  • Steven Hill has no clue about economics, and is completely against the values of the founding fathers. And the question of immigration is no longer the same as it was in Europe because of the draconian rules on employment by the European Union. After one or two years, it is very difficult for an employer to fire people, so they are hesitant to hire an immigrant. This keeps the immigrant in poverty. Also a problem is the unwillingness to learn German by Turkish immigrants, and ditto elsewhere.

  • i dont think the english want her back

  • And to that situation of people complaining about the state in Europe, come on, we complain about everything!!! And the French!? They're even worse than the average European (also that's why they enjoy longer holidays and work 35 hours a week, cursed French!)

  • I'm European and, sincerely, I picture myself more on the first view of what Europe is. When it comes to debating our University system, it is true it isn't the best in the world, in general, but also it is evaluated according to anglo-saxon standards, not continental standards, and we Europeans tend to mobility. We attend US universities the same way we attend any other european university. I'm Portuguese, but study in a Spanish university, e.g.

  • For all politicians talk about how "small business is the job-growth machine" and how much entrepreneurial spirit there is in America, the fact remains that EUROPE has much more small business ownership than here. Look it up if you don't believe me. The workers have a much greater say in how their companies are run, something Americans can only DREAM OF in this age of hypercapitalism, speculation gone wild, and greedy shareholders asking for MORE AND MORE profits from big business.

  • Hill's book is a much-needed tome that adds an important pro-European side to this debate. All we ever hear in the states is bashing of Europe, esp. their economic and political systems. There are few, esp. in government, who openly praise Europe's ways and their welfare state. It's about time someone debunk all the myths that we constantly hear from the political Right in this country and give us the REAL FACTS. She cites the fact that less Americans wanna emigrate to Europe. However...

  • I think this may just be because most Americans don't realize how badly they're getting shafted and/or they are being fed too much propaganda about how "bad" things are in Europe. And too many immigrants from abroad believe the propaganda about America being SO FREE and this nonsense about some mythical "American dream."

  • 9) "you can get rich here" he drives a cab but in 2 years he could get be doing some business on Ebay and get really rich.... NOOoooooooooooo, really??? And one couldn't in Europe???? Cause America is the "land of opportunity". Aha, and Europe ain't???

The simplicity of these arguments. Simply STUNNING! Ah well. enough ranting, but this should be a counterweight against that Hill guy? AMAZING! It's so poor and sad it's funny......... it's a joke........ a bad joke.

  • @Efteling4Ever Of course Europe isn't. We don't have internet here! And also Ebay is strictly american and we're just a bunch of peasants. And what's more, we just ride bikes and walk because we can't afford fuel. Now, allow me to park my carriage and give the horse some water to drink. LOL

  • 8) We have small cars? Well, Hummers don't really fit into cramp medieval city centers. "They don't make as many trips". Really? Why not? Most Europeans do everything by car, although there are perfect public transport systems. They can simply pay the gas prices. "and it's a disadvantage not being able to use the car". Whose is not able to use the car? Those Europeans that nearly all have two cars? "There aren't as many parking spaces either" BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. OMG, AMAZING. Simply STUNNING.

  • America would be looking after the military interests of Europe. No! Europe doesn't need the US at all. Simple truth.

America CHOOSES to have military bases in europe for no reason, to invade countries Europe considers no serious threat and in a way Europe considers a total waste of money, resources and lives, and to pretend Europe doesn't have a military of its own whereas it has a huge military and 2 nuclear powers.

Noone forces the US to have a huge military budget. It their own choice.

  • 5) As if germans wouldn't want to attend their own universities..... lol. As for the influx, yes, many European countries enable students to go abroad for 1 year with a small grant, so they will use the opportunity to experience foreign countries.

    6) Many people opt out of free insurance and take private insurance instead....? Huh? Uuuuuuhhh, who on earth, apart from those so rich they do not qualify for free insurance, would do that?

  • 3) Less income due to taxes? No, cause these taxes result in benefits one would have to pay for in the US. Does she really think Europeans don't have the same material goods as Americans....? We would wouldn't cause we buy a lot of "gadgets" in the US. Sure we do, you would too if you would be walking with Euros in your pockets through dollar country.

    4) Europeans leaving for the US....? Which ones? No offense, but most Europeans consider the US a step backwards. They'd never go there.

  • 1) Low fertility rates....? uhhhhh, well yeah less teenagers get knocked up, I guess, and apparently there's no desire for busloads of kids among prosperous people. It is typical for societies that do WELL that they take less kids.

    2) Less women work? ..... uuuhhh Nearly all women work. It common in Europe for both partners to have a job.

  • One of the differences between America and Europe is our Social Insurance programs. America has a Safety Net thats designed to help people who are down. Europe has a Welfare State that subsidizes people indefinitely when their down.

  • @FRSFreeStateES You are soooo wrong about Europe's "welfare".

To subsidise indefinitely? My ass. European "welfare" is meant ONLY to keep e.g. unemployed people afloat. In e.g. Germany one has to apply for jobs over and over again, PROVE one did, the state doesn't provide one with serious cash but pays rent, heating, gas (so you can apply for jobs with your car) and food only if one hands in receipts, actively searches for jobs and one has to accept ANY job as soon as one's found.

  • @Efteling4Ever

Can unemployed germans get Unemployment Insurance indefinitely or are there time limits?

  • @FRSFreeStateES Yes and no. There is no time limit as long as you are unemployed (can't let one die from starvation, can we?), in principle (during which one gets very little cash; only certain receipts are paid for), but as they will actively find you a job, any job, and one cannot refuse a job, it won't last long. So in principle there are no limits but in practice there are.

  • @Efteling4Ever

Well then thanks for your honesty and proving my point about indefinite Government Subsidization in Europe. As compared with America wher people are expected to go back to work.

  • @FRSFreeStateES Your point is not proven. Germany supports a tiny minority only that for whatever reasons can never find a job anymore. This has no economic impact. But for 99% of healthy people spending only lasts until a job's been found, which, as said, is rather soon as one cannot refuse any job. But if you believe that supporting a tiny minority that has no hopes anymore (what would the alternative be? Let them rot to die on your sidewalks?) is a bad thing, I prefer my country any time!

  • @Efteling4Ever

I said Germany subsidizes people indefinitely. I didn't say they subsidize everyone indefinitely. And they do so my point is proven. I wasn't arguing whether it was good policy or not.

  • Commies with power ties.

This movement is a joke. At the very end, you will be giving 1/2 your income to the govt.

btw, 1/2 the population in Europe will be muslim in 50 years - by birthrate. Look it up.

  • The arguments for Europe are well presented and nicely put.

The women is spouting two things: Bravado and TAXTAXTAXTAXTAXTAXTAXTAXTAX.

    :/

  • You are allowed to work more in the EU... really-_- That woman is talking bullshite

  • The woman says she is european... but she was English... and they have almost the same system as the USA... Britain doesnt really have the welfare system that most of the rest of Europe has...

  • @Lolloy100 huh?

  • ...that's not a bad thing either. We can then concentrate on those things we'd rather do rather than what we have to in order to survive. With everyone working less, they can be sharp and we can get a better rate or return per unit of work from each person. You can work long OR you can work hard, you can't do both w/o rapid descending into overworking thus resulting in severely comprimising physical and psychological health.

  • All 'social capitalism' is, is a transitional system. I think it is better than the current model but eventually - because of technological unemployment (in addition to frictional & structural) - it will be replaced. The monetary system is obsolete. All of our traditional institutions are evolving (one could say crumbling) rapidly and eventually we will transition from a labor base to a technological base where machines replace human labor.

  • the women is a typical example of someone brainwashed into thinking everything is better in the united states... she says europeans want to move to the united states, this is simply untrue.. we live a very happy life here. i know few people who are thinking of moving outside europe.. maybe a few, but that's global

  • Europe is far more intelligent than America. Their governments are more intelligent, their leaders are more intelligent, their people are better-educated and thus more intelligent than Americans. I'm sick of the American way - it doesn't work ,and our arrogance at thinking that our way is the only and best way is what is destroying this country.

  • the lady has some good points, however, the european model(s) are better for the colective and i for one don't want to live in an individualistic and selfish society so i will contend with my socialist capitalism way.

good luck to America in finding solutions for their problems,we ain't exactly a role model either.

  • Funny that she comes up with the anecdote from the taxi driver when he just said that in reality Europe has more social mobility.

  • america already operates a corporate/socialist system. it is not capitalism.

  • You can work over 48 hours, if you own your own business. This creepy woman wants us to work and not have holydays. Capitalistic communism, if you ask me.

  • I'd say a mix would work better. American optimism and opportunity combined with social security and safe banking.

One way or another both Europe and America are going to change. Let's change it into a better, more fair, western world. So we can compete with Asia and the rest of the world.

  • A european praising america and an american praising europe, fun debate.
