There is no "real" way of Travis Picking. Merle started it but played totally different to Chet who played totally different to Jerry Reed. As for playing with 3 fingers and thumb Pat Kirtley is a magician at Travis Picking with that technique. Forget the rules, there are no rules.
If you do a search on google and youtube you will find many people who disagree with your strict definition. There are variations of Travis Picking that use more than "two fingers". . Search Youtube for the following videos: "Travis Picking 101" "Travis Picking Demo" "Paul Pigat - Travis Picking Guitar" "Fingerpicking Lesson #3 - Travis Style Picking" "Acoustic Guitar Lessons Travis Picking Tan included" ... . Also, can you send me a link demonstrating/explaining "classic fingerpicking"?

The following is how youtuber Demonchrmr responded to the same type of comment:
"OK, look. Merle Travis only used his thumb and one finger for the most part. Chet used a thumb pick and 2-3 fingers, same with Jerry Reed. CLiff Gallup used a thumb pick with 2 finger picks. Setzer- thumb and 1 finger. It's all considered Travis Picking. Whether or not you call it hybrid, nashville claw, banjo claw, or sloppy rockabilly, it all amounts to the same thing. Now shut up and play!"
@GCarterGuitar Sorry but I totally disagree the "shut up and play" philosophy. How do you say: "give the devil (his due)". Playing chet atkins' or many fingerpicking's tunes with Travis Picking ( 2 fingers), is more difficult or nearly impossible than with classic fingerpicking (meant as thumb + 3 fingers). I want to say: try to learn a tune firstly with 4 fingers, then play the same tune with 2 fingers. ;-) and When I search on google "travispicking" I wish find Merle Travis, not Tommy Emmanuel
You really didn't address my responses. You just pointed out that playing with 2 fingers is more difficult, and is therefore the only form of Travis picking. That is a non sequitur.
Besides, I was classically trained and I am not about to revert back to playing with 2 fingers just so I can match your less efficient version of TP.
You still have to address why there is such a large number of guitarists who disagree with your strict definition.
@GCarterGuitar You are right to not reverting back, absolutely, but I'm very interested in the less efficient version of TP, because I want to discover how he could play many tunes with only two fingers, so if I search TP I mean two fingers, I wanna see covers played with two fingers, not 4. If a large number of guitarists think that boom-chick and its variations are anyway travispicking, they are free
Its fine that you are interested in 2 finger travis picking arrangements, but I must remind you that you came to this video and tried to correct me with your strict definition.
Fortunately, most guitarists aren't as pedantic as you are.
Not many pickers take time like you did to put the music with the instructions. This was nice of you to do. TY
