but even still, after all that, it really depends upon the piece. some works lend themselves to a more formal approach while others not so. although some may be improved by rubbing dirt into them, and some by cleaning them up, to state *all art* as needing to be one way or the other simply is limiting. the ideas need to allow themselves to speak, and determine what approach is most important.

but i believe you've stated that already, so i will stop rambling. thanks for posting. it was fun.

i think that debating the merits of formalism vs. (pardon this ridiculous term) non-formalism, while may make for an engaging discussion, is ultimately futile. while there are excellent works of art in both camps, those which succeed most as works of art are those which are able to best incorporate both ideologies. it's very easy to hammer away at someone with your ideas, and even to evoke an emotional response, but without some knowledge, you may as well be a monkey flinging poo at a canvas.
