We Filipinos don't need to copy, as each of our respective arts evolved differently, we had fought different adversaries in our region, therefore Filipino arts were focused on different situations compared to the Chinese arts who also had their distinct moves focused on the situations they encountered in the battlefield; If there are similarities between different Asian arts, that is because Asian kingdoms/countries have traded with each other even before the west meddled with the Asian region.
one example would be Pacquiao; there are already people who say that Manny is copying Bruce Lees foot work but in fact it is Bruce who learned a couple of tricks from Pinoy FMA masters back then, Bruce Foot work I've heard is influenced by the Dance CHACHA which is really popular here in the Philippines back then, I've seen an Escrimador master from Cebu saying that Bruce paterned his foot work from CHACHA dance ( in a youtube video)
@banyohazard69 i don't doubt the credit that bruce learned from pinoy martial arts but this footwork tht i have seen is very similar to northern chinese swordsman techniques
@cfG21 In my post I said that Bruce's footwork was influenced by Chacha in a way, with the in and out movement he does, which is also visible in Cha 2x; Bruce indeed learned from Filipino martial arts masters, but yes he resembles the Chinese warriors more, I never claimed otherwise. But what I'm trying to point out here is about Filipino accomplishments not given due credit. When Lee fan boys say that Manny is copying Lees F.work, it disrespecting, 'coz we Filipinos have our own fighting style.
@banyohazard69 What people don't understand is that both fighting and dancing are about effortless, fluid movement. Both require timing, balance and body mechanic sensativity. You flow with your partner from one sequence to another. Some of the best masters out there were also accomplished dancers.
to knifekali, so please STFU and stop rewriting my peoples history through your silly comments, do some more research from a wide variety of resource material other than wikipedia.
to knifekali, yes some filipinos have black blood in them because of the negritos but majority of the filipinos are of malay and indones decent, and kaliarnisescrima in the visayas didn't come from negritos theres no concrete evidence to prove it, I should know because my family comes from the visayas region, I'm a proud bisaya myself.
Sorry pare it's more than 9 years since I went back to Visayas hence I can only speak a little of waray na lang but I can still understand it whenever I hear someone talk bisaya. I'm already here in Manila though.
but Filipinos accomplishments always gets underappreciated or worse credit is given to other people instead of giving the credit where credit is due which is to the Filipino.
to knifekali, you don't even know what your saying, moro's are not black people, it's a name used by spaniards to label filipino muslims in mindanao (southern part of the philippines) they are more of malay and indones decent.
Those who really got 'time' with Sonny were allowed special passage into his world. His students are now the eskrimadors' legacy. I wish I met him personally.
If you look up Negros Oriental on wikipedia, you will find a picture link under mindanao and click negrito. It's true the negrito, is where Kali came from in the Visayans. Look up Moro's and you find they are blacks from Africa. Han Chinese, Main articles: Xia Dynasty, Shang Dynasty, and Zhou Dynasty, which Bruce Lee came from are descendants from same lineage.

I love the comments of his "Hustle" or disco dancing, I was probably there when the still photo of him wearing the white clothing was taken. I can't believe he's gone.
Man, this has got to be one of the best documentaries of Eskrima, starring one of the SF Bay Area's finest yet most reclusive experts. The world is poorer without Master Umpad.
A good dancer is always a good fighter!! interesting when muhammed ali 1st became famous he went to the filipines and he learned his dancing footwork from the great eddie the flash florro a great eskirma man!! rip to this great master great clip any1 got it to trade??
Unfortuntely, I came to here of Master Sonny Umpad only after he had passed away. I sincerely hope that his art and memory is cherished for many years too come.
Rest in Peace Sonny - the man who became a legend in his own time! Dakong garbo ka namo gikan sa imong mga silingan diri sa Sugbu ug sa lungsod sa Bogo.
Man when he lights that cigarette, and just LOOKS...chills.
