no RAST system. Larger than LCS 1. 33% less range than LCS 1 at sprint speed. 20 year service life vice 30 for LCS 1. 4 days mission package changeout vice 1 day for LCS 1. .85 operational availability vice .95 for LCS 1. And the music sucks.
Why is there no video of Independence going full speed like Freedom? Why is there no video showing a launch/recovery of the rescue or mission boat like on Freedom? Why nothing showing any movement of the weapons systems? Why no video showing the landing of a helicopter like on Freedom? ( larger flight deck means nothing when it can't hold as much weight as the steel deck on Freedom. Aluminum is a very bad idea. Try building with it and you'll know why.
Well i dont know about money wise. but im pretty sure it would be less money to build a new Frigate system then keep spending money on older ships. (as ships gets older its harder and harder to find the peices and amo for the ship). As for as armement the LCS class is made to go after the Swarm (real fast speed boats). and plus the mission bay is not filled with anything yet so how can it have the weapons to go after the task it is gonna be given. you need to fill the mission bay up with weapons
No it's not. This is a transport/amphibous assault ship. Frigates are small, surface action war ships that were originally designed for the US Navy in the laste '70's for esscort duty.
Well this ship is going to replace older models of ships, how is it wasting money. Everyone in the world hates the U.S. but when something bad happens to there own country who do they turn to? The US most of the time first, and these kinds of ships will only strengthen our country.
No, its more of a hydrofoil. Ekranoplans "fly" across the water using the ground effect of air between the wing and water surface. The LCS doesn't "fly" but is pretty fast as far as big ships go.
@hikaru1136911 - The ship has a 57mm gun, not a 130mm. And "cool" isn't in the paint and colors manual; USN vessels are, overall, painted grey - there are a few exceptions. Nevertheless, this is an experimental hullform and I doubt you'll see more of them after this. LCS 1 is a tried and true hull type with the same waterjet propulsion as LCS 2, and its advantages are detailed by Chief0290 below. And yes, the music sucks.
The cargo bay on this ship is amazing... very large. Can haul a lot of equipment in a small ship. The aluminum hull will help save fuel costs. Just beef up the hull where the guns are to prevent flexing and you should be good to go.
But a gun has more immediate force. Would need to have a steel plate under the gun to prevent it from separating from the deck. Seriously, the Navy is looking into this.
Airline wings are designed to flex. in fact in the case of the 777 made to flex up to 26 feet from their resting position before failing. Rigidity is a no no for aircraft wings, rigid things tend to snap rather than bend. But aluminium can be engineered to be as rigid as you need it.
@dmine45 The reason we haven't used aluminum in ship construction in a while is because of it's relatively low melting point. There have been a few ship fires where the steel hull was all that really remained. The entire aluminum superstructure melted.
Nearly as big as a Fletcher classboat. Isn't it? What will she handle like around the Horn? Maybe even the North Sea... Bangin 45 knots jumpin from wave top to wave top. All it needs is a little more wing and it will look like the worlds largest float plane. Shame about the aluminum though, and the cost overruns, and the ships sank as an excuse to build more ships...Wow! We should permanently anchor an old carrier in the Med as a base for these
Huh? The builders trials were in the Gulf of Mexico. Are you confusing this with LCS-1 which was built in Wisconsin? This one is being built in Alabama.
Incorrect. These ships will not operate alone, rather on a network of surface ships, aircraft, and other intelligence via a computerized information sharing network. They may be out of sight, but they are far from alone.
here is how you canb figer out her speed. ill use the exsample i used on the freedom
takes 4 seconds to move through its own length in the water.378ft long divide by 4 seconds is 95.5 ft/secocond times 60 seconds in a minute, times 60 minuts in an hr is 340,200 divide by 5280ft/mile=64.43mph wich is just over 55 knots with a lod it will most likely be a touch slower now use this on lcs2 . if you can find out how many second it takes to move threw her own lenght
said by who? please post a link to a reputable source with content. 45 knots is hardly 60. It may be able to hit 60mph with no headwind on a good day, but not knots, that's a pipe dream. can you imagine the stress on an aluminum hull from that? Probably why is sprung a leak during trials and had to return to dock.
Wake has nothing to do with sonar, sonar pings off of the cavitation/noise from the props. Waves are a result of the cavitation/water being displaced as vessels moves through the water. Wake would have an effect on radar tho'....just not sonar
sonar is nothing more than a different name for radar, but in the water. Yes this ships wake has everything to do with sonar, as that is all it is is cavitation resulting from the waterjets.

If sonar passes through water and echoes back to the sonar source if it hits an object, how is it that sonar will key in on the wake from a boat?....unless your referring to the white wash/foam from the wake/waves. I just figured that sonar would pass right through the wake.
I think there is a misunderstanding of how sonar is used. Yes one or more frequency will be for solid objects, but there are others for movement, and a wake, although water just like the rest of the ocean, if moving will echo. And then there are active sonars, which can be detected by other vessels, and passive sonars which aren't SUPPOSED to be, but I'm sure most navies are working on it or already have it accomplished. yes i was referring to the massive amount of whitewash behind the boat.
yes but beware that 50% power does not mean that at full power her speed will double. it takes a ton of power to hit high speeds, which is what the turbines are for. Also, was it 50% turbine power? or diesel power? they will ramp the diesels up to full before they even use the turbines. I worked on Freedom and this is how they drive the ships. Turbines are for speed bursts. They can run longer, but your fuel goes bye bye really fast. something like 52 gallons a minute at full throttle.
@TFOKillSwitch Thanks--I wondered about that. And for sure LCS 1 can go a lot faster in mountainous seas. Take this one down the face of an 80 foot wave at 30 knots and you'll plough the bow under.
