If they had been left alone, they would have still been able to break shit and get the protesters blamed (because guys in black breaking shit would be the only clip that gets shown on TV news). Calling them out was the best course of action, because it was the only way to prevent the cops achieving their main objective.

It would have been better if they hadn't laid a finger on the cops, though. Still, that's the worst aspect of it. The cops and press cannot spin this into a violent protest, and the real protesters come out smelling like roses regardless. Either the cops admit they were there to make trouble, or the protesters are actively rooting out the troublemakers in their own ranks.
