I love Bernard Hepton as Toby. He makes him such a delightful character, even in Tinker Tailor, where he has none of the flair he acquires in the Smile's People. I never even heard about the books or the BBC shows before seeing the new movie, and now I've become a fan. Love it and thanks for posting.
I love this. Really captures the moods. It's made me get my old VHS tapes out, I'm going to settle and down and watch the whole 5hrs tonight.
I wish you'd included the General, and Villem and Stella, and Mikhel and Elvira, and the scenes in the eel factory, and the Kretschmars' barbecue, and more of Grigoriev, and Otto Leipzig, and Mme Ostrakhova with her pistol ......
But hey, there's only so much you can get into 3:30. It's a great piece of editing.
I think people go for TTSS more than SP due to the plot-- TTSS's through-line is given from the start (find the mole) whereas in SP the goal (get Karla) is more abstract. The viewer isn't given all the pieces until two-thirds of the way through-- what a "legend" is, why Karla wants one, and where Kirov fits into the whole thing. Plus, TTSS's actors have some good heavyweights to go along w/ AG.
I love SP, this is why I think it wasn't as popular as TTSS.

Tinker Tailor...and Smiley's People are simply the best there is - books and the TV series.
Hollywood is taking a run at it again in 2011, but will likely screw it up.

Actually the 2011 version is completely funded by European movie, so the Europeans will likely screw it up. Hollywood has nothing to do with it.

I've watched this about 40 times, and as an old spy in a hurry, I have to say--you found a perfect marriage.

Many thanks for a fantastic evening. I happened upon your video by chance, and wouldn't have thought of watching it again if it hadn't been for you.
And tonight.... Mike Leigh's "Life is Sweet" is on TV !!

What a superbly brilliant vid
The one fact I cant grasp is why Toby has a completely different accent to his accent in Tinker Tailor,

@filtro6
Yeah, me too. I guess once he was sacked from the Circus, he gave up pretending to "English". Amazing change of wardrobe, too.

@filtro6 Toby, formerly a Hungarian punk, put on English airs throughout TTSS, and reverted to his real self in Smiley's People

I'm glad you chose Smiley's People. But rather than a silent collage of screengrabs with different music, why not download the superior original?

Respect to Patrick Stewart - he makes quite the impression with only 30 seconds or so of screen time.

Though I'm baffled as to what this actually is, I have to say it's startlingly good. One of the best things I've seen on youtube. Thanks much. x

Smiley's People is only one of the greatest shows ever made : D

Good job. I like it because your video shows one of the virtues of Smiley's people: is a choral work of wonderful actors.
