Al Capp was such a condescending douche bag that it's hard to to relate this to his life as a cartoonist. He went in to pick a fight and didn't make a single salient point. If his comic strip reflected the man we see here it would have folded in a week. So, the question has to be what was the point of Al Capp's visit? Did anyone else notice how his behavior was like that of Limbaugh and O'Reilly when they're confronted with the fruits of their efforts to piss people off? Back-peddling idiots.
This clip could better be titled "Archie Bunker vs. Meathead and Little Goil." Capp's maturity and experience is the irrresistible force meeting the immovable object that is the Lennons' youthful idealism. All three are professional showpeople and dutifully delivered a fun piece of performance art.
I think John and Yoko were in full-on kook mode at this point in their life, but even I think that John got the better of Capp in this exchange. Lennon kept his cool and sounded a lot more logical. Capp started off okay, but then became belligerent and ranting making John sound like he was the sane one. I did enjoy the digs at Ugly Yoko, though.
@ashman1960 Of course I'm a dick, but Yoko's a bitch on wheels. Always nice to see someone mess with her, even a complete A.H. like Capp. In that, at least, Capp was right. Regardless of what was wrong with him, at least he did not have to live with Yoko like John did.
I can't believe Timothy Leary had the nerve to shake that asshole Capp's hand at the end of this clip..if this had taken place a few years earlier John probably would have taken a few swings at Capp just like when he punched Bob Wooler at Paul's 21st B-day party..he he
Just finished reading Frank Millers rant about occupy wall-street. Been a big fan of Miller since I was young. I don't know what happened to him but he has become Occupy wall-streets Al Capp. So sad.
I have seen this encounter many times and realised that it was deliberately engineered so that a conflict would happen, probably appealed to Capp and Lennon's subversive sense of humour and so much more interesting to watch than people just agreeing with the Lenonos about how worthy they are. This was a really good PR stunt, got you all talking about it 40 years later.

Lennon shows himself here as a complete hypocrite. He's such an advocate for peace, yet he conducts himself poorly in the matter of a few minutes. Look at his face-he clearly isn't peaceful-he seems pissed pretty pissed off and wanting to kick some ass! Lennon, easily provoked by a cartoonist. Wasn't John a cartoonist? Drawing pictures of cripples? Al Capp got the best of John Lennon here. Lennon would have been seventy-one today? JT8800 in Boston
I'm a big lennon fan but .... sigh, he was just asking to be slapped in the back of his head with a wet fish for this stupid gimmick. I don't doubt lennons sincerity but it's clear that when Al walked out, he walked out feeling like he'd accomplished what he'd intended : make these aspiring icons of peace lose their peace of mind and turn red with anger. So John kinda fucked himself over. Al played lennon well.
@xtrmsprts Al Capp walked in totally trolling with insults. You expect that responding to insults and distortions of their character and message is somehow Lennon and Yoko playing into Capp's hands? John handled that a lot cooler than I would've.
@L0un9ePunk I don't know why you use the verb trolling when capp was raising legitimate concerns and taking what he saw as tomfoolery to task.Yes, he was sarcastic and biting but that's great as it stress-tests the equanimity of the subject. the lennons failed that test by losing it completely infront of the world. All the mystique and romanticization aside, this was a farce. Love how monty python parodies this with the shower sit-in protest in the rutles movie : "we're getting wet for peace"LOL
He walked in looking to ridicule , not to understand or respect them. It seems that you are invested in seeing this as Lennon looking stupid and Capp somehow revealing Lennon as a sham, when in truth he never called Capp out of name nor did he ever insult him. Capp walked in full of nasty insults and ended the conversation with a racist comment toward Yoko "Madame Nhu" wtf? Any man would be within rights to pop Capp in the jaw on that alone. Where have John & Yoko "lost it"?
@L0un9ePunk Capp had made up his mind about what this bed-in was about & he gave them no quarter. Anyway, i think it was good to mix some rancor in with the nauseating unction that the rest of the press were giving the lennons. Some of his stuff was unnecessarily meant to provoke but life is like that. He wanted to see if these two were genuinely peaceful or if their veneer could be broken by some nastiness. And it worked. I love lennon's music but he was no MLK or Gandhi and it's obvious here
my point is that you don't have to be Ghandi to think the war in Vietnam or all wars were bad. In retrospect, Capp is on his ass, because we lost the war in Vietnam and history looks on our involvement in that war as a massive mistake. I'm definitey not Ghandi or MLK and if you insult me , you may get a rise out me depending upon my mood at the time. Big victory for who? He proved them to be human. John & Yoko
@L0un9ePunk It's plain here and you should chide yourself for not seeing it, that they put themselves out here as icons of peace, implicitly or explicitly, and capp with a clever use of nastiness showed they can lose their own peace very easily. If it's all too complicated for you think of it this way : It's like a PETA activist who is campaigning outside KFC... while enjoying a Big Mac. Hope that clears your confusion, friend.
@xtrmsprts ahhh. i see what you did there. you think that being capable of anger or violence discredits anyone who desires peace. Besides, John defended his talking points without insulting anyone and if raising his voice a little and exhibiting frustration with a obvious troll makes him a a total hypocrite in your eyes then maybe you should consider chiding yourself for such a cemented mindest.
@L0un9ePunk No, because like I said we are not holding capp and the lennons to the same standard of conduct because they have chosen different roles for themselves - lennons the self-appointed voices of peace & capp as the no-nonsense critic. I admire Capp for entering the lion's lair and taking the lennons to task. That's not trolling, that's argumentation, critical thought, penetrating an issue. We need more of that than mute acceptance of whatever celebrities say. You're just starstruck, brotha
@xtrmsprts How did you see that as John and Yoko "losing it completely"? They completely held themselves in a dignified manner, while he acted like a close minded, blinkered bully. An unerringly arrogant attitude, unwilling to listen... oh and a racist dig to boot. A complete humiliation for Capp.
@Nathan2all97 Yes, yes, You have me figured out, everything I know about politics & music.
Bottom line is, Lennon was honestly a liberal by creativity, personality, personal history, music, art, poetry & politics. I know that from his writings, interviews, music & his wife. Very clear. I remember Al Capp as a complete dick, this video doesn't change that impression.
Trying to say John Lennon had become a conservative is an appropriation of a historical figure. I wonder what the motive is?
Hey, there's Tim Leary at 8:43. Unlike Al Capp, he enjoyed his stay over at John and Yoko's pad. Al Capp was invited? Both seem to agree. Two conflicting points of view. I have to remember that there was a war going on at home too.
@hznfrst ....wow did you come up with all of that by yourself? impressive. i have a question for you....why did the beatles leave england? do you have a clue?....the beatles left england because of the socialist government and the fact the beatles were taxed 96% of their earnings....so yes john lennon wouldve been a "teabuggerer" or whatever you want to call true americans.
now you keep drinking the koolaide and sniffing barracks shits stained panties and be a good little troll.
@flwhrtrb90 Eeeew your name calling is impressive, but your logic is quite flawed. Not liking taxes is NOT synonymous with being a tea baggist. That is so simplistic as to be funny. But that is what I would expect.
And TRUE Americans aren't bitching about paying taxes. You live here with all the benefits, you have to pay for the privilege.
ive argued that i felt lennon had become a conservative based on a few things. i think lennon realized he had been used by the left and probably had some bitter thoughts towards that. i did see lennon and ronald reagan on monday night football together so i imagine they probably had a little debate or conversation when the mics were turned off.
if i find out anything more about what his personal assistant is claiming ill be back to post the website.
@flwhrtrb90 What a load of codswallop. Do you live in some kind of fantasy land? Do UFO/Aliens control the government? Is the earth flat?
He was a leftist is just about -every- point of his philosophy, He would just as likely to wake up one day and decide to go shoot Mark Chapman. The only 'using' going on here is some delusional neocon trying to appropriate a famous rock star. How weak.
heard something on the news today about lennons p.a. stating lennon had become a conservative in his last years of life. his p.a. claims lennon told him he was embarassed by some of the antics he pulled in his youth, p.a. also claims lennon admired ronald reagan, and p.a. claimed lennon liked to argue with radical leftist, and p.a. claimed lennon told him he was also embarassed by how naive he was......dont know if its a book coming out or a story about lennon in some newspaper. just heard it.
Al Carp wanted a hug. John and Yoko too. I wish they could have all given that hug to each other. At least they tried to be together, that's a good sign!
I feel like Capp was drunk when he entered the room. He sounds like he's slurring his words but of course, I could be wrong. It's just that some people get antagonistic when they drink and just try to eff with people because the demon comes out.
Notice how he keeps trying to prolong the conflict, just putting out insults to try and get Lennon to bite. He knows he's not 1/100th as relevant as Lennon and so this is the most relevant moment of his life for a long time (ever)? His desperation shows. Even after he stands up, he tries a few more times. It's very easy to imagine him feeling miserable as soon as he steps outside the room, knowing what a sick, sad man he is.
Also, interesting to see how useless Derek Taylor is
I disagree with one thing you said----Al Capp very much WAS relevant at the time. He was one of the most famous and visible people in the country. It's just that Lennon's legacy remains in the general public consciousness today where Capp's is fading. It really is incredible how that happens. Capp was as huge as huge could be, back in the day.
Lennon was a cunt did you ever notice how money hungry Yoko i mean mother was Lennon leader of the wimpy househusband hippies oh mccartney was baking bread too
Face the facts, o ye who think that Lennon was good to the nth: he was a flawed human being who made good songs & tried to push the boundaries. Capp was a flawed human being who made good cartoons & who also pushed the boundaries. Neither of them look or sound like they would be particularly good men in their private lives.
I love the way that american governments brainwashed half of America into being subliminal War mongers thinking that fighting and killing is needed for peace when it's quite obvious. It's Love that we need. Instead the governments all over the world poison us with fear.
@Nathan2all97 Well in the situation that they were trying to conduct this "reasonable conversation" in, what do you expect will be brought up by Lennon?
I think he conducted himself quite well, especially since this dumb fuck began attacking them as soon as he stepped in the door.
His talent is a matter of opinion. But I can tell you he was a better man than this right wing asshole ever was.
Capp was a racist, pig, who worshiped god, war's,and himself, the 70s was full of people like this.John and Yoko were the odd one's out, thank goodness he stood up for what he believed in,and the world began to change,to insult a man's wife because you cannot win the arguement is how rude this piece of shit was...
"Ngo Dinh Nhu was essentially a Fascist, being an open admirer of Hitler .... He and Madame Nhu influenced the rule of Ngo Dinh Diem as they saw fit. Madam Nhu was a ruthless, cruel manipulator, with little or no regard for the feelings or wishes of the populace" Lennon contained himself well. And he was right about the war. Even McNamara admitted in his last book he knew the war was unwinnable by 1965. From the French re-colonialisation, To Tonkin Gulf, to the Cambodian bombing: A SHAM
J & Y knew full well they were opening themselves up for ridicule by the conservative media and right-winged celebrities like Capp. To say Capp "wins" is to agree with his assertion that the Lennons were doing this for money (absurd), and that John was ridiculous in aligning himself with Christ's persecution (alas Lennon was too right on the mark about that). Capp was a clever, talented man but also a pig. Hi remarks to and about Yoko were particularly odious.
Capp was being an ass. But Lennon let Capp get under his skin. Lennon had, by this time, swallowed Yoko's "John as Peace Prince" bullsh*t. If Capp had confronted him during his Beatles prime (1965-67), Lennon would've shredded Capp verbally.
@sneezepal Lennon's personal life was chaotic, frequently dominated by drugs between the mid-1960s and -70s. He was NO philosopher, much less an intellectual, despite his early-Yoko-era pronouncements. His worldview remained naive at best. Thankfully, Lennon matured in the late 70s. He then returned to the field in which he belonged: his MUSIC. The man wasn't a deep thinker, dammit; he was an ARTIST. "Double Fantasy" contains some of Lennon's finest work --
@stevevandien How the hell can you say that! Double Fantasy was the work of an artist who has spent the last five years of his life escaping from his craft and is merely trying to get back into it. I would say that the album is weaker than the Mind Games LP!
@sneezepal Naw I dont think so....Lennon couldnt Shred Capp. Lennon just ran into someone who was more clever than himself, and he knew it. No shame in that
@bluegrassreb1 al crapp did shit other than make a fool out of himself..he wanted trouble lucky for capptoon al that i wasnt there i would have followed him to his shitbox car and beat him over the head with a crowbar til dead!
John - 8:00 " You Have Manners?!" .......What "Guest" would ever insult and have attitude like Al Capp.....completely disrespectful to John and Yoko. John made Capp look like a complete jerk.
1west72ndstreet Beating up an older conservative guy with a wooden leg would hardly have solved the problem.
I don't agree with Capp. But Lennon and Ono were doing a sort of "performance" in order to shock people to look at things differently. And they were using media publicity, which cuts both ways.
Capp's hostility partly generational, he was clearly annoyed by "free-love hippies." Lennon and Ono should have also expected enemies as well as friends and delt with him accordingly.
Capp chides Lennon for not doing much to stop the violence in Berekely (students throwing rocks at police), and Lennon's retort is, "What are *you* doing?"
Capp criticizes Lennon and Ono, saying that they don't seem to have much peace themselves. Capp adamantly, but calmly, insists that Lennon does not represent him, a point Lennon appears to either miss, dismiss, or obstinately deny.
It's interesting, although the CBC interview is almost 10min, in the "John Lennon Fight with Al Capp" posted by lafiesta33 (just click on the right) there's an exchange edited out of the CBC interview. At around 1:55, Yoko Ono makes a sort of statement about she being "married" to Capp (an inclusive statement) and Capp's reply is quite nasty, hostile actually. Lennon looks clearly angered by this. It's a shame. Capp was a great cartoonist. Here he looks like a smart alec bore.
@geinikan1kan first of all John Lennon did not start it..the cartoon asshole Capp started it from the start...look closely at Capp he even looks like a JERK that was there just to start trouble...i wish Timothy Leary had said something to Al Crapp as he was on the way out, but Leary had "no balls" & shook hands with Capp so FUCK LEARY& CAPP
Trust me...if i had been there i would have followed Al Crapp out into the hallway & put him up against the wall & told him to get back in there & apologize
@williwo (dont you know anything?) the guy (capp) is an all-time jerk...he came in looking for toruble AND had i been there i would beat the dog-capp out of the jerk-off!
@1west72ndstreet Well why would you beat the crap out of him? I thought John Lennon was for peace. Also, John Lennon came off as a jerk himself alot....lets be honest. He abused his first wife and neglected his first son. Capp is not viewed as an All-time Jerk. He's regarded very highly as a Cartoonist, and had a Fun sense of humor. Sure he COULD be a jerk.....but who Isnt sometimes? The guy had a Wooden leg...gimme a break. He was not that bad
@williwo i thought we were talking about al crap & john & yoko...listen the guy crapp is an asshole...we all know john can be brutal, but loving...al crapp came in looking for trouble and that is why i would have thrown him off the 10th balcony of that room. watch it again ALL OF IT al capp came in an asshole and left a bigger one!
@1west72ndstreet He was an asshole just because he won?? Capp, like Lennon, was a Sarcastic person. You only call him an asshole cuz you like Lennon.......but u refuse to Admit how big of a Jerkwad Lennon was a lot of the time. Double Standard. And By throwing Capp off of a Balcony you would be a Traitor to the "Peace" movement. Sorry But Capp was only playing Lennon's OWN game. If Lennon can give it out....he should be able to take it. And Capp took it to him
@williwo they were open to it, they invited him there, he was being ridiculous, it was became pointless to have him there, he left. they have to ask all press and the like to leave eventually its no big deal.
@5556665012008 He was being no more ridiculous than Lennon......this is coming from a guy who is a fan of Lennon's songwriting. Capp was merely being sarcastic......something Lennon did quite often. I like Lennon, but hes a human being......not a Flawless God. He could be wrong about things like any other person. Capp was just extremely clever here, thats all. He was obviously just having fun with the whole damn thing.
What a compleate Wanker!!...How disrespectful he was to them, fine have a diffrerent opinion but the way he speaks to them is vile! Hes goading them all the time!!!!! U can tell John is getting well pissed off with him.... John Lennon is a Legend forever!! I'm proud to be from the Northwest England..we are the people with hearts!!
This interview with John & Yoko put this previously unknown clown on the map, and he should be grateful to them. This short interview is the one thing in his miserable life that he's most "famous" for, and he only showed himself to be an ignorant, racist jerk.
The only other thing anyone knows about Capp is that he was a "has-been" cartoonist who once drew a relatively unpopular comic strip decades ago.
I really hate to say it, but this Al Capp guy was actually kind of funny. He reminded me a lot of Stephen Colbert when doing an interview; only this guy actually means the things he says.
@doubleugly889 No he didn't, the opposite in fact. The BEATLES ARE BIGGER THAN JESUS!, OR GOD AS A THING...OR WHATEVER!!!. Al Capp sucked wind, just like most of his narrow minded generation, and all the Republicans of America today! :)
@Utubetrekk Who says republicans are the only ones who are Narrow Minded?? If you're so open-minded, then how come people like you are trying to shut down Talk radio and limit free speech for those who disagree with you. Sounds like a double standard
@williwo huh? that is silly! I love talk shows on the radio you have me confused with others, besides I am from Monaco and do not listen to much American radio but yet I encourage it!
Williwo? as I am a sweet young female filled with hope for a better world, join with me in hopes!!! :)
@Utubetrekk There are many on the Left who are trying to shut down Conservative talk radio. Believe me, its true. Look it up yourself if you dont believe me. I do join with you in those hopes, I really do. And I'm sure you're a sweet young female. But whether those hopes are in vain...I dont know. We've been trying for thousands of years to achieve a "Better" world. And we always disappoint ourselves in the end. I cant remember, where is Monaco?
@williwo The south of France, it is a semi-independent French Monarchy on the Mediterranean , You have never heard of the famous Princess Grace of Monaco? She was originally from America and was a very lovely woman who married her Prince Charming here, years have gone by and now both are now in Heaven. Their children now rule the Monarchy.
NO he isn't. He spoke for many people that felt it was nothing more than a cheap publicity stunt to further the Lennon-Yucko Corporation!!! I don't know if you were alive back then, well I was, and 99.9% of the folks at that time felt that it was a shameless publicity stunt feeding upon the tension and anger over the Vietnam War. These two were marketing themselves and their products on the backs of those who had suffered for their beliefs whether for or against the war.
@doubleugly889 I respectfully disagree. A person who laughs in your face, drops an arrogance bomb like "I can see why you want peace, god knows you can't have much" and then says, "I am sorry for you," is practicing typical troll behavior, baiting for an emotional response. Perhaps he's right that their stunt was useless and disrespectful, but his swagger and condescending tone masks any honest, academic point to be made, and he will always come off as a pinched-up troll. To me.
I'm not surprised Lennon got upset. Capp was being a jerk for attacking Yoko Ono the way he did by telling John "I can see why you want peace, god knows you can't have much..." and then telling John "I feel sorry for you". What an arrogant sexist jerk!! Yoko meant everything to John and Capp's disrespect for Yoko obviously pissed John off. That personal attack completely uncalled for it also showed Capp for the sexist pig he was (look at how Capp portrayed women in Lil Abner for confirmation)
Wow, this guy is a deeply sick individual. Dead inside. Can't even begin to understand what John Lennon is about. His discomfort and desperate need to make some kind of point is painfully evident, just listen to the affectation of the voice. All ego.
John gave up his life- both all the comforts of life and his life itself for the sake of peace- John promoted peace, fought the government who tried to deport him, tried to teach ignorant people like Cappo here, and every post Beatles he did he did for free as protest or charity.-John did more for peace than all the others who talked about it yet didnt do anything or attacked protestors. John truly had his heart in it -he could have easily lived a luxurious quiet life- but didn't
to evangelosism, as CRAZY as John and Yoko sound to us all these days, back then it was a genuine stance to take. John really did oppose the Vietnam War, and his crusade for peace WAS NOT for money, nor attention. He was genuine. John Lennon is an ENORMOUS character study. He's getting riled up in this video because Al Capp is mocking them. However, John Lennon feels no CONVICTION from this mockery.
I've blocked and deleted evangelosism. He's a religious nut from England who can only spew hatred at Lennon for being anti-religion. Funny how being a Christian makes you a loony-tune sometimes (or most of the time). Lennon was right about that.
The man entered the room with Lennons penis and world war 2[Japan] on his mind no intention of understanding Lennon just an intent of deriding .The goof should have taken some lumps!!!
I think Frank Zappa was jealous of the success to some extent, "All You Need is Love" is poetry and is obviously not meant to be taken literally.. John Lennon said it was "peace propaganda" to put the idea of peace into more people's minds.
It's a little surprising to see him like this actually.
Usually we think of Lennon as the acid-tongued Englishman who could never be taken down by authority. In this interview, John looks a little freaked out, unsettled, and uncomfortable. Interesting POV, interesting thing to watch.
Obviously he's holding back because he's advertising "peace" and doesn't want a vicious vulgar argument to be in the newspapers instead... That would be contradictory and he would look like an idiot.
Many people comment "who is Al Capp?" and say they'd like to beat on him and it is sad. Capp was one of our greatest cartoonists and satirists and at this point of his life was in serious decline. I came looking for a video of this after reading about Capp and I just cannot watch him making of a fool out of himself.
What all of these blowhards, whether Capp or Gloria Emerson, didn't realize until they met him, was that Lennon was a highly intelligent, well-read, thoughtful man. They expected an ignorant, uneducated rocker and became extremely defensive and, as a result, insulting when they realized they couldn't just railroad him and make him look like a fool. They're the ones who ended up looking foolish.
@hmaren Actually no....they knew he was witty. And Capp clearly got the better end of this. He was a very witty and humorous man, and this shows it. Lennon knew he wasnt dealing with just another naive reporter.
.also for capp to say this whole thing was just for money pathetic...bottom line is capp had bad intentions from the start while john's intentions with the bed-in are heroic...capp's one liner's are also just weak..."the other 3 are english"???....not funny....
Capp's a joke. he didn't win 1 argument...any time he is questioned he answers it with a joke or changes subjects. He didn't listen to any retorts either, instead loudly talking john and yoko...he also contradicts himself...ie..."i think everybody owes it to the world to prove they got pubic hair"...then when he is called out on it he says..."i don't feel there's any great interest in it...".....hey capp, you can't have it both ways..
you daft cunts capp the wanker is tring to make lennon attack him ITS A PEACE PROTEST he is tryna make lennon mad by didding him and yoko .Lennon wants to tear his fuckin head off but how could he do that IN A PEACE PROTEST al is a dead moron i hate the loser how dare he draw art for me he dont represent me stick your art up your dead mums arse al capp
Al Capp was such a condescending douche bag that it's hard to to relate this to his life as a cartoonist. He went in to pick a fight and didn't make a single salient point.

@56conn6h Agreed.
L0un9ePunk 3 months ago
@L0un9ePunk I don't know why you use the verb trolling when capp was raising legitimate concerns and taking what he saw as tomfoolery to task.Yes, he was sarcastic and biting but that's great as it stress-tests the equanimity of the subject. the lennons failed that test by losing it completely infront of the world. All the mystique and romanticization aside, this was a farce. Love how monty python parodies this with the shower sit-in protest in the rutles movie : "we're getting wet for peace"LOL
xtrmsprts 3 months ago
@xtrmsprts
L0un9ePunk 3 months ago 11
@L0un9ePunk Capp had made up his mind about what this bed-in was about & he gave them no quarter. Anyway, i think it was good to mix some rancor in with the nauseating unction that the rest of the press were giving the lennons. Some of his stuff was unnecessarily meant to provoke but life is like that. He wanted to see if these two were genuinely peaceful or if their veneer could be broken by some nastiness. And it worked. I love lennon's music but he was no MLK or Gandhi and it's obvious here
xtrmsprts 3 months ago
@xtrmsprts
my point is that you don't have to be Ghandi to think the war in Vietnam or all wars were bad. John & Yoko
never claimed to be more than that.
L0un9ePunk 3 months ago 3
@L0un9ePunk It's plain here and you should chide yourself for not seeing it, that they put themselves out here as icons of peace, implicitly or explicitly, and capp with a clever use of nastiness showed they can lose their own peace very easily. If it's all too complicated for you think of it this way : It's like a PETA activist who is campaigning outside KFC... while enjoying a Big Mac. Hope that clears your confusion, friend.
xtrmsprts 3 months ago
@xtrmsprts ahhh. i see what you did there. you think that being capable of anger or violence discredits anyone who desires peace. Besides, John defended his talking points without insulting anyone and if raising his voice a little and exhibiting frustration with a obvious troll makes him a a total hypocrite in your eyes then maybe you should consider chiding yourself for such a cemented mindest.
L0un9ePunk 3 months ago
@L0un9ePunk No, because like I said we are not holding capp and the lennons to the same standard of conduct because they have chosen different roles for themselves - lennons the self-appointed voices of peace & capp as the no-nonsense critic. I admire Capp for entering the lion's lair and taking the lennons to task. That's not trolling, that's argumentation, critical thought, penetrating an issue. We need more of that than mute acceptance of whatever celebrities say. You're just starstruck, brotha
xtrmsprts 3 months ago
@xtrmsprts
You presume too much and confuse pathological contrarianism for 'no-nonsense critique'
L0un9ePunk 3 months ago

From the French re-colonialisation, To Tonkin Gulf, to the Cambodian bombing: A SHAM
sgtwok 1 year ago

If Capp had confronted him during his Beatles prime (1965-67), Lennon would've shredded Capp verbally.
sneezepal 1 year ago
@sneezepal Lennon's personal life was chaotic, frequently dominated by drugs between the mid-1960s and -70s. He was NO philosopher, much less an intellectual, despite his early-Yoko-era pronouncements. His worldview remained naive at best. Thankfully, Lennon matured in the late 70s. He then returned to the field in which he belonged: his MUSIC. The man wasn't a deep thinker, dammit; he was an ARTIST. "Double Fantasy" contains some of Lennon's finest work --

I don't agree with Capp. But Lennon and Ono were doing a sort of "performance" in order to shock people to look at things differently. And they were using media publicity, which cuts both ways.
Capp's hostility partly generational, he was clearly annoyed by "free-love hippies." Lennon and Ono should have also expected enemies as well as friends and delt with him accordingly.
geinikan1kan 1 year ago

I don't know if you were alive back then, well I was, and 99.9% of the folks at that time felt that it was a shameless publicity stunt feeding upon the tension and anger over the Vietnam War. These two were marketing themselves and their products on the backs of those who had suffered for their beliefs whether for or against the war.
doubleugly889 1 year ago
@doubleugly889 I respectfully disagree. A person who laughs in your face, drops an arrogance bomb like "I can see why you want peace, god knows you can't have much" and then says, "I am sorry for you," is practicing typical troll behavior, baiting for an emotional response. Perhaps he's right that their stunt was useless and disrespectful, but his swagger and condescending tone masks any honest, academic point to be made, and he will always come off as a pinched-up troll. To me.

I'm not surprised Lennon got upset. to evangelosism, as CRAZY as John and Yoko sound to us all these days, back then it was a genuine stance to take.

I think Frank Zappa was jealous of the success to some extent, "All You Need is Love" is poetry and is obviously not meant to be taken literally.. John Lennon said it was "peace propaganda" to put the idea of peace into more people's minds.

John hated confrontation.
It's a little surprising to see him like this actually.
Usually we think of Lennon as the acid-tongued Englishman who could never be taken down by authority. In this interview, John looks a little freaked out, unsettled, and uncomfortable. Interesting POV, interesting thing to watch.

He's still being nice.

Obviously he's holding back because he's advertising "peace" and doesn't want a vicious vulgar argument to be in the newspapers instead... That would be contradictory and he would look like an idiot.

I saw the interview a few times before I am watching it on YouTube. Capp was being a total a****** and Lennon put him in his place.

I had to stop watching this.

Capp reminds me of a thickheaded big blowhard. Much like Bill O'Reilley.

.also for capp to say this whole thing was just for money pathetic...bottom line is capp had bad intentions from the start while john's intentions with the bed-in are heroic...capp's one liner's are also just weak..."the other 3 are english"???....not funny....
