@fork1964 - it is a double set trigger. Once hammer is cocked, squeezing the rear trigger "sets" the front trigger. The front trigger is very light, maybe 1/4-1/2 pound. Or you can simply cock the hammer and only use the front trigger, but without setting the rear trigger, the front trigger would have about a 5lb pull.
@shadysideguy123 - It is a good affordable first kit. I would recommend it. Much better than buying a high end kit with no experience and screwing up. It shoots great and I love the double set trigger. However if you have a few muzzleloader kits under your belt, I would recommend something a bit higher quality.
Saying that you're a left handed only because you are holding the rifle at your left side seems to be a bit light. Normaly when you're right handed, your right arm is usually stronger so holding the rifle with that hand seems to be more appropriate and precise. So I would say you're right handed because you wear it on your left side, like me. I shoot rifles on my left side, but pistols with my right hand, I do everytime my right hand to have the most difficult situations. BTW nice gun ;)
Thanks. I'm left handed, and left eye dominate. I shoot pistol left handed, and pretty much everything else in life left handed. I can barley use a spoon with my right hand, lol.
@rcbif101 So you're a real left handed. I am only left handed for shooting rifles (i'm more precise) my dominating eye is the left, but when shooting pistols or playing billiards, I'm right handed and when I have to pick up straw, I hold the fork on my left side, because my right arm is the most strength. ;)
i bouught a 50 cal hawken for 70,00 and its my favrote rifle it is un beliveble how dead on it is i lernd a very good tip from my grand father about any black powder is no no no oil it dirtys the rifle fast use bore butter i cotted the barrel with it and use it on my patches and it will keep it clean you wont have to clean it every few shots this is so great stuff happy hunting
Great effort. I have a similar rifle and enjoy using it, but boy, it sure is very time consuming to prepare to use it, and then to clean it up and put it all away.
I use about 90 with 240 grain Hornady Plains Conicals in my CVA Hawken, Pyrodex powder for farting around and pellets for speed loaders when hunting. dead nuts at 100 yards. Nice gun good job :)
really? thats it? i wouldnt use anything less than 90 grains. i use around 105. that gives me a close group at up to 200 yards. i wouldnt use anything less for hunting either.
Are you using Black or a substitute? I use 75 gr black for good 50 yards shot myself. My friend shoots about the same as me and puts round balls all the way through deer. I did try american pioneer once and to get a similar shot at 50 I had to boost it to 115gr.
i use black, fff. hawkens are rated for up to 120 grains. i dont shoot round balls though either. i use 350 grain hollow points. but 50 grains fo black is only going to push a round ball around 1000 fps, slower than a 22 lr
Scoped? Farthest I've shot irons has been 100 w/75 ffg and round balls. Eh to each his own, its whatever we are comfortable with as to make a clean kill, is what matters. that and getting out using bp, :)
nope, not scoped. yes i agree, but around here you cant get that close to anything. my dad has killed many with that same muzzleloader out past 200 yards.
what load were u shooting? how much powder/ bullet type/size

Why does it have two triggers?

How long did this kit take you to complete?
shadysideguy123 8 months ago
@shadysideguy123 - Sure was a while ago. I'd guess 20-30 hours over a period of a month or two.

Nice video. I need to get a rifle kit soon.
Do you know if a CVA kit is any good in terms of quality?
HunterTom3006 1 year ago
@HunterTom3006 I'm not sure about cva's quality compared to traditions. Checks out the muzzle loading forums
rcbif101 1 year ago
@rcbif101
I had a CVA hawken 50 and it wasnt the best quality,
kinda cheap shiny stock, and shorter than original barrell for a hawken,
and brass furniture that a hawken's didnt have,

wow great shooting wat load are you using
097421 1 year ago
@097421 Thanks. I dont even remember what I used that day. I'm guessing somewhere around 60 ffg or so. I usually use 70 with a round ball.

I noticed you are a southpaw. Any problems with the lock on the rifle? Beautiful job on the smokepole, BTW..
radarbrew 2 years ago
nope, no problems. just the occasional annoying hot flake of powder on my hand if I'm not wearing long sleeves.

Alright thats some good group u have there. I like the HAWKEN 50 cal rifle & I'm going to buy another rifle very soon.
HunterTom3006 2 years ago
Yep, If I got another bp rifle, I'd probably get a Pennsylvania long rifle.
rcbif101 2 years ago
yes that is a very butiful gun and the 50 inch barrel makes it real accurate
aerodynamicband 2 years ago
Thats a prety COOL gun range u have there. I can only shoot around 30 yards in the backyard.
HunterTom3006 2 years ago
i use 375 buffalo bullet(no patch bullet) and 120gr powder in my t/c hawkins.

also, 50 yards is ridiculously close. i dont practice from any closer than 125 yards.
