Here is a fun little anecdotal story for you to use when considering gun control. I came from a country where not everyone has guns to defend themselves. At least not the minorities..most of those minorities are now gone. Dead or Fled for their lives. by the way, they came to the US. Just about all have guns and I know of very few who commit murder. Go home and watch Harry Potter and pretend everything is okay. Leave it to the true Americans to pick up the slack.

Guns provide a sense of power.Growing up in Brooklyn NY for 30yrs i've been threatened by teenagers with guns. I've seen altercations between teens talking alot of stuff whip a gun out and shoot the other teen in the face. They arent crazy they just don't care until someone does it to them. I hate to say it, but in a way I agree with Rudy. In a country where lunatics are armed to the teeth, it's important to keep guns out of criminals and mentally instable people. If you try to take them all away it would lead to civil upheaval and a huge black market wave, leaving the unarmed powerless.

It's really hand guns that are the issue though, ban them within city limits and spend more police hours weeding out underground markets to curtail shooting deaths.

The only problem is, that people change often and unpredictable. Take a certain amount of social pressure or an unrecognizable disease and a mental stabile person or a non-criminal becomes a lethal being through having easy access to guns. in hospital psych wards, violence is statistically lower than it is in general population wards. I don't know what the stats are for crime, but it is simplistic to assume that mental conditions predispose people to acting violently. You need to see what research finds, not just what makes sense from your arm chair.

I did say that it was tough to compare a drivers license to a gun license but you still need to be TESTED. You need to know how to use it safely. Knowledge is key here.

You don't have to be clinically ill to go on a rampage either. Maybe there is less violence in psych wards because they are medicated so heavily and not nearly as crowded. Also, a lot of those violent prisoners PROBABLY did have access to a firearm.
