This is one of the better videos from the 80's. It even stands against many of the videos we see today. Robert always did have a good creative spirit. He was a very equal part of what Zeppelin was doing...and his own career stands well on its own. Not many mega group singers can pull that off.

I just heard this song a the radio. I'm speechless! The melody is so intense and leering. He's my favorite lyricist. The only reason the 80's had some okay music was because of the musicians from the 60's-70's. "IIIII know, whhyyy ooo." Just beautiful. I guess Plant's 39, if this is in '88. Well, it's time for me to buy "Zen and Now." Zee you great fans later:)
This song is one that puts Robert Plante in the poetic realm of Bob Dylan, John Lennon and Jim Morrison. He's actually making 3 and 4syllable words rhyme! Dan K., Grafton, Mass.
Tell me about it, I took my then good friend to see Plant and Cheap Trick at Saratoga Performing Arts Center on this tour... fast forward about 20 years and we were discussing how a band could do it justice at our wedding (Ended up using Back in the High Life Again by Winwood instead)... yay for us olde phartes!!! :)
Ok Atiamutonvnad, what an obtuse commentary. There was junk in the 80's like now, the difference being, in the 80's at least they were musicians not just 'artists' unable to create music, and 'sampling' other musicians riffs and adding words that (oh my god) rhyme! Wow, and to think they can probably hardly spell the words, its like, amazing creative talent for these new 'artists'. Please. I'll take the 80's.
Lol, if I had to pick a time period it'd be the 70s for me. 80s was the time of awful style and a lot of bad things. Plus most of the music from the 80s I dont really like.
You're the only one with a problem. We're all Robert Plant fans here, nothing less. One of the greatest talents of our century. This song gives me hope.
if you are not in tune with music which has nothing to do with the faggots that read the bible. there is more meaning to music than a shitty bible written by a fucking moron. point being made music cant compare to religion because music is far greater than any god can imagine. for gods have no imagination becuase they have no depth beyond the depth that draws themselves. religion is bullshit, its a crutch, robert plant relates to no similaic crutch. (please correct me on my spelling}
You truly disgust me, how could you ever say that anything is better or greater than God! You truly are an idiot, it's scary to know that there are people out there like you.
apart from the fact that there is no god. it is scary that there are people out there like YOU who have been spoon fed religion and are stupid enough to believe it. go read a book (other than the bible). on another note, good song. *thumbs up*
U must have a lot of hatred in you to say that a human actually has more imagination than God. God imagined u and made u. So u are so narrow minded. I feel sorry for u. Find yourself and find peace in you.
I somewhat agree with that, but I'm not saying anything to go against the song or gods, or n e thing. The song is great, but ya it does have a lot of religion in it & I don't exactly believe in n e thing religion related, so ya. ^^"
I notice the time reviews on these videos are getting longer and longer. Must mean everyone is turning in to an old fogies. I dont think the ship of fools song came out until the mid eighties. I remember the eighties. I think they were a terrible period of time. Cold war and bad politics, and no DNA data at that time to keep people safe. No computers except for the military. Then walla! Microsoft invented what the military already had. Hmm? They played with our lives too much. Thanks Robert,
What is ashame is that most musicians can't name the guitarist that played on this track and most of Now and Zen..."Doug Boyle's" guitar work on this disc and song is beautiful and haunting...and as far as Post Zep work, probably the best guitarist Plant worked with. If Zep hadn't existed everyone would know his name...but since Page is such a ghost in Plants musical panorama, no one will remember this other guy. Peopl place too much emphasis on what has been, and miss was is...
You are the fools and youtube is the ship. I have practically worshipped this guy since my earliest youth. I love playing with your silly little minds. Robert Plant is the best.
Music & videos are often illusions..Mend to be. A picture of feelings. Robert Plant is full of rhytm and music inside.
If you listen to Plant"s experiments with india-sounds...on audio as well as in concert you will realize that the man is full of rhytm and has a sound-ear like not many else.
So much wonderful music from him from the late sixties to today. He is THE REAL "Elvis" in my opinion. Modern music's pre-eminent voice. Tasteful and intelligent as always

You people are idiots. Led Zeppelin was the greatest band in the world with the worst singer in the world. It's too bad. They could have been so much greater with ANY other singer.
Robert Plant is a Rock God, and Led Zeppelin to millions around the world is the Greatest Rock Band ever because of RP. You must be very young, because I remember the glory days of Led Zeppelin. Your comment doesn't make any sense. I would never understand if you don't care for Robert's singing, why you would waste your time spamming his videos. I personally love his voice and have done so since first hearing him with LP in the early 70s. His voice is unique and unparalled.
You say that they could have been better with someone else?!?! If they had anyone other than Plant, half of the songs they have would be nonexistent. In a jigsaw puzzle, if you take a piece, you don't get the whole picture. In the band if you take away ANY of the members, you don't get Led Zeppelin. They were all so perfect together.
Yeah, alot of ppl dont respect his post zeppelin career, but they dont see that robert is one of those artist who really do expand in their music intersests.
get a life! what are you talking about imagery for when the man has been out since before the age of video? he was so great and sounds wonderful in live clips, and his voice doesn't age. you're not worth replying to but i did anyway, since i just saw him a few days ago. he is just about the best singer alive and the only person out there who is worth the admission price!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love the Plant

Besides the lyrics are clear. And stranger still my self control I can't rely on anymore.
New tides surprise - my world it's changing
Within this frame an ocean swells - behind this smile I know it well.Beneath a lover's moon I'm waiting
I am the pilot of the storm - adrift in pleasure I may drown
I built this ship - it is my making
And furthermore my self control I can't rely on anymore.I know why - I know why
Crazy on a ship of fools

Please. I'll take the 80's.
windmere2 3 years ago 2
Lol, if I had to pick a time period it'd be the 70s for me. 80s was the time of awful style and a lot of bad things. Plus most of the music from the 80s I dont really like.

I agree.

Roberts religion is Muslim, I dont know about his ethnicity.
SqueezeMyLemonBabe 3 years ago
AHAHA he's not muslim. He is christian, but to save face he say he's a theist.
amore101 3 years ago
From what I read he is or at least was a muslim.
SqueezeMyLemonBabe 3 years ago
There are some crazy misinformed people out there who shouldn't have access to type writers lol. Mr. Plant is a muslim as Thomas Jefferson.
amore101 3 years ago
Lol can't trust anyone nowadays can ya? Haha, well thanks for the info, don't like being misinformed!

You're the only one with a problem. We're all Robert Plant fans here, nothing less. One of the greatest talents of our century. This song gives me hope.

As any Bible thumper can tell ya, He is a Satanist...with all of that backwards masking on Zep Albums. (hogwash of course)
CWSiler 3 years ago
for your info jimmy page was satanist
not robert plant
dll7656 3 years ago
if you are not in tune with music which has nothing to do with the faggots that read the bible. there is more meaning to music than a shitty bible written by a fucking moron. point being made music cant compare to religion because music is far greater than any god can imagine. for gods have no imagination becuase they have no depth beyond the depth that draws themselves. religion is bullshit, its a crutch, robert plant relates to no similaic crutch. (please correct me on my spelling}

You truly disgust me, how could you ever say that anything is better or greater than God! You truly are an idiot, it's scary to know that there are people out there like you.
jdh560th 3 years ago
apart from the fact that there is no god. it is scary that there are people out there like YOU who have been spoon fed religion and are stupid enough to believe it. go read a book (other than the bible). on another note, good song. *thumbs up*
ledzeppelin26 3 years ago
U must have a lot of hatred in you to say that a human actually has more imagination than God. God imagined u and made u. So u are so narrow minded. I feel sorry for u. Find yourself and find peace in you.
fuvang 3 years ago
I somewhat agree with that, but I'm not saying anything to go against the song or gods, or n e thing. The song is great, but ya it does have a lot of religion in it & I don't exactly believe in n e thing religion related, so ya. ^^"

Actually Robert Plant is muslim.
P.S. you obviously dont know what a satanist is.

Anyone on here ever heard of sarcasm?
My comment in regards to Robert Plant being a Satanist was a dig at the idiot Thumpers out there, not at Robert, he is the man!

Thanks Robert,
Atiamutonvnad 3 years ago
came out in spring of 88' ....oh by the way, folks are turning to the classics cause the music of today sucks so bad!!!
StayingBack71 3 years ago 2
for years i've wondered why metal bands mention 'ship of fools' in their lyrics...now I know
pint12 3 years ago

Great calm song full of hope

Love this man's voice!

They could have been so much greater with ANY other singer.
tardwhisperer 3 years ago
Robert Plant is a Rock God, and Led Zeppelin to millions around the world is the Greatest Rock Band ever because of RP. You must be very young, because I remember the glory days of Led Zeppelin. Your comment doesn't make any sense. I would never understand if you don't care for Robert's singing, why you would waste your time spamming his videos. I personally love his voice and have done so since first hearing him with LP in the early 70s. His voice is unique and unparalled.
sierraluz 3 years ago 13
You say that they could have been better with someone else?!?! If they had anyone other than Plant, half of the songs they have would be nonexistent. In a jigsaw puzzle, if you take a piece, you don't get the whole picture. In the band if you take away ANY of the members, you don't get Led Zeppelin. They were all so perfect together.

I love Robert Plant. Such class.

Yeah, alot of ppl dont respect his post zeppelin career, but they dont see that robert is one of those artist who really do expand in their music intersests.
I love his songs.

I would not say that Robert has class. It's amazing to me how much power imagery and illusion has over the minds of fools like you.
tardwhisperer 3 years ago
get a life! what are you talking about imagery for when the man has been out since before the age of video? he was so great and sounds wonderful in live clips, and his voice doesn't age. you're not worth replying to but i did anyway, since i just saw him a few days ago. he is just about the best singer alive and the only person out there who is worth the admission price!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
