  • I agree with most points, but I feel political boundaries do benefit us as a species. It doesn't benefit us to compete with, but rather have different views as, a different country. I don't think any country should compete for resources. I don't feel any country should oppress their people. However, some different political views do have logical arguments on both sides and people should be able to chose if they want to live in a society that supports one side or the other.

  • @imshanedulong I never said that people shouldn't have different views or discuss those differences. It's also an idealist illusion to pretend than if you don't like the popular views of your current country than you can just pick up and move to the country of your choice that does things the way you like. I'm all for voicing and working through disagreements. I'm not for hating and killing each other over useless barriers like different religions and languages.

  • @GrapplingIgnorance I just disagree with the notion that there shouldn't be multiple countries. Maybe I misinterpreted what you said but I thought I heard that. That much centralization of power has too many problems. And I'm not suggesting one moves if they don't have the same religion as the rest of their country. I'm saying if one wishes to live in a country/state/province with a universal health care system, or that's pro-life or pro-choice, etc, it should be an option.

  • @imshanedulong I never said that we should abolish all countries and live under some new world order- the point is that nationalism is an absurd division. Also, it doesn't matter what reason you cite- suggesting that people just pack up and leave their country to go to one that suits them isn't a realistic option for the vast majority of the planet. If you're very wealthy and don't care about leaving nearly all of your family/friends, it's an option, but not for the rest of us.

  • @GrapplingIgnorance i feel bad for you im 14 i heard your sad story i hope youhaave a prosperous life

  • AWESOME message I love this vid... It gives me hope but at the same time shit dude i know it'll never happen. People are just too I dunno... Just wouldn't happen we'd still kill each other even if an outside enemy showed up...

    I can hear it now

"I don't wanna work with that Nigger"

"I rather work with the aliens than a nigger"

"I ain't workin with no honkey"

    etc etc... Fuck....

  • this sounds like halo. who needs god when you got master chief?

  • you are smart, open-minded, observe all facts and make opinion, treat other races, sixes, ect. equally, soooooooo your going to hell.

  • @TheVJackV Hah, yeah- that's about the size of it.

  • the last one. hey just asking, do you know about the venus project? or at least jaque fresco in general?

  • @Quiestre I do know of it, and it sounds very intriguing to me, but I haven't seen Jaque pressed hard enough by very educated people on societal matters to work out the hard logistics of how we'd go about it. I'd like to see him in a formal debate with someone very intellectually fit who's firmly against it to help me make a more informed decision on the matter.

  • @GrapplingIgnorance too bad jaque is allready so old, i don't expect him to have a debate anytime in his life anymore.. so an alternative would be someone who is as well equipped in the ideas of a RBE who could debate in his place. An other alternative i could give you is to just make your own questions and doubts you have, and try to figure out solutions for yourself or contact anyone who you think is capable of answering them :)

  • hehe well done. couldn't have said it better myself.

  • The world is too far beyond fucked up to ever become a Utopian society.

  • @SROnivera Globalisation destroyed americas middle class, and it enslaves most of the worlds people, you assclown. Corporate slavery is when your labor is worth 250$. The government takes 2% of that, or 10 dollars. Thats 240 dollars for your one hour of labor, right? Wrong. The other 230 is taken by the corporations, and you are left with a mere 10. Globalisation does not mean world harmony and equal prosperity, but merely balkanisation and equal misery.

  • If this video is not meant to be farce, Gene Roddenberry would be proud that his Utopian fantasy lives on. Which comes first, the singular language that eliminates communication barriers between any 2 people, or the singular government that eliminates disagreements between any 2 people? Clearly, if the rest of the world had spoken German, WWII would have never happened.

  • @JJLatBIM What the hell are you talking about? Speaking the same language does make for a remarkable improvement in communication- though obviously, two people who speak the same language of live under the same government can have disagreements. I don't see what any of that has to do with this video- not does your WWII comment have any relevancy here.

  • @GrapplingIgnorance You implied that if only we had some unifying goal like preventing humanity's sudden doom, we might finally put aside our petty differences, but without that common goal perhaps "modern logic" can achieve the same end result. Actually, you asked us to imagine it. I think the fictional fantasies of Gene Roddenberry are great inspiration for such imaginings. But fantasies are the only place they will ever be.

  • @GrapplingIgnorance well... there is the old joke about cross-cultural communication causing more and bloodier wars than anything else. I think it was Douglas Adams who put it forth about the Babel Fish.

  • @SROnivera Thanks, no big deal.

  • @SROnivera I've been respectful to you and I don't appreciate your attitude.

  • @SROnivera WOW, the point went right over your head. But in any event, regardless of what it actually is, you get called names when you ask people in the US to learn English. I personally believe that the liberals who encourage people to speak English as a second language or not at all, are badly hurting those people. It is very difficult to thrive in the US without speaking English. There are small numbers of people who can work for companies that have Spanish customers, but that's it.

  • We wouldn't have time to consider any of this. The second an alien species bumps into sarah palin or rick perry, they'll exterminate us just to be on the safe side and then fly their craft into the sun just to make sure this "religion" thing doesn't make it back to their home world.

  • I'm in agreement with all of your points. However, if aliens had the technology to transverse the galaxy and the resources to mount an invasion, united or not our attemps to defend against such opposition would more than likely be futile. If we were to come across aliens their technology would be 10s of thousands, if not millions of years more advanced. You only have to go back a tiny 100 years & look at the military of then compared to now to imagine how inadequate we would be against aliens.

  • Straight to my favourites. I know this isn't addressing the main point of this video but hopefully if advanced alien life were to ever come to earth (unlikeyly) it would be advanced enough to want to help us, rather than to take advantage of us.

  • Money is a hell of a thing

  • I like what your saying and i'ma let you finish. However wasn't this already done by Ozymandias in the watchmen. and technically speaking Lelouch vi Britannia from code geass had a similar goal that he achieved. btw sorry for the anime reference lol. it seems, no matter what, humans will not take action to the hypothetical and will only act in a real loss of life scenario.

  • @govcolin Exactly. It makes some formerly frosty areas fertile, it changes the rainfall in areas where rice could barely be grown to rich fields, it even makes the owners of higher-situated estate richer because the estate is then seen as safe from the flood.

Think about the envy... No cooperation.

  • Imagine this: You could hand a solar-powered laptop to a child in Africa, and that child could just use Google to look up agriculture and metallurgy and chemistry and instantly transform their society into a modern one, all that society would lack is a few generations to develop their technology. Only that can't ever happen, because that child doesn't speak English, or any of the other major languages the internet is written in.

  • @7j8i9m A. You know that google isn't a magic want like that right? Simply knowing how something works doesn't give your nation the resources or means of adapting the information into practical infrastructure. Also, if that was how it worked and one laptop could transform an entire society with the power of a search engine if not for language restrictions, then it would make perfect sense to start raising people with an international first language like English.

  • @GrapplingIgnorance But as soon as you ask people in the US to learn to speak English, you're a racist.

  • Wow, I was not expecting such a well thought out speech here. Well done. I have to say I wonder these questions too. I don't thin, humanity will figure out how to overcome the differences in one another until its too late to really save anything.

Look at global warming; 20+ years in the making and we still don't care.

Green energy; its trendy, not what people think we NEED.

Racism is RAMPANT, for no good reason.

We are fighting wars that don't even make sense.

    Humans are just doomed.

  • Also, as far as a universal language, we DO technically have one. Its called Math. However, its rather hard and ill-adept at usage for conversation. While I would like to have everybody speak my language and not have to learn another one, I have heard from others that it is the hardest language to learn, even above Chinese which has, what, ten times the characters?

  • @hellfencer Math is a means of numerical and logistic computation, not a means of communication. English makes the most sense as the international language. It's spoken by the most countries as a second language. In one generation we could have a global language if we'd stop clinging to traditions over stubborn pride.

  • @GrapplingIgnorance I agree stubborn pride is causing most of the issues amongst humans. Too prideful to give in to someone that isn't "me me me". Too prideful to admit that maybe your way isn't the best way. Too prideful to look beyond cultural differences and be okay with it.

Humans suck. We are but parasites to this planet.

  • that sometimes crosses my mind. you would think that common grievances like natural disasters, global warming, etc. would act as the "alien," but instead they polarize us further. it's all so fucking stupid.

  • @govcolin Natural disasters and "global warming" are both local, they will not supply a common enemy.

  • @ZdenekJindra must a "common enemy" be non-local? if there ever is one, it will probably be just that: local.

  • @govcolin You didn't understand. If people were to join up against any kind of problem, this problem would have to impact everyone exactly by the same amount. If one group is damaged any less than another, they will not cooperate. And this difference applies to all problems including the global warming. That means no coordinated single anti-alien war.

  • @ZdenekJindra so just to be clear: you're saying that global warming does not effect everyone equally? i'm not disputing, just clarifying.

  • Comment removed

  • All mankind coming together for the greater good of mankind? Never. Not even with limitless, free energy, food for everyone, etc. and the massive shift in mentality associated with gaining those things. Someone will always want to fuck the next guy over just to get a little bit more...

  • Everybody should learn his country's language and a not-invented-yet global language.

  • @EspritDeBottineQc That makes little sense. Why invent an entirely different language (that was the goal of Esperanto) when there is already an international language which is the most popularly spoken second language throughout the world. It would be the easiest to convert to a first language, while people learning their "country's" language as a second if they insist on clinging to that tradition. That current international language happens to be English.

  • @GrapplingIgnorance I heard of esperanto, now that you say it. But the problem with english, is that it is already the first language of many people. I think that no already existing language should be used as the universal language, because it also make one culture dominant above others. It would be easier, for sure to use english, but maybe not the best solution. I also said that people should keep their first language because cultural diversity is very important. 500 letters isnt enough lol

  • @EspritDeBottineQc If every country in the world taught the same language as the -first- language, there would be no dominance, because everything produced culturally would be in the same language, for everyone to experience. (Nobody would go "everyone speaks MY language", because it would be everyone's language)

I believe there will be a world language one day, and it will be American English, but it won't be the same. (since it's just a mutt language anyway, and continues to change over time)

  • @EspritDeBottineQc Slowing down the entire process by inventing a new language just to say "Here, now everyone has to work equally hard to do something none of you want to do!" is backwards. It makes much more sense to bring everyone together in the most efficient way possible. It's not about cultural dominance, and in ONE single generation, everyone would have the same first language. Originality languages can become 2nd languages, but they really aren't needed for the sake of diversity.

  • @GrapplingIgnorance What I can say is that this is the first subject I don't agree with you :p

  • Communism is not the answer.

    Realization, is.

  • Call me a pesimistic, but I think we'd still find a way to fight each other... The great Monty Python agree with me...

    Judean People's Front! Fcuk off!

  • It's impossible. Too much greed and human nature is too corrupt. The way we are now may expand with the availability of information on the internet, but a supreme ruling body would just be a disaster. You still need smaller bodies in regions and that fight for resources would always continue with oil or any other resource held hostage by the regions. Greed ALWAYS wins. ALWAYS. English is already the universal language BTW. I don't see there being a more universal way to express information.

  • @GrapplingIgnorance how old are you? are you and english professor?

  • Imagine all the people, sharing all the world woooohoooo, you may say im a dreamer but im not the only one, I hope someday you'll join us and the world will live as one. Thumbs up on your video.

  • Why do the aliens always have to be evil bastards who invade and slaughter us?! Does this scenario change if they swoop down and explain that all those angels and gods who have imbued such wonders as fire and the wheel upon us were actually them all along? 'Cause that's how it goes in my head!

  • As sad as it is I would have to say the only way we can put our differences aside is with a Watchmen Scenario, where the entire globe is in danger of obliteration by an outside force, be it alien or planet killer Space Junk. There are too many stubborn and stupid people who make up the majority of the population willing to put aside their differences for any shared goal. But then again I have no faith in Humanity any more…

  • The answer to your first questions? Yes. People do consider those things important even in crisis. It is stupid, I know. But just look at black people not being allowed to fight in the WW's. And later being used as fodder. Look at gays now not being allowed in the military. You overestimate people. People are morons. To the last second of their life.

  • Why would aliens waste resources on military conquest of Earth? They can simply exploit religions superstitions by claiming to be any god they prefer to impersonate and using unseen technology to successfully convince countless millions of theists. It then wouldn't be so hard to manipulate humans into wiping out ourselves.

  • @futureorreligion I thought they were already doing that *points at islam and christianity*. Or maybe people are just that narrow-minded and short-sighted...

  • @futureorreligion

Nailed it. That's why aliens are so into hybrids. They need a decent Ted Nuggent Looking Jesus character.

  • This was eloquently stated and well crafted thinking GI, and I too would love a world like that. I don't think even modern reason can save us though, much as we'd like to have that kind of unity. If there is one thing I think everyone could agree on it is this, men are extraordinarily skilled and created when it comes to killing each other. So much so that I don't see us stopping for anything less than an external threat to us all.

  • What do you know: Grappler here supports the globalist agenda. Big fucking surprise. One race, one language, one government.

  • @TheJamesrocket Yes. Because, obviously, hating one another and allowing ourselves to be divided has done so much for us in terms of safety and progress. Yes, military tech has allowed us to do peaceful things; but, it has also unlocked things like the nuclear bomb. Are you HONESTLY suggesting that a united earth is somehow worse than an earth that could easily destroy itself at any moment?

To desire a world fractured and hostile rather than unified and peaceful is to desire death.

  • @SwordofKnowledge United under what? Who will lead the NWO? What happens to the sovereign rights of nations? And borders have a purpose beyond mere 'segregation': Their purpose is a cultural levee to smooth over ethnic frictions. Once they get eroded away, then its anyones game. Unification does not necessarily eqaul peace, ignoramus.

But people like you can't be bothered with such details. Your crowd advocated deregulation of international trade, and helped bring on the great recession.

  • John Lennon couldn't have said it better himself.

  • Once again, I find myself nodding and applauding your ideas. You never disappoint. Great job, love. Great job.

  • Good stuff. Have you heard about the resource based economy?

  • @webgeek6 There is no economy that is not resource-based. Statism, Free market, Venus Project... they are all resource-based. What you're speaking of is that of 'Correlation to people's wants'. You will not get that with Statism or The Venus Project. You're between a rock and a hard place.

  • I would join the aliens. History has taught me not to trust humans.

  • @HybridD91 I get why you would. But I doubt they would reciprocate; assuming they're anything like us, I doubt they'll embrace an "inferior." And if they aren't, well... How could we possibly understand their motivations, or desires?

  • @HybridD91 The aliens agree... and you're a human.

  • Setting the ultimate goal of global unity aside for the moment, I'm curious how the language thing would work. Everyone would necessarily have to be bilingual. Which language would be the "universal" one? How would you decide? If by something arbitrary, like, population, then Mandarin Chinese would be the universal language of which you speak. Interesting. What criteria do you think most relevant? :)=

  • Considering every event of colonization in history, no. We wouldn't set down our differences in the face of a greater difference, or impending doom. Languages also have a evolutionary and genetic diversity. Forcing the entire world into a monoculture language (or monoculture ANYTHING) strikes me as as a terrible idea. Having a universal auxiliary language that most people speak though strikes me as a good idea. (*cough* ENGLISH ALREADY *cough*)

  • I can only assume your being rhetorical, because the answer is yes we're that short sighted and dumb and no outside visions of Roddenberry theres next to no hope we'll live in peace and harmony. Still a pleasant fiction none the less.

  • But...but...if we all begin to speak the language, god will come down and zap us, so we won't be able to achieve anything. Remember the Tower of Babel? Careful about suggesting such dangerous ideas! ;-)

  • What if the aliens just wanted to talk? What language would we teach to them? English seems like a natural choice, but what about the billions of people who only speak other languages, such as Mandarin or Arabic? Would they just be cut off from communication with the aliens?

  • @FarUnlitUnknown because the aliens can't learn more than one single language?

  • Only till the stink'n alien scum where annihilated and erraticated from this Earth. And not one second longer.

  • I do encourage holding onto some cultural traditions like foods, music, festivals, language, things like that. But beyond that not really. I'd much rather see humanity pool their resources and work for a better tomorrow. Sounds cliche. But when you watch shows like Star Trek, makes you wonder if it's possible. A president of Earth. Wouldn't that be interesting. A veritable paradise, no war, no starvation, no poverty . . . the only thing that stands in our way is ourselves.

  • @Swidhelm Music? Sure. Food? Hell yeah! Language? I really don't care. It's unfortunate that certain speeches, poems etc. can only be appreciated when heard in their native tongue, but refusing to adopt a universal language to ensure that all major works can be appreciated by EVERYONE in the future still makes much more sense than continuing to limit the audiences of such works to the speakers of particular divided languages.

  • @GrapplingIgnorance If the universal language was Esperanto, which is both very expressive and at least ten times easier than e.g. English (I have learnt both as second languages so I'm in a good position to compare), then there would be no need to drop local languages. Children could be taught Eseranto within two years then move on to the language of some neighboring/remote country/ethny to exprand their horizons. I would hate to see the beautiful language diversity of this planet disappear.

  • @GrapplingIgnorance I vote the globel language be klingon

  • @GrapplingIgnorance Oh I agree with language. What I mean by encouraging traditional languages isn't to make them someone's first language so much as a secondary or even rudimentary, to at least understand or appreciate their heritage, more in an academic sense. Like learning old English. For all intents and purposes it is a dead language, but things like that are interesting to learn for a number of reasons, not least of which is ancestral.

  • @GrapplingIgnorance

It wouldn't be "a shame" to loose all but 1 language. More like everyone everywhere only ever eating fast food and listening to justin-beiber-style pop. It would be awful. And isn't English already a global common tongue?

200 politicians with ESL at UN would be better than the 1000s of translators we have now, yes. It would also be better than a 1000s of dead languages.

  • @akylae101

English will be spoken by technicians, programmers, and official business. Chinese will be spoken for everyday life.

  • @Callirgos1

    Why?

More people speak English as a second language than Mandarin and more Chinese are learning English than anyone else learning Mandarin. English is already inter-lingua in India, EU, SAR, Nigeria, aviation and IT. Mandarin is limited to mainland China and isn't inter-lingua anywhere. Unlike most other languages, Mandarin uses tones and pictographs. Like most languages, English is written in the Roman alphabet and is in the language family spoken by 50% of humanity.

    Why "Chinese"?

  • @GrapplingIgnorance This I do not fully agree with (which is unusual for your videos mind you ;)) Language and different systems of language are a benefit simply from the viewpoint of having different linguistic viewpoints. You can't translate from one language to another 1 to 1 - there are subtle alterations in the context and actual meaning in the speech. An universal language would be simpler and far less nuanced than some of the ridiculously rich and complex small languages.

  • @GrapplingIgnorance i wouldn't go president

i think it'd be safer to go with an emperor

this might sound evil and that but think about it

presidents are only in office for a few years and they waste way to much time tring to get reelected then actually doin stuff

they worry more about making the poeple happy and making a profit then actually doing a good job and keeping it's poeple safe

also even in america super cooperations use their money to influence politions

  • @GrapplingIgnorance i wouldn't go president

  • @GrapplingIgnorance in terms of communincation, almost the whole world speaks english today, and as the majority of people that don't speak english are the adults that didn't learn it at school and can't catch up with it, i belive that the gap will be closed completely in a few generations.

in terms of art-i don't think it all can work in just one language.

    the coltuere impacts the language.

  • @GrapplingIgnorance in hebrew, for exemple, a lot of military phrases turned into everyday language, mainly in sexual context, so using them for both is something that can really critisize the israeli colture, and yet be meaningless in any other language.

  • @Swidhelm Foods, music, and types of festivities that cross cultures improve greatly. Go for the things in all cultures that do work, and discard the things that don't. I wouldn't want a single Earth government though, unless we have a society on an inter-solar scale. Not only do we stand in our own way though, but scarcity does as well. The temptation for people to want more than what everyone could have if everyone on earth was equal is too great. You probably have more than the global mean..

  • @MacabreManifesto ...prosperity per capita. The US has 5% of the global population, but consumes 25% of the resources and you are experiencing the plus side of it. We may not be able to live well and equally at the same time. But as technology improves, this will change. Human priorities are not dead set in favor of the fastest technological progression possible, but even if they were time separates us from paradise because it will be a while before we obtain "post scarcity" if is even possible.

  • werwerwerwerwerwerwerwerwerwerwerwerwerwerwerwerwerwerwerwerwerwerwer

  • referencing Predator :)

  • English looks to be well on it's way to being a universal second language since people want to take advantage of the fact that with the web, we can comunicate with anybody in the world. There's no reason people can't keep their first languages, and just use English for universal communication. People In Europe are already tend to know several languages because they have so many countries so close together. In the US we don't travel enough to need other languages.

  • I don't know how well we would unite against a common threat, we're still fighting over wether or not 9/11 reponders should get medical care. It took 10 years to pass the bill to help them, leaving plenty of time for many of them to die, and it still doesn't cover cancer. People always seem to need some "other" to hate, but even more than that, people are looking to make a buck off anything they can, and a way to grab as much power as they can.

  • @1009541074brb

You need to either stop mixing your street drugs, or remember to take the ones your doc gave you.

Either way, you need to sleep it off, or call 911.

  • you sound like Viete from the watchman. :D love it

  • we have been here for ages man............you all just scare the shit out of us

for one gerimiah minute do you think we would realistically say HI

get a fuckin grip......the space ship is broke so we are stuck with it

  • If only, GI, if only. I think we're too immature for that. Myself included, unfortunately.

Surrendering the illusion of identity is evidently far too frightening a concept to undertake, even if you're replacing it with an updated version capable of meeting the challenges or organizing the species collectively to create a smarter, safer, healthier world. It would take the cooperation of everyone on the planet. It would take the eradication of competition itself.

I'd love to see it happen.

  • An international language is a god idea, but the language should have an easy grammar with no irregular verbs and it should be obvious how to pronounce the words when you read them,as it would be obvious how to write the word when you hear them.

  • Actually, the politics and values of the aliens must be considered. Are they pro-choice or pro-life? Are they religous and do they lean more toward republicans, democrats or are they independents? Also, from which contellation do they heil? These questions you pose are extremely bigoted against interstellar conquerers and I don't appreciate the assumption that we are here to kill humans. We come in peace. Always.

  • I bet not even that would get some monkeys to wake up and quit acting like they deserve to be called monkeys :3

  • Was anyone else thinking of "Watchmen" after this video?

  • I think we will all unanimously agree 2 things:

    1. Everything we bitch about now (petty differences, ethnicity, nationality and all that) was ultimately pointless.

    2. AUGH MY LEG! THEY'RE BURNING THROUGH MY LEGS! WHHHYY ME??! AAAAAAAAAAUUUGH!!!!!

Though I think all the racist, ignorant folks will be focusing on the later and not even consider the 1st. I find people that are nationalistic or bigoted tend only to care about themselves and their sphere of influence.

  • This video makes me wanna strip naked, burst out of my window, free fall 28 floors, faceplant in the snow, make a snow angel mixed with my own blood, shiver from the cold, get hypothermia, DIE, go the pearly gate, say wuzzup to Jesus, do our secret hand shake, look for Buddha, find him, have him reincarnate me into a frog, meet a princess, kiss her, turn into a prince, order my subjects to bring me a computer, listen to this song again, cry myself to sleep. Wake up.. Repeat.

  • Fucking good point. Loved this video it was totally not what I was expecting I thought you'd make some analogy about how atheist are aliens or something silly like that. I'm glad I was wrong.

  • Well sure, humanity would be on the verge of extinction... but you have to admit, aliens would be kind of cool.

  • I'm thinking that the unifying influence that an alien invasion might last as long as the invasion itself.

  • I love this and agree.

  • In my country, you are not considered a "finished" professional until you have learn English. Don't get me wrong, we love our language (Spanish), but pragmatism has taught us that learning English opens doors to better learning, better business, better trading, etc. English is the ONLY language spoken by traffic control operators all over the world. And that is a system that is working just fine.

  • I feel a little watchmen, very nice.

  • No everyone would think the aliens were their God,and we would kill each other. The aliens would have to do nothing, but sit back , and watch.

  • You have to understand that none of us are as dumb as all of us....except Kent Hovind and maybe Ray Comfort.

  • @Paetaor Splendid point.

  • Gundam 00 anyone?

  • Of course, the "aliens" are real, representing the real threats currently looming over our species. I would be glad to see all languages go in favor of one that unites us. We must be willing to make sacrifices, to give up things we like. Who cares what we "like" when thousands are starving to death everyday?

  • I would run up to the aliens and ask them to take me with them. lol. When I was watching this, I thought I was high, and then realized it was just the effects you used. XD I've been really getting annoyed with the intense nationalism that a lot of people have.

  • Nah... We're still way far off from a utopian society where everybody is tolerant of one another... The only way to get this kind of result today is manipulation on a global scale... If one person or one group with one goal becomes in control of everything, then they will have the power needed to force change upon the world... Other than that, I see no solution...

  • I agree the world should unite, even without evil aliens. But how?

I don't think a global first language is the solution.

First: who makes the choice? Second: what language?Wars have been fought over less.

Everybody wants to learn English as second language, but forcing it as the first will collide with patriottism, politics and religions of other peoples.

All the E.U. countries, with their similar cultures, still use their own languages.

A global Lingua Franca is even less likely, I fear.

  • Imagining is probably the closest we will ever get to that kind of future.

  • It's a nice ideal, but rich countries would have to agree to share wealth with the poor ones, which is extremely unlikely.

  • The trade-off in the universal language would be that once everybody learns two, some three languages including the international-, mother- and second domestic language, there could be less incentive to learn any other foreign languages. That could lead into deprecation of rare languages. It would be a shame but on the other hand the benefit could be worth it.

  • @CyberBushBush I really don't think it would be that much of a shame. Not anymore than it's a "shame" that people don't get to appreciate sitting around and listening to stories on the radio because of TV's and movies. Things are lost with progress, but it's for the greater good, and to sacrifice the benefits of the future to cling to the traditions of the past is what I consider a real shame.

  • @GrapplingIgnorance Ouch. You of all people should know that in order to understand the history of a culture, you need to understand it's language as well. You could put it stronger by stating that loosing a language == loosing part of the culture == loosing (touch with) history.

The language would not be lost tho .. it would just not be understood often, yet could be learned. But the broad public would have to rely on translated and possibly oppiniated history in that scenario.

  • @PlanetJeroen No. I have little patience for clinging to traditions that only serve to divide the humanity in unnecessary ways. I'm unimpressed by the chants of "It's our history! It's out culture!" So the fuck what? Slavery was a big part of the USA's culture at one point. It was an honored tradition. Oral story telling was also an honored tradition before paper's invention. We didn't stop ourselves from writing because that tradition might become obsolete. It becomes obsolete for a reason.

  • @GrapplingIgnorance I agree. Of course it is very sad to lose any language, the fact that there are barriers caused by language which hinders progress.

  • @GrapplingIgnorance And to be fair, they aren't lost, they are archived.

  • Whether I agree with you or not (and, most of the time, we seem to be of one mind on subjects), I'm always in awe of how eloquently you state your points.

  • @419Films Thanks- I appreciate that sentiment.

  • @419Films I second that. But English being a foreign language to me, an eloquent speech in this language is bound to create an even bigger sense of awe in me. It's a bit like when you're a child: you keep discovering new turn of phrases you had never heard of, it feels impressive that it is possible to express your thoughts in such clever, creative and precise ways, and you feel there is still so much left to discover.

  • I love the way you speak the truth

Your idea is honest and beautiful but it will never happen

    Too many superficial people.

  • People are idiots, and they still wouldnt unite even if the extra terrestrials invaded. My country was invaded and heavily oppressed by the nazis in ww2,yet it didt prevent the freedom fighters to divide into two camps and fight amongst each other as well, just because one group was for monarchy and the other for communism.

  • sad but a great video. regards and have a skilful time. Pinge

  • And all I can think of is...the moment the 'alien threat' abated, power hungry groups would start dividing us up all over again.

  • PART 2 We are facing a real threat now, but it is one that will take multiple decades and fighting large vested interests. We Wont get stuck into tackling the problem until it is too late I fear. I do not fear for myself. I also fear my generation will be referred to ad "that useless bloody mob of fuckwits

    cheers

  • I Love it when you talk Zeitgeist Movement without even saying it. A Resource Based Economy is what we need.

  • he is trying to start the NWO

  • PART 1 It is interesting that you chose an alien invasion a la 1950s B grade movies. One of the weaknesses of democracy is that governments tend to become blind to periods much longer than the election cycle. An invasion can (must) be tackled immediately, building weapons, boosting economy etc. That threat is climate change but we are mired in inertia, and we wont start until it is to late...

  • Sorry to say that there are just too many obstacles against this happening. The USA for starters would just start waving the socialist card. It’s like a termite standing next to a termite hill, he looks up and says “well it can be done” but how the fuck did we create something so massive.

  • Ok let me know if theres a movie out there like this: alien race comes to earth, starts a war. Not to destroy us, but in order for humanity to work together. They strain our survival, to the point that we all need to pull together to survive. Makes us realize our humanity. This alien race also reveals at one point in the movie that they had the same thing happen to them-they were forced to work together to survive an invasion of their own home planet. Interesting moral dilemma eh?

  • @peteheatb3 The Watchman ends like that.

  • @Obsoletemind Refresh?

  • @FederalistFilms I just read your whole exchange with CanOfSoda- wow, back to real conversation now. So it seems you consider yourself an "American" based on the ideals of our constitution? People interpret those in whatever ways support their personal agendas (much like religious text). There are Americans who love the constitution who I have very little in common with (i.e. Ron Paul). I don't consider myself to have too much more in common with someone in Cali than I do with someone in China.

  • As an aspiring linguist, I actually want the diversity of languages to be preserved. I love the various languages, each one has its own beauty and resonates with the proverbs and idioms of a unique culture. I do think that Esperanto should be taught in schools world wide so that we can all communicate with one another, but I don't want the world's language diversity to be lost and forgotten.

  • @Caeruleus000 I never said that other languages need to be obliterated, just that we should focus agree to a global first language. Esperanto is an outrageously backwards concept. Rather than using a language like English which is already functioning as an international language, and teaching it to upcoming generations as a first language, Esperanto creates ANOTHER language just so that everyone has to learn something entirely separate. It's incredibly inefficient.

  • @GrapplingIgnorance Esperanto is "outrageously backwards" because it creates another thing for people to learn? Im sorry, but your comment leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth. What an incredibly self-centered thing to say!

So things are only efficient, if *you* dont have to learn anything new? What do you think english is, to most people in the world, then?

This was my first oppertunity to view one of your videos and you came highly recommended, but you seem to me like sand in the asscrack.

  • @GrapplingIgnorance some people find English hard to learn. That's why Esperanto was created. Also, people don't like English to be of such importance, why not German?French? It's about honor here.A language like Experanto has no other meaning,it's a language for the future not past.As you said, competition, even between languages, will always exist. We have to look for the future not past

  • @schizotypalgrasp So far I have been accused of stealing from Independence Day, The Watchmen, and now Ronald Reagan. None of these were direct inspirations for this video. I'd prefer if people actually address the points made, rather than assume they come strictly from some other source and comment exclusively about that.

  • Kind of off topic , but....

It would be awesome if we did find some alien life. Anyway what you are points out in this video is a common thread that seem to show up in may movies and books. Two people or two groups fights then a bigger threat comes along and the two enemies team up to fight that new threat.
