Why do people think that the 2011 Thing is no good when it plainly feeds into Carpenters The Thing from 82 successfully I bet John Carpenter thinks that the new one is ok.. If u ask me I think that they remembered to put a load of details from the old one into the new one that made them marry up a treat.
This was my first real horror film I`ve seen in the `80s. I guess due to that I`ll never forget it and always deep down in there will be wary of monsters hiding in dogs!
I couldn`t get over the effects- the dog was one, but also the way that man`s head fell off and looked like it was real.
I've nothing but admiration for John Carpenter, a well grounded cynical realist. There are very few people I would want to sit down and have a few beers with but he is one of them. Hearing him wax lyrical gives me such a buzz, a completely brilliant and unassuming man whom the majors looks upon with utter disdain, at least that's the impression I get. The Thing bombed simply because people were too busy phoning home. It remains the greatest sci fi horror film of ALL time!
I don't see how the original 1951 thing is scary. It looks like a carrot and I was not scared at all. I saw it when I was young and then I saw the 82 Thing and the 82 Thing is scary. The 82 thing makes you think, while the 51 thing is just straight forward..
@Jtoneloc Yup, supposed to be some time next year. I just hope it's in the Norse tongue w/ subtitles and they use some old school animitronics and makeup w/ the comp fx. Otherwise, I'm afraid it'll not mesh w/ the old 80's film. I also hope they explain the corpse at the radio station in the Norge base.
That's amazing.. Yeah If they don't use the animitronics it wont be the same..I couldn't imagin the prequel without that 80's look and feel either..if they did that it'd be SPOT on.
I remember coming across this post on another The Thing-related video about how Hollywood is planning to update this John Carpenter classic with a "hip, young cast". I ended up killing a few old ladies and a coupla kids in the neighborhood to calm down my nerves afterwards.
I remember when it came out in 1982 all the critics hating it. I remember one particular critique was that all the men acted the same, and no "one" personality stood out. That all the actors were like carbon copies of eath other with bland personalities.
not only is it pointless trying to remake or better it, bill lancaster's script adaptation of the story worked SO well, there's almost nowhere left to go when the movie ends. I'm sure universal would have had a sequel out of it, if there was anyone alive who could make the story go anywhere, but without elements that you cant now repeat, (unless you do "remake" it) - it would be just another virus/monster running wild movie. checkmate. no sequels. perfection
@Johnlindsey289 ? Is there something wrong with your reading comprehension? I never said anything was a remake? I said it would be pointless trying to remake Thing '82, or try and better it, especially from the point of view of how the original story came to a deliberate and abiguous dead-end street.
Furthermore, I wrote the comment in exclusive reference to Thing '82 cause, as I wrote it over a year ago, Thing 2011 had not even started principal shooting, let alone been announced to anyone.
@Johnlindsey289 I also speculated that, due to the brilliance of the original story's checkmate, an effective sequel is almost impossible to take *from that point* - and it turns out I was right.
By taking the story to prequel, and if it does well, Universal have the opportunity to take the story to sequel, by just swerving around the ending in Thing '82 and using Thing '11 to take the storyline elsewhere.
So don't try and burn *me* - put those torches on the floor and back off. WAY off...
@Johnlindsey289 oh? your sure when you don't even know if the movie is any damn good? or how much it cost to make?
one of the reasons Thing 82 was a "flop" was because it was released up against Speilberg's version of an alien story, that just happened to have the same distributor, one Universal Pictures. Maybe somebody upset somebody cause Thing 82 got no marketing priority - I'm almost surprised they released it at all.
I dont think there's certainty in anything until we see the product.
@Johnlindsey289 true it did not do well when it was released in 1982,,because of ET..but later on VHS it turn to be a huge hit..people cried and said WTF this is a great film..
Sadly, this classic and very good horror film, is being remade. Why these new directors are finding the need to remake horror films that are already perfect, is stupid! The new version will have a complete teenaged cast complete with a girl who is tougher than all of the guys and she most likely will be capable of doing Karate moves better than Trinity from, The Matrix. All horror film remakes in the past 8 years have flopped except for, The Hills Have Eyes.
I suppose it would be too obvious to call a motion picture set in the Antarctic as 'chilling' but it is indeed a deeply unpleasant, disturbing story and one I would prefer not to see again if at all possible. I saw 'The Thing' in 1952 and didn't much enjoy the original either. I much preferred 'The Mole People'. Incidentally what exactly is a 'bad ass'?' A a mule with behavioural problems?

Re-Makes are not usually good but Carpentar's version outdid the first! The new 2011 Thing sucks.

Good thing nobody cares about your opinion, because The Thing is considered to be one of the best (if not THE best) alien-horror movies of all time.

No not a remake but a prequel, they wouldn't re-do it again because you are aware this masterpiece was a remake of 1951's Sci-fi movie

I'm sure the prequel will make money opening day since the original was a flop at the box-office

This movie has yet to be surpassed in my opinion. Everything works in such a disturbing manner from the atmosphere to the effects. Truly a classic.
