This is a great version and great playing. But are you sure that is the Ventures?
Strange I have never heard them play this version before. This is quite alot different than their first cut on their earlier album. I. It is definitely not on this album cover. If it is them it must be on a later record with different guitars and people playing
One of the first songs I learned in my early teens. I played bass in a 4-man band and the 19+ year old lead guitarist could play every Ventures song perfectly. He heard 3 of us playing in my basement one summer and joined us. He played this song with his Fender Telecaster and did slide guitar using the microphone stand. He sometimes played guitar behind his back and with his teeth ... like Jimmy Hendrix long before anyone knew who he was. After that summer he left and we never saw him again.
The Ventures turned out a large number of records in the '60's. On many of them there were covers of popular tunes done instrumentaly on manyof these the Ventures did not actually play and they were not part of their performance repetoire. Its no different today. There were also usually a few tracks in which the Ventures jammed on some theme in the studio..
Who played the lap steel here? This is dreamy and wonderful. I know lap steel was used for effects, particularly in the Ventures in Space LP, but it was played by a studio player they knew.
This version of 'Sleep Walk' is one of my all-time favorites. I've not heard any other versions, even the original, which compares as favorable. However, their later released version using the electric steel guitar is very good also.
@mikelson1988 Hey, thought you may want to hear this again! Isn't it just the best ever? It's like drinking to shots on the still water beaches of Hawaii.
Is there any "Ventures" CD that has this longer version of this song? All I have is the original version-on one of their "Greatest Hits'' album. Which is also good, mind you. I absolutely love this longer, more blues-type version, as well, and wish I could find it somewhere on ''hard copy''......
Oh boy - the Ventures take me back to the old days when my dad would crank up the stereo and play all of this great music - Ventures, Herb Alpert, Al Caiola.........and for comic relief, Godfrey Cambridge, Bill Cosby and Brother Dave Gardner!!
the original artists seem to give the listener the the warm and fuzzies better than "Copy Cats" or those new bands of today, in their glorious lack of originality . Could be the the joint i just smoked. Nah, new bands pretty much just lack talent. Go Ventures!
@davidtaylor19797 I like how you're criticizing "Copy Cats" and celebrating "original artists" when, in fact, this is a cover. The original artists are Santo and Johnny. (don't get me wrong, though - this is an awesome rendition)
@panatela001 Yes I believe you're right. I have found the exact same soundtrack on youtube credited to Hapa, and the other Ventures versions sound different.
@mcdonchris - This is actually a group called 'Hapa' performing this. But no matter who it is, it certainly is beautiful. I hate to say this, but I think I like it better than the original by Santo and Johnny!
