  • I brought a wetsuit and speargun, plus mask and flippers. I'll be putting them back on ebay as I've decided I'm too scared of sharks.

  • @orbital92hotmail man u are the biggest pussy have a look at the statics with shark attacks while people have been spearing its like a 1 in amillion chance all you have to do is know how to behave around them dont give up on spearfishing its a great sport

  • @killerrat2010 yeah one day you'll eat those words....punn intended

  • @jgmetals81 i dont think i will mate i bet ur one of those people that sit in front of the pc all day and miss out on life

  • @killerrat2010 no not really...I have some time to kill in front of the computer now and again because I'm self employed...something you brit socialists know nothing about. I actually spend alot of time outside kayak fishing, skiing...golf is fun too. Take it easy.

  • @jgmetals81 so is diving you under achiever, i guess the rumor is true about people who work at home, they cant fit into society and are a socially unbalanced metally and physically. now switch back to redtube.com, leave the diving for the pros. take it easy

  • @MrJoshstubbs First off....im sorry if that is really you last name. Secondly, I dont work at home. Third, only someone who is extremely uncomfortable with himself would chime in and attack someone that way...and lastly learn how to spell and structure a sentence. Take it easy.

  • @MrJoshstubbs your ignorant assumptions about people you know nothing about is astounding by the way....very revealing

  • @jgmetals81 , still watching redtube, you should really switch off man maybe go to kenya and get aids, at least then u might make sum friends. but on a side note yes i am extremely uncomfortable with myself being an electrical engineer rolling in and grossing $2900 a week in the mines. maybe i could buy ur plane ticket over there ?

  • @MrJoshstubbs Why do you think anyone cares what you make....btw...people who own and operate their own fut/opts and prec. metals brokerages earn more than 140k a year....sorry to say. But hey, you wanted to go there. Anyway, your nonsensical comments about redtube and kenya and so forth have me inclined to think that this isnt worth my time from an intellectual standpoint...but thanks for playing anyway.

  • If I'm spearfishing does this scare fish off?

  • Check my shark dive video!!!

  • this is an astounding application of known science and natural phenomena. WOW

  • look how fucking fast that mako is! crazy!!

  • Lenard Lopate interview (great interview) 61 year old Diana Nyad, who plans to swim from Havana to Florida this (2011) August without a shark cage using only the Shark shield

    Listen/download (27 minutes ) wnyc.org shows/lopate/2011/may/13/legengary-swimmer-diana-nyad

  • I've just come back from a tour of the east coast of Australia and bought one in Sydney whilst I was out there. 1 question if anyone knows as it's not in the manual, on the long cable that comes out the freedom 7 shark shield - what is that loop of blue wire sticking out about 1/2 way down for ???? Some marketing pics show it and some don't....

  • I use the freedom 7 more for the sharks that you dont see coming likegreat whites and tiger sharks.

  • Shark Shield EPIC FAIL video on the FreediveInt Youtube channel. Its hilarious...

  • @FreediveInt this is a american made dodgy version that dosnt even use batteries, to come on to this video and direct them to another one that dosnt work is fucken fail

  • this device is just funny :) what if it fail

  • a guy got taken in australia couple days ago by two sharks...was he wearing this device????

  • @DrYenisun Who? can you support this claim

  • i'm getting one

  • The shark shield does shock you if you touch the electrode at the end of the line.

We have a rule, guys with a shark shield get in the boat last, that way for guys that dive without them, you don't get shocked in the face.

  • why doesnt the shark shield shock u

  • Nice work !!

  • Seems to be a lot of scientists commenting on this video. Only way to know its not 100% is when someone with one gets bitten. I for one am saving for this. and @supnum1g - That was almost unbearable for me to read. Almost like a shark getting too close to the shark shield.

  • supnum1g: are you a shark? or a scientist? do you have a Ampullae of Lorenzini in the tip of your nose. I have personal experience with the device. Unfortunately i suspect that if i were to tell you about it i'm sure you could disprove with some vague fantasy of being a shark. dont air your ignorance, you silly billy you!

  • @blonkonkonk lol i never said it wouldnt work i was just saying nothing is perfect and i would still be careful even with it on

  • mm its a good idea but if i were a shark that thing would just piss me off and id bite the fk outta you so.... yeah id rather not place too much trust in it.

  • @supnum1g its desighned to piss the shark off and thats the very reason they wont attack, listen to whats being said instead of casting opinionated aspertions

  • i purchaseed a shark shield for spearfishing in the gulf and even with bloody fish on the stringer NO SHARKS!!!!!! im a firm believer i never dive without one

  • Comment removed

  • neat idea medium for a repellent. good stuff-

your "turn on the shark shield as approaches"

test subject footage seemed improbable at best.

maybe work on that area ..great tho

  • It doesn't appear to be 100% but from what I gather it can offer a significant deterant, meaning if a shark is around you, its a significant decrease in the likelyhood of an attack, although an attack is still a mild possibility.

  • i just got the 4th model for $200

  • I heard of a diver who was wearing one of these and got killed any way. I think his name was Paul Buckland.

  • @NMoulana turns out he was wearing a 'shark pod' and didn't have it on or something, google his name and a good article comes right up from the South Australia government. I am still considering if I should buy one of these for surfing in Oregon.

  • Now all thats left to do is stab one of these into the whites neck to watch it squeal. Then it'll be all over the news.

They do this with homing tags all the time so peta shouldnt be all up your ass with lawsuits about it.

Seriously though, that white shark didn't look that uncomfortable, I say you should try this. At least get footage of it less than a foot away from the thing.

  • is funny how he did a thumbs up to show that everythings ok

  • if im free diving when i spear fish, can i use this? does it deter cudas or game fish. also will i be getting constantly getting shocked?

  • no u dont get shocked i have a freedom 7,when u r in the water,u can hear a faint clicking noise -thats all,iv had small fish follow the antenna sometimes ,when they swim really close to it but doesnt really attract or scare fish away the only time iv got a shock from it is when i grabbed both ends of the antenna out of the water ,it gave my arm a bit of a kick, much like touching a spark plug lead on a mower or small engine, just turn it off before u get out the water

  • 2 questions....Will the Shark Shield scare away reef fish or other fish?

Also is there a low battery warning?

  • @stanakanats no it doesn't scare away fish at all, it only effects certain sharks.

  • it does have a low batt warning, when u turn the unit on a green light blinks, when u put it in the water and the protective feild is active the light turns solid green,it should be good for about 4 continues hours, when the batt gets low, a second red light appears flashing alongside the solid green light, but when the green light starts blinking the feild is stopped working ,but hopfully u are out the water by that time lol

  • Shark Shield....Ive been freedive Spearfishing for the past 8 months in Maui Hawaii...I learned from the locals on the island who believe in "Amakua" where they would never use a shark repellent....I chose to respect the native ways...Ive come in contact with many white tips and Tigers! Now, I dont spearfish with the natives to often anymore...My question is: Freedive spearfishing and how do I go about it with the "Sharkshield"? (We dont use tanks) Thank You!

  • @NoGuyComesClose im on kauai, i have a new one(never used) for sale cheap. email me

  • My prosthetic arm has steel, would that affect the field?

  • @bugre19 I doubt it mate, I have a 5foot carbon speargun with steel spear, most divers have a lot of metal with them tank etc........

  • I had a dream the other night and there were two sharks in it that had just given birth in the water near me ( I was on a floating dock) but the sharks swam up to me, and it was a very strange feeling. I could tell which one was the mother and the father, and they felt very nonthreatening and communicative, almost like people. with personalities and all, so strange

  • I just speared for the first time with this unit yesterday, the lead hit my arm a couple of times and I got a little whack through my suit which was OK and gave me confidence it was doing something. I didn't see any sharks yesterday but had a big bull shark come over to me on one of my last dives so would like to see it in action against a shark and find out if it actually does anything?.

If anyone's into spearing and not affiliated to the company but has some results please let me know.

  • @superdonyoungy - do you know how much this usually runs cost wise?

  • @23usmc23 $700Au, I got mine thrown in with a some spear guns and stuff so they knocked some money off, and it was about $500. I feel a lot more confident with it.

  • @superdonyoungy so with the spearguns and shark shield ur total was $700? thats sounds good. i was lookign at a retailer and they were charging $870. where did you buy at?

  • @23usmc23 send me a PM and I'll email you the shop, they sell a lot of spearfshing gear and would send it to the US.

  • That's a great must-have equipment! But the ankle electrode seems cumbersome...

  • has anyone tried this or have one

  • This company should make them more affordable. Get the chinese on the job boys. There going to run the show sooner or later anyway.

  • does it work on killer whales?

  • I've been confronted with a 3.5 m great white shark with a mate while wearing the shark shield. Both of us had several large fish on our stringers. The shark came to within about 5 m of my mate and turned off suddenly. I won't dive without a shark shield. That said, I have seen footage of sharks in a feeding frenzy apparently unaffected by the shield. I do believe that more testing could be shown along the lines suggested by Cyberal about 5 posts ago. I agree.

  • I had one they work fantastic. I had the surf model but i tell ya when you get into a boat and the electrode goes between ya legs you know about it...

  • i am so buying one of these bad boys!

    Amazing

  • I want to buy one

    Is that cheap?

    How much AUD? not USD

  • Surf unit is 515 US or 741.86 AUD

SCUBA unit is 670 US or 965.14 AUD

  • I worked with Ian (the presenter) for 11 years and was with him for most of the testing including the testing with Great Whites. You ask about the other 330 species... they're not dangerous. As for a great white eating one on a surfboard, I've never seen it or the footage, I'm not saying it didn't happen but surely there'd be footage? If it's 90% effective then that's an 90% improvement.

  • Did he say "There are over 350 species of shark (30 known to be dangerous)...

and I've tested this on over 20 species. " Wouldn't that be leaving the consumer to test it out on the remaining 330 species??!?

  • No, you dunce, it would leave them to test it on the other 10 dangerous species, because you don't need it for the other 320 NON-DANGEROUS species.

  • thats kool

  • Hi, I saw a TV program in South Africa, where they showed how the Shark Shield actually aggravates Ragged Tooth sharks. On the program they agree that it works for most shark types, but NOT for the Ragged Tooth. Please test... as the last thing I want is a more aggressive raggy behind me.

  • im getting one and I hope I never see the shark period. If i do I will be wearing one of these.

  • The demographics from testing involves hundreds of pgs over years of work and its not feasible for posting.Independent testing by military was comprehensively carried out prior to giving the Shark Shield Company a NATO procurement number.Unfortunately military will not divulge its testing for obvious reasons--suffice to say the granting of a NATO number obviously indicates successful testing.

  • I am not sure how comforting that is, the military has been known for being wrong, especially the US navy, especially with sharks! anyone seen the shark special on the ww2 navy boat that sank and half the crew got eaten by sharks because they splashed when the sharks came around??

  • To all who may be concerned, Below is an outline of answers to all questions:

Shark Shield's are primarily designed to deter sharks in their investigative mode. Having said that, in the many thousands of tests in the worst possible baited & bloodied environment we have always managed to deter them

The unit has been commercialised. We have Govt & professional bodies using shark shield as a mandatory policy (fisheries, museums, uni's etc.)

  • In regards to the testing such as finding feeding sharks, putting out a fresh juicy piece of chum etc. As previously asked..ALL OF THIS HAS BEEN DONE SUCCESSFULLY!

People need to understand that Shark Shield is a company providing a revolutionary new safety device and we endeavour to provide the safest possible product available today WORLDWIDE!

  • then what happened to Paul Buckland?

  • @zuludivR The coroner found "that Mr Buckland was wearing his ‘Shark Pod’ device incorrectly at the time of the attack on 30 April 2002" and the Shark Shield is much improved device to the one that he was wearing.

  • I have looked at this vid a few times over the last couple of years.

I live in Eureka, California. Another white infested area, in fact the area I dive in is south of here and a place where a couple years ago a man had his head removed by a white.

My question is, I like to spear fish and free dive for abaloni. Will the shark shiels scare away any fish I may be trying to stalk?

  • i would propose the following tests:

-simulate splashing on the surface and movement that sharks are attracted to with a dummy diver wearing the shield. show repeated tests with various species and show all results, obviously the makers are not suggesting it works all the time? (this can be cut together fast for a promo video)

-and the ultimate test. find some feeding sharks and put a nice juicy piece of chum out there with the shark shield on it.

  • nice piece of technology, but i still wouldnt get in the water if i knew there were sharks :-/

  • wow

  • sharkshield dot com dot au

I just bought the Surf model of this technology. Im a South Aus Surfer and trust me you need them down here. The White Pointers get pretty friendly down South

You can get the new surf model direct from the Shark Shield company or from some surf stores.

  • Great invention!

  • I am a diver. Why don't you produce documentation from these alleged independent parties who have observed these scientific tests an the results of them????

  • does it work out of water or barely in water, like for surfers (i'm kinda paranoid).

  • they fail to show the part where the makers/inventors of this technology say that if the shark is in its "frenzy mode", travelling up towards you from beneath at great speed, nothing not even a little electrical wave pulse will stop it. They admit that themselves...

  • This is not fair, guy.

  • Sorry, what is not fair?

  • And how stupid do you have to be to end up with a shark that worked up?

  • well the makers is the person who uploaded this video

  • Matt, Yes we, the manufacturers, posted this. Is there a problem with that?

  • I was replying to this comment "they fail to show the part where the makers/inventors of this technology say that if the shark is in its "frenzy mode", travelling up towards you from beneath at great speed,"

    have ya's said that?

  • It's been commercialized yet?

  • I have a shark shield (2 to be exact) and they also work on the sharks cousins those being the sting rays.

how ever there is certain species of sharks that no1 has ever told me they have seen it work on, that being a wobbygong (not that it really needs to work on that anyway

  • Sharks, stingrays and skates are all part of the Elasmobranch family. The two common features are they have no skeleton and they all have Ampullae of Lorenzini. The issue with Wobbygong is that they are bottom feeders and their Ampullae are only on their underneath side and therefore somewhat protected from the field. They are affected if off the bottom - same applies to Rays.

  • I aint gunna be the first person to try and turn one upside down to find out LOL!!

  • well...why ur not sure u just have shocked that sharks?did u tested it a time BEFORE a shark was there and when they arrived they didnt come closer?

  • The testing is done in a very scientific and controlled manner in the presence of independent scientists and marine biologists. The sharks are attracted to the area where there is a bait with a Shark Shield attached but turned off. As they attempt to take the bait it is pulled away. The unit is then turned on and the bait replaced. As the shark comes for the bait it is left in the water for the unit to do its stuff. This has been replecated hundreds of times and the bait has never been taken!!!

  • nice but how does it work??

  • The Natal Sharks Board discovered the electrical wave form that is used in the Shark Shield. All Sharks have electrical receptors in their snouts - Ampullae of Lorenzini. They use these receptors as close range sense. The wave form that the Shark Shield puts into the water creates a strong electrical field that the Ampullae pick up. It basically over powers a sense that the shark cannot turn off

  • wow
