Its like they couldn't afford the CGI to show the Sabertooth Tiger attacking the guy so they did the next best thing they could while they could still call the movie "Attack of the Sabertooth." It's totally random, like in one of the Naked Gun movies when the guy falls seemingly to his death out the window of a skyscraper, but lands safely on a fabric awning over the door. But then randomly gets mauled by a lion.
