The real issue should be the photos that are presented as real, but are in fact not real at all. They are edited so heavily that it would be more appropriate to compare them to visual art that was once based on a photograph. There are examples abound.

The beauty industry's about selling an aspirational ideal - they create a standard and then make money off people trying to meet that expectation. Photoshopping models to create 'perfection' that doesn't exist just means they can make more money, because it's an impossible standard. People don't realise it though, so they try to meet it and judge others when they don't measure up. The whole industry's based around making people feel inadequate and then exploiting it
