Damn that mother fucking father he only cares about food he is dumb! He doesn't know either way she will die! The mother was amazing and seeing the poor awesome children get stuck with that ass I just wanna kill him but the food looked really good
The guy is a fucckking idiot and no wonder why she dies she hates him he is freaking selfish but I'm really sad because she died and the kids need a mom also she seemed really nice
It is supposed to be a parody on Japanese domestic life - it is exaggerating the ability women in Japanese society to rustle up a dinner no matter how awful they feel - indeed even if they are on deaths door! And also making a satirical point about the perceptions of women's prime function and purpose in life as homemaker, wife and mother - as someone who lives and works for others rather than attend to their own needs. I don't find it bizarre or touching. It is black comedy! It is funny.
after reading a number of interpretations of scenes from tampopo i have noticed something. like all good forms of art and such the meaning is vauge. this allows the viewer to interpret in a way that has meaning for them. if you are old fashioned you see this as a symbol of devotion... if you are more feminist inclined you see it as a satire of how women can be slaves to their families. neither one is really more right, just more right for the person watching... just my two bits though
This scene has always touched me... and provokes thoughts about the deep forces that keep us going, keep us struggling through life. Family is a very powerful thing, and our duties toward family are equally compelling. On a side note, I wonder if any of the children developed eating disorders... lmao.

@scottrekishika Hence the complexity of this movie despite it apparent simplicity. There are several interpretations in every scenes.

What a devoted wife. She worked as a drudge for her family to the very end. A woman like that is hard to find, nowadays.
