One day, way back in '60/'61 when the Shirelles, Brenda Lee and Bobby Darin (to mention my favorites) ruled the top 40s, by best friend in boarding school asked me out of the blue: "What do you think of Frances Langford? Don't you just love 'I'm in the Mood for Love'?" My friend Lenny W. was only 15 but he had the innate good taste, so rare in the that era, of caring passionately for the great American songbook.
I'm struck by her vocal strength, in addition to all her other wonderful qualities. I wonder that she might have been a great opera singer, had she chosen that route.
@jaytlr9 She did study opera as a teenager being a coloratura soprano but undergoing a tonsilectomy, the doctor snipped something he shouldn't have and it dropped her voice to a contralto. it's that contralto like sound that gives her that 'sultry' tone while still being able to do those heavenly pianissimo's. You hit the nail on the head with 'vocal strength' That she had!
@CarloQuinto Thanks for this information; very interesting. Do you .kno

Thanks for this information. I imagine it must have been quite a shock when she found out that she could no longer sing opera. But then, another door was about to be opened for her...and for her fans.
I first saw Frances on Okinawa (She was doing a USO Show) during the Korean War. Years later, while working in Jensen Beach, Florida, I had the pleasure of meeting her, her lovely sister and her adorable mother, while working at her home. I found her to be one of the warmest, kindliest people I've ever met. She treated me as if I were one of her celebrity friends, and even introduced me to several of them. Always a wonderful Lady !!!
@CaptRhett1 Frances seems like a fairy tale princess to me. Good. Just plain good. Loving, caring, humble, but with just the right amount of ego to be able to perform on national radio, star in movies, make records. Never had to go to re-hab. Didn't have to spend years in psycho analysis. A whole, healthy personality and gorgeous to boot!
@CaptRhett1 This is so nice to hear. I knew nothing about her other than her singing, but this is the impression I got *from* her singing. Thanks for sharing your memories.
I regret all of the years I never bothered to find out more about Frances Langford. This morning I saw her in the movie "The Glen Miller Story". I had seen this movie before, but evidentally missed her performance. I was named after Frances; my dad was one of her biggest fans. Now that I have reached the ripe old age of 70, I finally opened my eyes and ears.
@franniejane63 Welcome to the Club! it's nice to meet another Frances! A magical name if there ever was one.. The club is growing as people begin to realize what a glorious artist Frances is. If you want to have some fun with Frances Langford, I have written a time travel novel about her called 'WILL I EVER KNOW' A man in the present hears Frances on a CD, falls in love with her voice and manages to time travel back to 1945 to meet her. A nice companion to all her videos on youtube.
@1905compton 'LOST IN THE SPELL' is finished. I just completed the third manuscript review. When they incorporate my corrections, I'll get #4 and hopefully that will be IT, and we can go to press. I am listening to some of Frances radio appearances. What impresses me is that so many times the audience applauds vigorously but also cheers! And its not just the Military audience. AH, the power of Langford!
I know a reliable camel company if you want to go that route but otherwise amazon.com is the place. It's not posted there yet. It should be soon. Any Barnes and Noble will order it for you. They are affiliated with Outskirts Press. They just don't stock it in store, though they should.
@1905compton GOOD NEWS! 'Lost in the Spell' is now available at the Barnes&Noble online store. It's still not on Amazon. Each site has to upload material individually.
That is a truly beautiful video rendition of the song! How did you get the pictures? I grew up listening to Frances, because, the guitarist behind her in 2 of the pics was my dad Tony Romano. Lifelong, Frances would almost not sing unless my dad was playing for her, and often sang this song and many others with only his guitar accompaniment. The original Bob Hope troupe who toured the world for USO were called 'the 4 gypsies' : Hope, Langford, Romano, (Jerry) Colonna.
@enigmamelodies Thank you so much for your kind comments! Really appreciated! I love everything about Frances. She was a song stylist, great actress and comedienne, at home in all media. Love your Dad's work with her in movies and shows. They worked so well together. Would love to hear your reminiscences about them. I've written 2 time travel novels about her. Will I Ever Know available from Amazon, com & soon to be published sequel, Lost in the Spell

I am so grateful that you are bringing Frances to the attention f the public. I listened to the song again and I thought how you might got the idea for a science fiction book from it. It is a great thought. I can't wait to read it. I will get back to you later with stories and more and more.... Thanks again
@enigmamelodies I thank you so much for your support! I look forward to your stories. FYI each Saturday night between 9-10PM Eastern, I call in to WYYR.COM an internet radio station that plays Big Band 1930's-40's music, with a Frances Langford request. Chris Valenti, the host is a big Frances Fan also having interviewed her in 1997 for a show. I think you would like it.
@enigmamelodies As far as the pictures, I google Frances every so often and I seem to find more photos each time I do. I'm sure there are tons more...just have to find them.
I just posted another magical Frances Langford song on the 'Tube. "Sooner or Later" It might not be familiar to most of you but I'm sure you're gonna love it!

@predlycon Thank You so much! Again no disrespect for Vera Lynne, a great artist in her own right. I just wanted to set the (78rpm) record straight. I agree, THE definitive version of this classic.
@royalprotector Thank you so much! I appreciate your support and enthusiasm. Frances needs to be loved and remembered and people need to be reminded what a great artist she was and still is.

Unlike a lot of "band singers," she could carry a tune. And I mean that as a complement.

Frances Langford was my father's 2nd cousin. And though I never knew her, I often bring up youtube to watch her film segments and listen to her songs.
I especially like this compilation of photos and Frances' song. (As I recall, it was specifically written for her.)
