You can purchase the audio cable from Aircraft Spruce's website. Just search "cockpit recorder" and it will find it. I am sure there are others but this is what I used. For these flights I plugged the 1/8th inch cable into my video camera mic input which makes it much easier for editing than if I record into a pocket recorder...which of course will work as well, you just have to sync the audio and video. If you visit the link you will see a diagram of how the headset plugs into the cable. -SPJ
i was nervous for my check ride but the instructor was very nice he corrected my mistake the only one i did was forgetting to raise flaps after t/o but i still managed to pass
I think your video could be a life-lesson for aspiring pilots.
Every check-ride you will ever have will be like this. From your Private/Instrument/Commercial/Multi/Instructor/ATP.
EVERY check-ride you will have throughout your life will involve the same thing. A guy that's trying to TEACH you something. They are TEACHERS after-all, and theyTHRIVE on teaching you something new.
Act interested. As if you'd never heard of the concept before. You'll pass every time if you appear interested.
so the checkride is like a final test for your PPL? Im really interested in becoming a pilot and making it a career, it isn't that tough is it? I would just have to know how to read all the dials and everything in the dash...?? Is there a lot of math involved, if so what kind?
@ascitiesburn2001 It can be challenging at times but nothing you probably could not handle. A lot is just muscle memory and doing things over and over. With the PPL everything is so new so the learning curve is there and you have to get through that. As far as math goes...not advanced math. If you want to see most of the PPL process I documented most of it on my iTunes podcast. Just search Student Pilot Journal in iTunes and download them or go to beapilot.com.
@ascitiesburn2001 This is me in the video. Had I not released the brakes you would have seen that. I did forget to "hold" the brakes for the short field takeoff and you will hear my instructor correct me. If you look at the title this is prep for the checkride which was 2 months later. We skipped around in the training and worked on short/soft field towards the end of training. We did about 13 hours of prep. Most private pilots can agree that PPL is jam packed. It is a license to learn.
Good job. But a very important aspect of engine failure training, is that the FIRST step is to maintain Vg and check for a spot to land. After that, then start the checklist.
this looks just like me and my instructor. the dialog, the way the instructor talks. Of course my instructor and I get along well because we went to high school together. Its amazing my instructor is CFI/CFII/MEI/MEII and he's only 20... incredible
You guys are awesome! Getting ready to do my check ride, and while my instructor is great, hearing it a little different is quite helpful. Thanks for making this available (for free at that)
Nice video. I just took my second flying lesson 2 days ago it was fun! Did power on stalls, turns around a point, flying into the pattern I could have landed us but my instructor wanted to make the touchdown but we were already over the runway.
How do you record the video and sound(radio)? I would like to do the same for my solo and cross-country flights. VFR pilots for the WIN!
Yeah I did power on/off stalls ... not within practical test stands (+ or - 200 feet) the power on stalll has been more of a challenge for me, I seem to want to send the airplane into a spin..... LOL, teaching yourself spin recovery, even though u have gone over it it not fun.
Great instuctor!! Reminds me of mine, except my instructor likes to tell jokes when we are on final, So one day i asked him why does he tell me jokes when im trying to think about landing, and he said because it keeps my mind always going and when i take people flying there going to be asking questions as im trying to land.
Cool videos, you're really in the hot seat here you got a CFI and the rest of the world watching! Good flying, so many people wish they could do this and never do. You're instructor seems pretty cool too. I like instructors that are laid back, but you really need the ones that know when not to be. Some are thinking cheeseburger while they could be giving out pointers on manuevers. You gotta take a laid back instructor as a compliment though, if you sucked they wouldn't be laid back :)
Really cool for you to post this for those of us at the same stage! I hope my DPE is laid back! I always forget something here and there...but my CFI always tries to drill it into me. Sht & Soft Field are the last things he wants me to finish perfecting, then time for a mock ride with another CFI.
Any advice for those at this progress point? I'm sweatin' my upcoming checkride!
For me...I'm worried about consistency... some days I'm spot on, others...well you know.
Like they say...just fly the plane. Easy for me to say now that I am past the checkride. I was nervous too, but I ended up flying better than I have ever flown. Get a lot of sleep if you can. :-)
I consider myself lucky....some people say it is a good thing to have an uptight instructor, but if it is not embedding good habits, then maybe it is time switch instructors, although sometimes you don't know if the training sticks until you get in a situation and you react appropriately. :-)
Well, first off,I am the pilot in this video, and your comments don't really add any constructive criticism, and by the way they call it prep for a reason. On takeoff, you are correct in that I would not have passed it,as the instructor pointed out.Again this is why they call it PREP.If you cannot point out specifics, then please just comment politely. This is one of the reasons I am hesitant to put material up.This is a JOURNAL of what I went through, not meant for training.
this is a great training video for what a beginner goes through....however not to be judgmental but if this is a check ride prep.....i would run as far away from this student pilot as i could, he did just about every maneuver wrong and "failed the check ride" on the first takeoff.
ran out of characters. I passed the checkride 1 month later so I guess the DPE was not concerned with "running as far away".You should think before you comment. You may not mean anything by it, but your comment was extremely unfair and you make no effort to think how much time and effort it takes into documenting every lesson on video and laying it out for all to see as I did, in addition to training alone. Where are your training videos? Were you Joe Pilot on day 1 of your checkride prep?

I know what you mean with those crosswinds from the right. Super fun coming in for the landing, but it really takes all focus. :) Good stuff!
