Despite its age. I am willing to bet it's more efficient then a smart car or scion when you break down the work load per ton. There is nothing like scale of efficiency.
I'm not familiar with B&W engines - looks like it's an opposed piston design similar to the Doxford engine. Eight cylinder and two stroke I'm thinking.
@HasseMcspanky Pretty much none. In a two stroke engine like this, the blower is there primarily to scavenge the cylinder, rather than provide a boost.
I sailed for two years back in the 1950s on the old MV Comliebank.Twin screw, two B&W blast injection diesels. They were filthy, exhaust valves constantly burning out;cylinder head fires,a fine spray of lube oil, fuel oil and exhaust fumes swathed the cylinder tops when running. But,we kept them running for two years, despite several of the engineers jumping ship:they had had enough!
Saw this on a trip to copenhagen,, Amazing piece of machinery.. Its a museum now, so there are ALOT of different old diesel engines in there but this one is amazing.
@randombk82894 the general rule of thumb with most diesels is that whatever hp they make they will make roughly double the torque. so I would guestimate somewhere in the 40 to 50 thousand ft/lbs
@ph11p3540@lagabagaboom The engine is stationary in a power plant in Copenhagen and provide power to a part of the Danish electricity network in emergency situations, but mostly it runs for a few minutes for visitors.
The engine runs on pure diesel fuel in this case and drives a generator.
@TheMopar01 yes compressed air. some 5-8 years back we had a total blackout here on sealand and the cables to sweden was destroyed. all they could do to start up the grid again was actually to start this engine to get power to all the other powerstations and get them syncronized.
I would normally assume this would be burning bunker crude but despite being the cheapest, it is just belches abysmal pollution. This looks like a stationary power plant on land and so diesel should be used. Lovely sound. It's music to my ears.
@ph11p3540 Thinking about it, if they are only running it occasionally for visitors, it would make sense to run it on diesel, because it would be too much bother to keep all the fuel lines hot enough for heavy oil all the time.
@dodgecummisn2500 LOL then you would have the most badass dodge in the world! 22,500 HP with enough torque to move burj khalifa and new york city without any trouble
I thaught that this monster would run on heavy fuel oil but this is one monster of an engine fuck a 550 hp semi i want a 22,500 hp heavy fuel oil monster in my smart for-two

this engine has 984750 ft-lbs of Torque ! and formula is :
(5252 x horsepower)divided by rpm(120 in this case)
5252x 22500= 11817000 divided by 120 (rpm) = 98475 ft-lbs of torque

I see 8 exhaust ports and 8 sets of rocker arms, so I'd guess 8 BIG
cylinders in-line. Wonder if its still hooked up to a dynamo? Sounds
like a big generator torquing up as the engine picks up RPMs.
