my dad loves Neil Diamond grew up listening to him and Elton John. two of my favorit all time singers. Now my daughter loves them. this is what music is all about. not some of that crap that is out now. if we play this type of music for our kid and grand kids it will live on forever.
Had a dream and it filled me with wonder! She had other plans. Got to go, but I know that you'd understand. I understand. Shilo, when I was young, I used to call your name. When no one else would come, Shilo you always came (fade out)....
Young girl with fire. Something said she understood. I wanted to fly. She made me feel like I could! Held my hand out, I let her take me blind as a child. All I saw was the way that she made me smile. She made me smile. Shilo, when I was young, I used to call your name. When no one else would come, Shilo, you always came, and you'd stay (musical interlude).
Young child with dreams, dream every dream on your own. When children play, seems like you end up alone. Papa says he'd love to be with you, if he had the time. So you turn to the only friend you can find there in your mind. Shilo, when I was young, I used to call your name. When no one else would come, Shilo, you always came, and we'd play.
So this is the Uni/MCA Records recording is it? kenz3737 mentions Hal Blaine but if I'm not mistaken I also detect the masterful orchestrations of Tom Catalano.
I named a beautiful GM dog after this song. He was a beautiful soul who was put to sleep at 2 years with epilepsy and perianal fistulas, he loved kids and had the uncanny ability of sensing my 60 year old moms diabetic hypoglycemic fits thus preventing her slipping into a coma, I do miss his lovely soul ! This song makes me cry ~ thank u Niel xx
Funny yet cool thing about this song: Every time I hear it, I think back to the mid to late 90s, When I was young, living in Tomales, California. My family used to have a cat named Willow to whom we also gave the nickname of "Shiloh". She eventually passed away at the age of 16 or 17, I believe, over Thanksgiving of 2003, while my mom and I were out of town. Now, when I hear this song, I am reminded of the good times I spent with her as a child. :)
@KyplayaZ4lyfe whats wrong with u.......dnt u quite understand english when u read a line...the word GAGA means infatuated or excited.......so when i said gaga ovr neil d...i meant i adored him.......its u who sudnt be posting anywhere at all......
@ranisha29 haha sorry i thought u meant lady gaga over neil diamond so thats where i was confused i thought you were saying lady gaga was better neil diamond and that was what i was referring to lol
Of course this is great; Diamond is backed by the legendary Wrecking Crew studio musicians, with Hal Blaine just absolutely propelling the band with his masterful drumming.
How many of us didn't have a "friend" nobody else could see? Looking back all these years I have to admit they were the best friend I ever had. 40+ years later no one knows their name, and never will. I owe my life and sanity to that "friend".
A friend of mine just mentioned this song randomly........after relizeing what the song was....I was instantly taken back quite a many years.......good song...but now I sadly feel old xD
Yes - this is a great early Neil Diamond song. Several versions exist. I also think this arrangement by the under-rated Lee Holdridge is the best of the lot. Neil Diamond is a great songwriter and when Lee Holdridge did the arrangements the result was pure gold. Check out Diamond's 1972 live album Hot August Night.
Agreed, shilo507. This version is the one I was looking for...and, hot august night...phew, i remember mom and dad playing it , amongst other neil records, every weekend! such good childhood memories.
When you listen to this song please think of the little girl with Mermaid's Syndrome who passed away this Friday. Her name was Shiloh and if I could have a baby I would want one just like her. Please check her story out.
I was very sad to hear about her passing, I had seen her story on T.V. and I thought her courage was pretty amazing. I hope her family is coping alright.
You know every Shiloh I have ever heard of has been a little reclusive, weird, and a loner, including myself. Usually an artist or musician. It is weird.
This Lee Holdridge arranged version is, I feel, the best studio version of this classic track. Diamond owes a lot to Lee Holdridge, not least of all Hot August Night. Shilo is an important song not only because it was Neil's first attempt at introspection (along with Brooklyn Roads) on the same Velvet Gloves & Spit album but because it was the catalyst for his break (and lawsuit) with Bang records and migration to UNI/MCA. This is why the song had to be re-recorded as Bang claimed copyright
The Hot August Night version is awesome. It has a more vocally responsive rhythm, dueling acoustics, a mandolin solo, a badass bass line and an actual ending. Check it out.
Shilo is a dog...that is what this is about...the times with Shilo. You can hear him call the dog at the end of the longer, original song!
