@DrewDawg50 Listen to Bird and tell me he doesnt sound like coleman hawkins. Listen to Trane when he played alto and tell me he didnt sound like Bird. Listen to early Miles and tell me he didnt sound like Diz. Jazz improvisation is a language, If i couldnt use the words everyone else used in english, how would i talk?

@DrewDawg50 i think youre right. at least a little bit..

this guy in the clip plays fantastic, and to play like that.. it takes YEARS of intense practise.. i know that cause i study saxophone myself and im on the beginning at highschool.but he's nothing special. what he plays isnt authentic in ANY way..

he transcribed and listened a LOT and i pay lot of respect cause this is very difficult and takes LOT of time, patience.. but i dont know if the work is worth it. i dont think so. my opinion!

@Dougles15 Have ever heard the concept that I believe Clark Terry stated? "Imitate-Emulate-Innovate. This dude is probably in the emulating phase which is normal for college students. Before you can develop your own voice, you listen to the masters and study them. After studying, the personal voice comes. It takes some longer than others, but he can get there.

@Owunthrizzel 1. youre right, it takes longer to get there and 2. I DONT think, that you have to get through all these steps. you know.. concerning that "transcription thing".. everyone has a different opinion. i personally dont want to play "charlie parker licks".. you will hear that in this guys playing for his entire live most probably.

@ChristianGastl Whats wrong with charlie parker licks? Playing like bird didnt damage John Coltrane or Miles Davis career. THey both came out of Parker, and they are two of the most innovative musicians (jazz or otherwise) ever. Whether you transcribe or not, you have to study scales, chords, and ii-V's. If you don't do these things, then you are missing a part of developing improvisation skills.

@ChristianGastl Also, I checked out your vids. You sound like other smooth jazz sax players. Should i knock you down a peg for that? I dont think so. If you wanna play smooth then you should sound the cats that play smooth. This tenor player wants to play bebop so he should play like the bebop cats. You play "smooth" licks. He plays "bebop" licks. Makes sense to me. Also I think if this tenor player played a blues, he'd play more than just the blues scale and one ii-V in bar 8.
