  • Nanci seems to blow Emmy Lou away on this song!

  • @EdArmstrong1 That's because she's a much better singer.

  • I love it when Nancy says, "One more time, for Kate!" So many of us can't help thinking of Kate Wolf when we hear this song.

  • I can't hear Emmy!!! Where's the mixer? Darn!

  • nice...

  • thank you for posting this....breaks my heart every time i hear it

  • I own one album of Nanci's. Just the one. The amount of times I've ironed, washed, dishes, folded laundry etc singing my heart out with Nanci are numerous. Even rocked my baby to sleep humming along. Bless the woman.

  • Nanci describes her affections for LBJ on one of her albums and ....she's from Texas! Nanci, hey I don't mind, you can come back to the northeast with your LBJ button and whatever you want to wear because we love to hear your songs. Please come to Tupelo in Londonderry NH. Been living with Nanci in the soundtrack for almost 30 years now -

  • Wow. Im 65 years old and never before heard of Nanci Griffith. What a find. Thanks.

  • @saullouis

Nanci Griffith is just one of many artists who will always make me grateful for Austin City Limits, because that is where I found them.

  • Please credit Kate Wolf as the songwriter.

Nanci does that herself at 2:59 .

  • Please credit Kate Wolf as the songwriter.

  • Yes, Nanci Griffith is a great talent. She writes great songs and plays and sings well. But FCOL what's with the LBJ buttons? This woman is kind of a flake. I wish she wasn't so damn political. Shut up and sing.

  • These 2 Women together . . . I swear, no 2 do it better & besides . . . their Babes !

  • Beautiful song. Could have done without the off key male voice in the background.

  • @ben909ben Yeah, whoever it was needs to be fired or get a hearing aid. Don't like to be mean about it, but when a person works very hard for years trying to sound great and then have a amateur sound tech screw up the sound it's very aggravating.

  • great video, seen these two great singers in Scotland and they are great performers

  • Is this a new years bash or something no one's listening.

  • This is the only song written by Kate Wolf that does not make me want to commit suicide.

  • @SlumdogSuperstar try Desert Wind - up tempo, sexy, etc... Here in California not too bad though?, and of course Weaverville, that will make you laugh...

  • Her political buttons are worn with humor. Nixon Now!

  • Oh thats great! Thank you so much! Big hello from Berlin!

  • Two wonderful singers......Thank you

  • you melt my candy coating!!!

  • Nanci's singing is great. But anyone who wears an LBJ pin can not be playing with a full deck. Or, they must hate the Vietnamese people. Or they must be totally unable to read history with an honest eye.

  • @Amfortaz Nancy wears it as a tribute to his work on civil rights. She is a devote pacifist, who speaks passionately in her concerts of her hatred of war. Her ex-husband is a Vietnam Vet, and she has travelled extensively in Vietnam with the Vietnam Veteranas of America campaign against landmines. She has written many songs about her love of Vietnam and the Vietnamese people. Check out her album "Hearts in Mind." You can never accuse Nanci Griffith of being uninformed.

  • Note the big LBJ pin Nanci has on lol........

  • Two of my favorite singers together! Heaven!!!!!

  • FIRST INTERSTATE BANK! YAY! This clip wouldn't be complete without the camera panning past that logo, would it? :-) Well, anyway, I really liked this song.

  • @JoshuaH688 Very keen eye. Makes me want to check my bed before I go to sleep lest some corporate bug is among my sheets. Scary.

  • Kate Wolf's finest tune - may she rest in peace - and thanks to Nanci, Emmylou and the whole crew for a wonderful rendition of this timeless classic.

  • She is an American Treasure.... CRC

  • Since I live next to the Great Divide this song has special meaning...Thanks for sharing..

  • Brilliant

  • the very beautiful, Nancy Griffith

  • I love Nanci and Emmylou, but Kate's version will always be my favorite. I spent an afternoon sitting with Kate and listened to her play her songs. It was one of the best days of my life. Her music was so pure.

  • Nanci Griffith has a puckish sense of humor. She is also from texas. I think that that is where all the campaign buttons come from.

  • Gotta love Nanci, but what's up with the LBJ button? Is she aware of how many men died because of his inaction/stubborness/trechery?

    Nanci please.

  • She seems to wear an LBJ button a lot. LBJ also was responsible for the Civil Rights Act, which I think she would highly support. And she's from Texas, so perhaps it's also pride in a native, although I never saw her with a Bush button. I've also seen her with a Nixon/Agnew button. Perhaps she just likes presidential buttons?

  • Thank you for this clip. Two angels singing together.

  • thanks for this!

  • Nina Gerber's guitar makes this extra special. Please consider tagging her in the info section to make this easier to find.

  • Nina is not on this clip as far as I can see ?

  • Yeah the lead guitarist is a male; there is no sign of Nina or any other woman except Nanci and Emmylou.

  • That's Doug Lancio playing the guitar solo.

  • @wacobro Spot-on about Doug Lancio- who's also done some fine work with Patty Griffin and Gretchen Peters. One of the really fine folk accompanists, IMHO.

  • I think Nina played mostly with Kate Wolff --there's a version of this song somewhere that features the two of them

  • Nina was in Nanci's band at one point, but later than 1995 - around 1999 I think.

  • Nina played a few shows with Nanci but she was never an official member of Nanci's band. I saw dozens of Nanci concerts during the Other Voices and Flyer era and Nina wasn't involved in any of them.

  • Nina joined later; her lead guitarists at that time were Frank Christian and Lee Satterfield (certainly the latter was present when she played London in 1994). Nina Gerber was present on the later Other Voices album, though.

  • @berkeleygirl1962

there is a version of Nanci and Emmylou doing this song that features Nina Gerber wonderfully on YouTube. It is the one that is 5:29 long. Sound is a little better too,it's lovely.

    Thanks for posting 1000M

  • @berkeleygirl1962 She's not picking here.. Don't know who or even if she is playing regularly any more. She played on all of Kate's stuff and every now and then with Nancy, just not here.

  • @coleyman1 I have seen Nina G. several time around sonoma county in the last 2 years. She was still amazing.

  • Who ever says dreams don't come true.... I remember one Sunday night between sets at "the Hole" Nanci saying how much she would love to sing with Emmy Lou.

  • I absolutely adore both Nanci Griffith and Emmylou Harris, but NO ONE can sing this song like Kate Wolf could

  • I agree. This is not to put down Nanci or Emmylou. But it's not unusual for a songwriters' renditions of their own songs to have a special something that covers usually can't match. Kate had an unusual & very soothing voice, very well suited to the songs she wrote.

  • There was also something about Kate's sad and untimely death (which obviously she couldn't have predicted when she wrote and recorded the song), that resonates now when listening to her version of the song. I can't quite verbalize it, but "Across the Great Divide" and "Unfinished Life" both really seem to sum up Kate Wolf's lifelong journey.

  • Yes, I'm told Kate wrote this song when a friend was facing death, & though she wrote it years before her own diagnosis of leukemia the lyrics seem to reflect momentous turning points like that. That's what I don't like about this video of Nanci doing the song. She has a big smile on her face when she's singing about the owl calling, etc. & she doesn't really seem to connect with the lyrics.

I saw/heard Nanci do this in live concert a few years ago & I didn't get that impression then.

  • @mthivier -i hear you...there's almost a mourning, haunting aspect to kates singing of this

  • I LOVE YOU, NANCI!

  • My entire camp sang this song growing up around the campfire. It means more to me than any other song. And this version is perfect. What a beautiful voice to go with the most beautiful words.

  • my favorite Kate Wolf song, sung by my two favorite artists . i'll be here a lot.

  • Thanks for posting. Used to do this one at coffee houses!

  • For the record, it was this very video that made me an instant fan of the enourmously talented Griffith...rock on!

  • Great, two beautiful voices.

  • It would take voices with the quality of Nancy Griffith's and Emmy Lou Harris's to do justice to one of Kate Wolf's greatest songs.

    Thanks for posting it.

  • Nanci's and Emmylou's voices were made to go together.

  • One of my favourite too! Sorprise! Ms. Harris!

  • Beautiful!!! Such fine ladies!!!

  • One of my fav. Griffith songs! Thanks for the great vid!

  • Nancy has got to be one of the greatest songwriters of all time!
