Play the octaves in the beginning (SAME NOTES THOUGH) one string lower... (So starting with 2x5). It gives it more that sitar sound.. Atleast with my guitar it does!

Its basically about technique, not only it looks much more beautiful the movement when only two fingers are holding the pick, but also it is much better for getting the harmonics nice and clear. Also the tapping needs to be done with the middle finger, so holding it with two fingers makes the transition much easier.
