@fourmy1060 I agree, very effective performance and very expressive one according to the image, also very appealing to me showing true emotions, passion and not only a "pretty mask". Actually, if opera isn't so "popular" is IMO more fault of those in charge of productions as they just follow the vicious circle: they hire mainly commercial singers who can please the crowd and lowering the level of serious opera, like those who make sitcoms and make more money, but intelligent people don't watch it
@jewelmarkess He should sing not only at the Met but all over the world! And please, those in charge of such productions, we want to hear MEN in castrati roles! Enough with this weird fashion to give women such roles. At least first of all they should give it to Jose Lemos as Arsamene and Nicholas Spanos as Serse, or on the contrary! It's not the point:-). Only if there are not enough CTs of this highest class the best women can sing it too. But please don't humiliate MEN that women are MANLIER!
@serenaluce I agree - he should be singing all over the world. To be fair, the Met did cast countertenors this year, but just not Spanos or Lemos - I wish it were them.
This is stunningly vibrant... I really wish I could have attended this production. Lemos explores the pathos of this aria with his vibrant resonance, colors and shadings that are not always present in Handel. What more can I say.... In Bocca al Lupo... Toi, Toi, Toi!!!
@ariodante76 I couldn't agree more with you here! It's HANDEL I want to hear and see,and not "castrated" sweet sounds and making "innocent" faces! Castrati were not teenagers stopped in their delelopment after castration as many people mistakenly think as they are brainwashed by PJ's promoters that what he sings is true baroque! Before any opera CHURCH used castrati to lure people to temples with SENSUAL PLEASURES as they began to lose faith! They couldn't do it with innocent boys and women!Period
Ah, Lemos excels at baroque music also. What beautiful coloratura and expressiveness his voice shows! than kyou for posting. As serenaluce says, we want more!
@arpeggio1358 Oh, absolutely! And with better quality of recording would be even better:-). But I just can't miss GREAT stuff no matter in what quality of recording! We are so lucky that we've finally discovered one and only Jose Lemos and have a choice of his videos now at least on YT. I think it's a crime for those in charge of opera productions that they CONCEAL from the world HIS incredible voice like Nicholas Spanos' too and hire mediocre singers for heroic roles just to ENTERTAIN people!
@serenaluce I often think that the people in charge of hiring at opera companies haven't a clue about what they're doing. I cancelled my season tickets to my local opera company in great part because the singers were of such low quality. I'd love it if they'd hire someone like Lemos or Spanos, but I don't think it's going to happen. It's their loss. Opera companies need to see that there are people who want excellent singers and not just flashy productions.
Very effective and excellent performance! Bravo : I liked it very much indeed.
