I find it hard to be too critic of Mark's growling... He's such an important part of the band (both in terms of playing and composition), and like it or not, his growling was part of what shaped Epica into what it is today.

I'll say that he's far from being my favorite growler, he certainly isn't the next Mikael Stanne, but I don't know... I don't mind him so much. It's part of the band's music since the beginning, and I like the band's music so I wouldn't have it any other way.

I feel like there are too many death metal elements in Epica to call it Gothic metal. Many other Gothic metal bands are waaaay softer. Epica is more with Nightwish, which is symphonic metal.

I know Mark isn't the best growler, but he's my favorite because he was the first one I listened to and actually was okay with. It drives my sib (big black metal fan) bonkers that I listen to a "cruddy" growler.

I don't mind the growlers. But Mark Jansen is not a good one, sorry. That growler from Old tristania and the growler from Eluvetie and the one from Dismal Euphony are good ones, which contrasted with the soprano vocals of these bands create an excellent result. But Mark...ehh....he's pathetic. Only he thinks he can growl.

I certainly hope Epica will use their money to invest in a live orchestra to record their next studio album. They could rival Nightwish's quality if they did. Composition was never their weakness, it was always the god awful synth sounds. This CD really opened my heart to Epica, this finally gave their skills justice. What I prefer from the original studio recording of this song, however, is the classical strings in the beginning.
