  • Great! Thank you Questlove. A true MJ fan.

  • Thank you, Quest.

  • this was one of the best documentaries on Mj after his passing I would love to own on dvd

  • Does anyone know what happen to the special Michael Jackson Influence on Black Culture? This clip was part of that special but for some reason the special is no longer on YouTube :( it was a very insightful take on his music.

  • @ProudtobeaCanuck haha yea i was looking for it also but youtube deleted it : (

  • @caramello1989 oh really :( I hope someone else uploads it.

  • @ProudtobeaCanuck luckily theirs another video, look on my favourites, its there :)

  • @caramello1989 Ahhh Thank You! I favorite your video lol.

  • Is it me or did ?uestlove just make me realize how funky "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)" really is?

  • i love insightful comments on talented people....especially from other talented people!

  • @EllSieMovies Oh, all I'm saying is that he doesn't get the respect people give Prince, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye... Guys like that are always being called "artists" and "innovators," and it's said that they're faithful to the heritage of soul music. Michael is always being called a "superstar" or an "entertainer" but not often a real sincere "artistic genius." And most importantly, many people think the music is too "pop" to be great. Obviously, I don't agree...

  • salsoul records was doing remixes of their songs before the jacksons. check out the versions of hit and run by loleatta holloway and double exposure's my love is free. in fact, first choice's let no man put asunder had two remixes on their single by shep pettibone and frankie knuckles. check out the dates on the singles. lata

  • Love This. Thanks Questlove. RIP MJ.

  • Favorite part of the video is the comb in his hair as he is talking about the Jacksons.

  • I love it when musicians I respect take Michael seriously. Too many smart people write him off as an empty pop product.

  • Where can i find the full version of this documentary that the BBC did???? Thanks!!!

  • Apparently the "knock" before Eddie's part was him actually knocking on the door in the studio while they were recording. Quincy thought it would of been fun to leave it in. Crazy.

  • as if he just mentioned disco fucking duck with those classics. Disco Duck sucks shit.

  • I love Quest, and i love that he still keeps the afro pic in his hair. Real gangsta right there. Dont need his pants hanging on the ground, he just keeps his hair floating in the air. Oh and Gary, Indiana is not a place you want to go.

  • rip

  • I miss MJ :( I really do...

  • i could never play that song shake your body down to the ground

  • I've always been one of the few people to say I'm tired of people acting like Mj's career died after 89. Dangerous and the History cd's were great and are very underrated. White media seems hell bent on taking away his legacy yet keep saying lame as Elvis was ''the greatest of all times'' Yeah right!

  • There's a great piece of music used in this TV programme. It's an instrumental atmospheric piece with harp and horns and flute. I've been trying to find out what it is for some time now.

Anyone know what it's called or where it's from?

  • @Brotherbaylon that's MJ's favorite piece. "prelude to the Afternoon of a faun" by Claude Debussy

  • It's fascinating to hear Questlove talking here - and he's a brilliant musician and drummer. Fascinating.

  • he could have been a horse or a lion.. ha ha he is funny

  • Thanks for posting this positive informative video about Michael and his powerful influence and message. There are so many aspects of Michael the tabloids glossed over. To those who took the time to know the real Michael, his image was never tainted.

  • awesome

  • Questlove is so dead on... People who scoff at MJ and his legacy must somehow watch this. I already love him but this whole BBC Culture Show on MJ opened my eyes further and allowed me to really relish his cultural and musical impact. Even artists today (the Biebers and whoever) MUST watch this... And what I love about this docu is that puts the focus back on his music... his lasting legacy. Whether you like him or not, MJ CANNOT BE DENIED. Thank you for this post. Guys, lets share to everyone!

  • @ShamoneJackson u right mike was the king of music not just pop

  • Rebel Muzik for LOVE & PEACE."The black panther was not an accident".Thanks for uploading this!

  • Questlove is a clever man.

  • @SilentBombr He really is - He should go to schools and do public speaking. deep person

  • Enjoyed this insight!

  • r.i.p michael jackson

  • Great piece,no surprise really coming from the BBC,great to seeGregTate still at it!..

    arXter,Thanks for the post!

  • mjs the best

  • Great interview and perspective Questo.

  • Loved this - thanks for uploading.

  • all of his music was excellent it gradually got better with time and kept up with the times as i recall. i agree with the other poster they act as if everything after thriller and off the wall was shit and in fact it dangerous and bad were excellent and much to some ppl's chagrin i actually liked invincible.and blood on the dance floor.. to me he was a genuise at staying on top

  • gimme a break Michael had extreme musical talent ,all his music was wonderful ,try and top his music bet you can;t

  • Off the Wall was significant in the fact it was MJ's first adult solo record that went platinum plus. Thriller is significant because it is the largest selling album of all time by a black man, he broke all of those barriers being a man of color. Bad was good, but the critics hated it and Dangerous is good too, but it didnt do what Thriller did. It seems like once you have an album that is big, you have to top it the critics always compare to the big album. How could he top thriller's sales.

  • That's not my point.

First of all- HIStory outsold Off the Wall in literally EVERY country except the US/UK. He had a wonderful streak from Thriller to HIStory. Bad, Dangerous, and HIStory sold nearly the same amount outside of America. The overall sales fell because of America. Bad outsold Thriller in the UK, Germany, and France. Dangerous outsold Bad in Australia and Canada. HIStory outsold Dangerous in Japan and Austria. So it wasn't just down and down, That's only in America.

  • First of all you are saying MJ's early music is overrated and thats not true. Those albums are very signifcant. I believe the reason Bad did not win any grammys is because the critics hated it. You know critics compare every album MJ made to Thriller and I never sad those albums weren't good, but Thriller and OTW have their place is music history. MJ was also snubbed when he was only nominated for one grammy during the otw era. Its his race if you ask me.

  • hey i somewhat agree with bjesgirl in the fact that his albums in later years were critically overlooked and also underappreciated.. My all time is dangerous, i think its his masterpiece but i agree with you that off the wall and thriller are cultural gems, Off the wall WAS an amazing break out album for his solo swing. and thriller was just meant to be a success, with the videos and the moonwalk with it. I just love MJs music and wish his work was more appreciated in later years.

  • I see what you are saying. I think critics called him washed up, has been, trying to outdo thriller every album after thriller. I like dangerous, its awesome, but I think his eccentricities overshadowed his music. People tended to focus on that than the music. I think that is why dangerous, bad, etc didnt get its just due.

  • Exactly. I also think his "eccentricities" were exaggerated greatly by the media. Ive looks at interviews from the early-mid 80's and compared them to the interviews in recent years where he's labeled "Wacko"- and to me, its ultimately the same, his words i mean. I just think he was misunderstood, and he was judged too harshly, and he didnt get a fair shot. It seems he was in a world of hurt..for a long..long time.

  • completely agree

  • The critics opinion has nothing to do with the music or the sales really.

It has everything to do with his face and his percieved sanity. Remeber that by Bad he was 10 shades lighter and like 6 nosejoibs in. You think they could give him a fair chance? The tabloids were already dead set against him and the media was anti Michael and would never look back from there. Remeber the grammys snub in 1988? What do you think that was about?

  • The critics opinion have everything to do with him not wining a grammy in 1988. I agree with you, we need a documentary on MJ"S entire music career. All of his music was magical.

  • hey i agree with you but i didnt see this comment, i agree that his newer music is overlooked, and his later stuf esp. dangerous is my fave but off the wall and thriller are certainly not overrated!

  • Somewhere in this commentary the name QUINCY JONES should appear!!!!

  • This docu was an hour long in total, it was very positive and insightful until the last 15 minutes, thereafter, it glossed over his artistry, with a brief mention of bad and dangerous, but mainly focusing on negativity, rendering in the usual tabloid fodder.

  • Exacly. I'm tired of seeing 2 hour documentaries. First hout covers J5, Off the Wall, & Thriller.

The with his other big albums (Bad, Dnangerous & HIStory) its all tablod fodder. Its like "he had a fake marriage with Elvis' daughter!" oh, and he released some insignificant album called HIStory. I've yet to see a documentary covering all his music. It always stops at Thriller, and then becomes tabloid fodder. Celebrate ALL his music. Not just what he made when he was supposedly "normal."

  • I couldnt agree more! I of course love thriller but i am more into Michaels work in the 90's through the millenium. My all time fav. album is Dangerous, to me its perfection! and youre right tho,in interviews during the off the wall/thriller era and interviews in the 2000's he was the same person, he basically said the same exact things, about his love for children, he said it when he had thriller and he said it when he was labeled a "freak" for loving children. ppl got too judgemental :(

  • Thanks to the BBC, we have an intelligent documentary about Michael. We do not need all these stupid reports and naughty lies about his life.

  • wow thanks for this

  • I am not discovery Michael and the Jackson 5's work from the seventies and it's amazing. I wish I had this music sooner, very inspirational and great to listen to.

  • I'm learning all sorts of important information from this documentary. Thank you so much for uploading!

  • EXCELLENT WORK!!!

This is the kind of stuff media should focus on. Thanks so much for uploading this! The quality is great!

  • i totally agree

  • BRAVO! I LOVE the BBC. INTELLIGENT DOCUMENTARY . . . WE NEED MORE INTELLIGENT ARTISTIC MUSICAL HISTORY TYPE documentaries on MICHAEL

  • That was very interesting. Is this an excerpt from a longer documentary.....or is this only what is available

Because I would love to see the rest of this.

  • He will be forever celebrated.

  • good point...like the last part the black panther analysis and his home gary..miss u mike!! RIP

  • Nice insight...

  • EXCELLENT ANALYSIS-Well edited

  • thats interesting, ive always thought that

"There was a I'm still black under tone to alot of his work"
