  • rent should go by your income, everywere, this is about fixing todays economy. this is one that should help as well as lower inflation. why does it make sence to continue to raise inflation?

  • I've been amazed at all the evidence that rent control actually harms far far more than it helps. There are people like the woman in the video who would be harmed substantially by any increase in rent cost, but it would seem section 8 or another assistance program would be an efficient appropriate way to ensure this tenant's lifestyle. It would be interesting to hear from the other side. Are there any counter arguments out there with data to show rent control is not a dated destructive system?

  • Where are these throngs of people who are constantly having to move because of landlords constantly raising their rent? That's always the stated fear of people living under rent control....but is this actually happening in non rent controlled areas??? Where is this happening??

  • I live just outside Boston. We don't have have rent control here, and rents are skyrocketing. A lot of people I know are talking about moving out of state because it's just too expensive to live here. The landlords have dollar signs in their eyes.

  • I live in an apartment building in Santa Monica where several tenants owned houses and would stay in their unit because the rent was so cheap because of rent control. Some would sublet and would make more money than the landlord. If a landlord had the right to evict drug dealers, gang members, loud tenants, everyone would be a lot happier and there would be better communities. In Los Angeles these people are protected and a landlord has to pay them to leave their property.

  • When I owned buildings in Santa Monica, there were many tenants who used their apartments as beach homes while owning nice houses elsewhere. Rent Control is not about helping the poor and disabled, it's about political and government power over the individual.

  • Prop 99 is a taxpayer financed sham supported by politicians and developers to undermine the property rights protections provided in Prop 98. Prop 98 is the only proposition that protects ALL private property -- homes, small businesses, places of worship, family farms and ranches. And Prop 98 phases out a bad form of rent control that is banned in 44 other states.

  • Good job Jim. It is so hard for people to understand how rent control harms them.

  • Tough issue. This guy is very impressive.
