What ive noticed with irish music, is that some same songs are sung by different groups. foggy dew, rocky road to dublin, danny boy, etc. Still love irish music. favorite Genre!!
@MinosDaedalus Well ..the dialect is not Irish ...its Newfoundland in Canada...An Irish actor visiting there remarked about the accents of certain parts of Newfoundland as being Irish,so I guess in a way you are correct.
mrterrorkiller on crack?! This is an interesting rendition of the song and all, but the Dubliners are were in a totally different league than these guys, not even nearly comparable in terms of their skill or understanding of Irish music ... 50 years ago!!!
@MrTerrorkiller The original Dubliners version? Or the modern one? If you're talking about the newer version with Sean Cannon then I can understand if you prefer this. But if you're talking about Luke Kellys versions then I'm sorry but you don't know what youre talkin about.
Speaking as a self-respecting Newfoundlander... we don't TYPE our accent. Not as accurately as you guys are trying to. Frankly, it's embarrassing to go on these videos and to see mainlanders trying to 'talk like a Newfie'. We DO learn proper English here, you know. We don't go on 'talkin' like dis ere, b'y. Sure we'd get nuttin' done if we was goin' round talkin' like it, me son!'
....This is a 'folk' song....There is no such thing as the 'wrong' lyrics. They change. May or June.....Near or Nigh...As long as the meanings are the same. Different groups put their own take on this incredible fun tune....
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the lyrics. I can definately hear them pronounce a B on the latter one, and while I know most other version of this song use 'daylight', being the Irish Descendants and all; I can't be too sure. I'll look into it some more I guess.
@Rheostatik The lyrics he's using are from the Dropkick's version.
And it's not "Galway boys were Nigh" it's definitely "Some Galway boys were by" - It sounds like that and it fits with the song - He got in a fight, some lads from Galway were there, they joined in.
Erin go brach! :)))
