  • And now Twitter censors itself voluntarily to drum up business in China and Egypt. Rapid slide indeed.

  • It is so amazing that this game, and the concepts it explores, is still relevant 13 years after coming out.

  • They just shut down megaupload...the day after the biggest protest on the internet to stop that kind of thing. The U.S. government just slapped us in the face with their dicks.

  • STOP SOPA AND PIPA

  • Sid Meier is amazing.

  • It's hard not to see this and think of SOPA. Some people really are dreaming themselves our masters right now.

  • Now understand this: this video is from 1999! No crisis, No terrorism doctrine. Yet, it predicts everything. The thing is, it actually doesn't predicts anything, it says something that will be always true. This is the true genius behind this game - using the brightest ideas of our world and packing them together in very natural way.

  • SOPA

  • @FuryFlurry1 DAMN u beat me too it lol. I just realized this today this is the perfect anti SOPA ad ever.

  • @FuryFlurry1

My first recation as well. Just instantly thought of this, was hoping I could figgure out how to link it to Total Biscuit's video :P

  • [ Thanks to Obama's initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened. ]

    That's a solid statement - no "visions".

Didn't you take reading comprehension in school? Did... you go to school?

  • @Xan81

That is just a general claim. It doesn't actually list any specific achievement. It just says they like what he is doing. Btw he was nominated 12 days after he got into office.

  • @evan13579b Then that means he worked damned hard and quickly.

  • @Xan81

Yes, you must assume that lol.

  • "Beware he who would deny you access to information, because in his heart he dreams himself your master" --brilliant!

  • Ah though of this hearing the SOPA debate.

  • Beware of SOPA.

  • stupid fucking sopa.

  • This is now officially one of my favorite quotes. Sid Meier saw the future when he made this. What a game.

  • This game is scary, how accurate it is. I feel like it's predicting the future, even though it was made over 10 years ago

  • @masqism Unfortunately, we are nowhere close to be able to launch colonists to another world, so we have to live through peaceful protestors getting flashbangs shot at their heads by militant police forces in the freaking US!

  • A good response to the Protect IP Act.

  • lol I love it when I'm tired and I construct a sentence only to forget to grammatically end it and I look like a retard :D

  • This sounds about right.

  • Anyone able to upload the high res original somewhere ?

  • I have uploaded a video of the faction that would prevent all these negative things to happen: Alpha Centauri - Domai Free Drones Theme Music

Please have a look and thumb up if you think that Domai is the best leader to follow on Alpha Centauri.

  • @gianluca1870

How about no. I don't thumbs up youtube comment whores

  • @Skinnyoompalumpa then you have never thumbed up your mother

  • If you've played SMAC, you'd know better than to listen to Lal preach about tyranny. He's an evil bastard.

  • Vagina + Boobs

    BANNED BY THE UNITED STATES.

  • freedom by unity ? how does that work? unity is coming togeter for a goal. but if everybody want freedom everone want a difrant sort of freedom (what they want too do and alow other too do) so there cant be unity!

humans and humanty has far too much of a me befor you. us befor them kind of thinking going on. be it on a famely level. comunity level or county level

for true unity there would have too be a singel thing everybody would be strifing for!!

  • @deathwatch1980 Trancendence?

  • @Tzilandi would you want that? not sure i would want that! eternal everlasting live sound like a total bore fest too me, but maybe thats me

  • can someone say Lulzsec?

  • I find this clip to be prophetic. Just look what the freeflow of information did in Egypt.

  • Looks like Sid Meyer was about 12 years off.

Whatever. This video is prophetic... the world is currently turning inside-out due to the Free-Flow of information. Here we now find ourselves, liberating nations through social networking and spreading our stories of oppression throughout the world as fast as light.

The world is sick. Sick of injustice, sick of squabbling politicians and bureaucrats, sick of lies and deception.

The People have a voice, now.

    Keep the Internet Neutral!

  • Why did they get Dr Evil to narrate this scene?

  • We Americans are learning very painfully right now!

  • i always build this both to deny it to other factions as well as reap a few techs i'm generally to lazy to research myself!

    And i play UoP..

  • Well shiiiiiiit. So how do I get a seat on the Unity?

  • @Ratama Seconded. How much for a one-way ticket to Chiron?

  • Didn't Wikileaks claim to have some kind of huge bank industry thing? That's the kind of shit that's necessary to know, because we all deal with banks and spent our money bailing them out. Not what some diplomat thinks of the Ukranian embassy's decor. And certainly not a list of 'sensitive targets'... clearly not sharing that list means we live in a dictatorship.

Just goes to prove how stupid 'internet activists' really are. You people are just a different kind of sheep, but sheep all the same.

  • If Wikileaks was leaking things like 'Oh hey turns out the CIA killed JFK', you might have a point.

Classified information is classified because the ONLY purpose in unauthorized disclosure is to damage security. How exactly do battle plans, military secrets, and worldwide assets the US considers vital to their economy serve to promote "freedom" by way of knowledge?

Look at WW2 - OPSEC leaks killed a ton of people because of retards like wikileaks supporters.

  • Nobody even gives a shit about Wikileaks anymore because they're not leaking information that actually matters to the public. Military and diplomatic files should remain classified until it's no longer necessary to do so.

  • @Frostiken And who, exactly, gets to decide when it's "no longer necessary"? And what makes you think their motives will be pure?

  • @Frostiken, In the present, information leaks may cause negative reactions in the world. But in the future it's a different story. War is about secrecy and when that secrecy disappears, it's almost impossible to wage war against anyone. When everyone watches everyone, no armies can be amassed without anyone knowing. In the long run, peace on earth is achieved through transparency. Free flow of information will make war obsolete.

  • @DecepticonLeader "Free flow of information will make war obsolete." Very true. The Iraq war would have never happened if the information that all the 'intelligence' used to justify the war was fabricated. We have wikileaks and others to do that after the fact now. Too little - too late perhaps.

  • @RiseofMarine unfortunately there is just too much information. too many facts and facet, ambiguous. it must be simplified and wholed. but the traditional arbiters of this in america, the news media, have failed as a whole and given into corruption and agenda. and our democracy is lessened to the point of being irrelevant.

  • @DecepticonLeader Well said!

  • This, is why for instance, Egypt just shut down it's internet, and why there are internet killswitches. Better make sure to be prepared for the worst.

Awesome game, one of my very favorites.

  • 1 person promotes censorship.

  • More like planetary WIKILEAKS amirite guys?

  • @freshasdida I'd disagree with that, chief. I'd say Wikileaks is our Planetary Datalinks.

  • @freshasdida No idea what "amirite" means.... sounds like a mix of "am i right" - which, given the parlance of our times, is not unlikely (ala "Ohbummer" for "Obama"). Mixing words like that, though confuses and distracts from any point you were trying to make....

  • Wikileaks!!

  • Free Assange!! Release WikiLeaks from its shackles!

  • Apparently Julian Assange forgot to play this game.

  • Comment removed

  • @Urdalibertine

he's actually living what you have been playing

  • @vihorsthename

    We're all living it.

  • wikileaks

  • This suddenly feels prophetic again.

  • We are living in his quote now about America

  • Anyone that wants to see a Alpha Centauri 2 show go to the 2k games techincal support page and report a problem and say "MAKE ALPHA CENTAURI 2! DO IT!" If enough people do it they will have to notice.

  • @lichking665 They should do it with the CivV engine since it's out. Do it like how Colonization got it's remake. :D

  • what happened to america...

  • @moksheebs according to this game's timeline, USA fragmented somewhere between the launch of the UNSS Unity and the beginning of the 21 century :s

  • @woodwyrm ouch...

  • @moksheebs were seeing it now

  • @rotccadet2010 you are too right man.

  • Agreed Yootoobnewbie, well written.

that leaves us only with our own safeguards. as it should be. long as we examine data and take things with a pinch of salt we will generally be fine.

  • you know.. about the discussion on free flow of information .. It is ireelevant if the information is biased. every single person will not be influenced and what hapens is debates. if you choose to belive one set of information and not another, it is your choice afterall.. But you had the choice to make that choice to start with Because of Free flow of information. Besides.. ALL data is biased one way or the other. one have to pick the parts that sound most true and examine.

  • But the free flow of information will let you see both sides of the story and you can make an educated choice instead of being forced to believe what the state wants you to think.

  • To use the example of FOX News, they do give information but they are selective because they want people to follow their own narrative..

There is no free flow of information because it is controlled by vested interests. Not just governments but media conglomerates, also.

I suppose the internet is as close as it can become but even here there are forces at work trying to restrict us. China's giant firewall, for example.

  • i think this argument proves the world needs more alpha centauri players :)

  • Amen to That. I'll always be for the Spartans though.

  • Yes, we should abolish our traditional nations and begin to be divided by ideology ;)

  • @Selinja we ARE divided by ideology. That is why this world is shit. The People should not be "divided" by anything - the People should be United - that is the only way that we can attain true freedom.

  • @Xan81 - Which real-life counterparts exist to the Factions? Which country is the utopia of Militarists, Christians, Scientists, Capitalists, Environmentalists, Collectivist or Humanitarians? Sure, some societes tend a bit towards one or another Faction, but their members are very far away from being ideologically unified.

And total unification? Succumbing to the absolute reign of militarists, crusaders, technocrats, eco-terrorists, communists or bureaucrats? Ask the dissenters about freedom ;)

  • @Xan81 Is it really true that we should all be united under one ideology, or is that just an uncriticised assumption we've adopted because the opposite extreme is so ugly?

What a disgusting mish-mash between common sense and stupidity that unity would be. Or maybe we'd all be forced to adhere to some super-Rational nonesense?

I'm free. And seek no unity is insane people :D

  • @LordShivasServant A perfect world would /not/ be controlled by one person. Something similar to parliament would be necessary.

  • @Xan81 -_- Yeah.... ONE parliament... do you not see the inherent flaw in that? Or have you been successfully brainwashed to think we must "all be watched over by machines of loving grace" (as one technotopian once said). Because if ONE parliament were to rule the diversity that is 7 billion people, 7 billion unique passions, in 218 countries. I know your one-world ideology is popular and it gets you laid, but THINK.

  • @LordShivasServant One parliament vs. one "President".

I'll take a panel of many voices over a panel of one voice any day.

Single-Leader Politics are as archaic as they are useless.

Obviously, any level-headed person would know that a parliament is pretty much a senate without a Caesar. And just like a senate, the number of "seats" are determined by the population.

This planet cannot sustain itself as an archipelago of nations. War will ravage it to nothing before real progress can be made.

  • @Xan81 So, what are you saying? Because I live in Canada, and barring what happened over the prior few elections we elect a dictatorship every 4 - 5 years. You might not always like what happens but at least we get stuff done, every parliament is the same, unless, like Italy, you can't form a cohesive government at any time.

In the US, after the Clinton Impeachment, the acrimony in politics, nothing gets done, and corruption reigns supreme.

  • @viperswhip I agree with the 2nd part.

But you forget that Canada is under Imperial control - the archaic British Crown.

We were once under the control of the Crown, but we fought and achieved independence.

Canada should do the same and break away from Imperialism and declare /real/ independence. :)

    Cheers.

    [ Government Constitutional monarchy,

Federal parliamentary representative democracy - Monarch Elizabeth II - Governor General David Johnston - Prime Minister Stephen Harper ]

  • @Xan81 No, lol you mistook me. I like the Parliamentary system. It is far more mobile. Didn't Aristotle think benevolent dictators make the best leaders?

I think the only hope for the US is to elect Ron Paul and for him to declare a military dictatorship. He would be the first true libertarian dictator :) He would let people out of jail instead of putting them in at least.

  • @viperswhip I agree that, barring the incumbent, Paul is our best bet. Unfortunately, he's still branding himself a Republican rather than what he is, a Libertarian; and therefore showing that he doesn't quite have the "balls" to lead a headstrong nation like the United States. (opinion)

  • @Xan81 The thing is, he is a Founding Father type of Republican. Small government, personal freedom, fiscal conservative. Unfortunately in a two party system the fiscal conservatives got lumped together social conservatives. He can't go Democratic because barring really good times they are shit with the economy and sometimes are a little to socialist, which Paul is not. So, he is stuck with Republican and trying to remind Americans what Republican used to mean.

  • @viperswhip At any rate, I find it sickening that we are about to trade a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate for a creature like Romney or Gingrich.

This may cause an influx of immigrants into Canada, too.

  • @Xan81

Hahaha, nobel peace prize laureate. You are such a joke.

  • @evan13579b Explain.

Oh, wait lemme guess - it's either about Obama's Nobel Prize, his Birth Certificate or his "Race"...

    Come on, let's have it

  • @Xan81

So why the fuck would you believe it was about anything other than his "Nobel".

You know he did absolutely nothing to earn it don't you? It is embarrassing to even mention it, and it is a sign of abject stupidity. Basically he was given it because he shares the political beliefs of those who run the committee to convince stupid people that he is amazing. Congratulations. You are stupid.

  • @Xan81

Additionally. It is shameful and inhumane to give credibility to a "prize" given to Obama over so many people who may have actually deserved it. You know, people who risked their lives or livelihood for peace.

  • @evan13579b He was their leader, duh. "Commander-In-Chief".

Are you going to give such an award to each soldier? No - that's why they have medals that only soldiers can have - and they only go to exceptional soldiers /or their leaders/.

  • @Xan81

Uhhh. What? I wasn't recommending giving the peace prize to the anyone in the armed forces you absurdly retarded freak.

  • @evan13579b How come all Republicans resort to mud-slinging?

It's almost like they don't have anything interesting to say, so they draw attention by being dramatic...

  • @Xan81

You are a child. Obvious stupidity is obvious. This isn't mud-slinging. I'm just pointing this out for you. Anyone reading this would have to agree that you are incredibly stupid.

  • @evan13579b But I thought you liked Executive Order 13579b. Poor stupid dude.. :P

    [ (b) Executive Order 13563 of January 18, 2011, ‘‘Improving Regulation

and Regulatory Review,’’ directed to executive agencies, was meant to

produce a regulatory system that protects ‘‘public health, welfare, safety,

and our environment while promoting economic growth, innovation, competitiveness, and job creation.’’ Independent regulatory agencies, no less

than executive agencies, should promote that goal. ]

  • @Xan81

Ya I love executive order 13579. That is why I made this account in 2007. How is it possible to be as stupid as you are?

  • @evan13579b I was just pointing out your ignorance to law-making and government. :)

  • @Xan81

It is ignorant to have an id that has a number in it equal to an executive order made in the future. Wow.

  • @evan13579b (Executive Order 13579 of July 11, 2011, shown below)

You shouldn't give yourself a pseudonym that is axiomatically different from your personal ethics.

That is some powerful ignorance you sustain, there.

  • @Xan81

Its hard to avoid making a name that contains that order when that order didn't exist when I made this name. You fucking moron.

  • @evan13579b Is the name thing seriously the only rebuttal you can come up with? Obama's achievements, American Imperialism...

and you can only defend your pseudonym?

  • @Xan81

What did that executive order have to do with eligibility for a Nobel Prize?

Oh of course presidents can sign executive orders. How are they accomplishments? You are pathetic.

  • Comment removed

  • @evan13579b SECOND POINT: You claim that Obama accomplished nothing; yet, when I present you with a list of Obama's accomplishments, you're altogether dumb-struck ("dumb" meaning silenced).

  • @Xan81

When people say someone has accomplished nothing they obviously mean accomplished very little.

  • @Xan81

And in that context he accomplished nothing deserving of a Nobel Peace Prize idiot.

  • @evan13579b THIRD POINT: It was the Norwegians that awarded Obama with the Nobel Prize.

To discredit Obama's winning the Prize discredits ALL the past Nobel laureates.

Any 10-year old with a 3-year-old's intellect can find the details on that Prize through Google - I'm sure you'll take only slightly longer to find it.

  • @Xan81

Why would it matter which nations people awarded that too him?

It isn't the pointing out of how stupid it was to grant him it that discredits the other people who have received it. It is the act of awarding it.

Imagine if Hitler received the Nobel Peace Prize. If I say he didn't deserve it would you say that I am discrediting the other people who received it or would you say the Nobel committee was? Moron.

  • @evan13579b You're.. dumb... Hitler wouldn't win the prize for Peace - he might, though, have won a prize in Science.

But the Nobel foundation wouldn't have awarded it to him because he was evil. /shrug

So what are you talking about?

  • @Xan81

I was making a hypothetical to prove that you are an idiot. That is all.

  • @evan13579b lol but you use the absolute _worst_ example and focus?

I think that if you were trying to "prove that [I am] an idiot", that pursuit backfired in your face...

Try again - I'm intrigued as to how Obama doesn't deserve to be along-side other Nobel Peace Prize laureates...

  • @Xan81

Because he didn't accomplish anything deserving of it retard.

I used Hitler as an example because even you would have to say that if he got the prize he didn't deserve it. Its hard to predict how stupid you will be.

  • @evan13579b My point is simply that the Nobel foundation wouldn't have qualified Hitler for any prize or award.

was an Austrian-born German politician and the leader of the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (NSDAP), commonly referred to as the Nazi Party. He was chancellor of Germany from 1933 to 1945, and dictator of Nazi Germany (as Führer und Reichskanzler) from 1934 to 1945. Hitler is commonly associated with the rise of fascism in Europe, World War II, and the Holocaust.

  • @Xan81

Yes, thanks for looking it up on Wikipedia for me. I already knew that but hey, he is your Nobel Peace Prize candidate.

  • @evan13579b uhh YOU are the one trying to rationalize Hitler's nomination...

  • @Xan81

You are the one who said all that should be required is for a leader of a powerful country to not start a war. Hitler didn't start a war in the first year so you believe he deserved a Nobel Peace Prize.

  • @evan13579b Again, look up why Obama was so deserving, and compare it with Hitler's politics.

  • @Xan81

Look, you are the one who said the only thing one needs to do to deserve it is not start a war. Are you taking that back?

  • @evan13579b No - that's just how you perceived it (probably due to your prejudice against Obama and your kinship to Hitler).

  • @Xan81

You specifically said that all one needed to do was not start a war.

  • @evan13579b really.

  • @Xan81

Naw, I haven't changed my tune.

  • @evan13579b Obviously.

  • @Xan81

So has your mom not taught you about hypotheticals yet? Maybe you can look that up?

  • @evan13579b Didn't I use "hypotheticals"? Or did you miss that part of the discussion?

  • @Xan81

You ignored that I was using Hitler getting a Nobel Peace Prize as a hypothetical.

Even when I used "under your logic" you claimed it was I who wanted him to get one.

  • @evan13579b But why would you use the absolute /worse/ example for your "hypothetical"? You could have used Fidel Castro, or Stalin - but you chose who I'm assuming is your hero, Adolph Hitler.

  • @Xan81

What? Obviously I use Hitler because everyone hates Hitler. If I used Castro you might have said he did actually deserve it. The whole point is obviously to bring up someone who obviously didn't deserve it, to show why your logic was stupid.

  • @evan13579b But you couldn't find someone a "little evil", with some obscure reason for winning a prize... but you chose someone that /wouldn't/ have won.

Are you attempting to use "reductio ad absurdum"?

  • @Xan81

There's nothing wrong with using the most extreme example available. Holy shit. You must think only satanists play the "Devil's Advocate" to prove a point.

  • @evan13579b Except when you drop important aspects of the argument against which you're debating - such as ending Bush's wars (a temporal detail - but very important).

  • @Xan81

I was just fighting one stupid point. You at one point said that all that is required it to not start a war. You should have admitted that was stupid and moved on.

  • @evan13579b I included that annoying little temporal detail which renders your point moot.

  • @evan13579b And, obviously "everybody" doesn't hate Hitler...

    You don't, for one...

  • @Xan81

Oh, I like Hitler? How did you come to that conclusion?

  • @evan13579b Because you're fighting for the possibility that Nobel would every nominate him.

    That's pretty strong support.

  • @Xan81

"under your logic". That means I am accusing your logic of being an argument in favor of his receiving the prize.

    I don't hold your logic.

  • @evan13579b But YOU were the one that misconstrued my "logic" and adapted it into your own - and in support of your nomination of Hitler for a Nobel Prize.

  • @Xan81

You specifically said that all that is required it to not start a war. You deny you said that?

  • @evan13579b Nope - I reiterated it, verbatim to show you how you've omitted important details.

  • @Xan81

    Which details?

  • @evan13579b "...ending Bush's war(S!)."

  • @Xan81

You never specifically came out and said no that is not enough.

You did add more things Obama supposedly did later but you never admitted that that was stupid to say in the first place.

  • @Xan81

And which wars did Obama end and when did he end them?

  • @evan13579b Well, I'm not sure! Looks like the CONTEXT has trumped your entire argument, as Obama won the award for reasons other than "ending a war".

Oh, but I think I clarified that point, as well using Nobel's reason for awarding Obama.

  • @Xan81

Right, you quoted what was said to justify the award by the committee. So basically they could have said that he invented the peace-mobile and you would have posted that as proof of his deservedness. You didn't mention anything he actually did to deserve it.

  • @evan13579b ... correct me if I'm wrong, but are you under the assumption that I'm affiliated with the decision-making over at Nobel?

  • @Xan81

Uh, no, when did I imply you were?

  • @evan13579b By asserting to me that Obama didn't deserve it, and trying to engage me on that decision [by Nobel].

  • @Xan81

You were defending that decision. So I assumed you had some reason other than "they are awesome people so they are right whoever they award it to.

  • @evan13579b Yes - I am going by the esteem of other Nobel Laureates.

What is your reason for suspecting that they are all frauds?

  • @Xan81

Why would I be calling all of them frauds if I call one of them undeserving?

  • @Xan81

I never said I accepted that argument so how can you consider it now my own?

  • @evan13579b You accepted it enough to attempt a rebuttal. Had you rejected its premise, we wouldn't be having this conversation because I would have clarified my point (which, I actually did; as it turns out).

You're still fighting to defend why you are defending Hitler.

  • @Xan81

I accepted that you were dumb enough to think it. Just as you are dumb enough to claim that I am defending Hitler.

  • @evan13579b k now you've reduced yourself to prepubescence. I have to... clip my toenails - much more important than watching your squabbling and pandering.

  • @Xan81

Oh come on. Which wars were ended and when were they ended?

  • @Xan81

We pulled our troops out of Afghanistan when?

We pulled our troops out of Iraq when?

    We attacked Libya when?

  • @evan13579b argument is obsolete.

  • @Xan81

Then stop arguing. No one forced you to. Just because you can't mention a single thing he did to deserve the prize doesn't mean anything!

  • @evan13579b He does deserve it - otherwise you would be discrediting all Nobel Laureates. I thought I've said this, before.

  • @Xan81

So are you assuming they would never ever make an error or do things for political reasons?

  • @evan13579b I don't think they do - but that's because they haven't, yet.

But again, if you think that he was awarded the Prize for political reasons, then that would discredit and invalidate the Nobel Prize - and to do so would be to devalue and object to all the past and present winners of such a Prize.

  • @Xan81

No, it would mean that I am claiming that they are discrediting the other winners.

I already brought up the hypothetical of Hitler winning. Whether you think that is possible or not is irrelevant. If Hitler won then according to this logic of yours anyone who points out that he doesn't deserve it would be discrediting all the other winners even if they did deserve it.

  • @evan13579b No. You're missing the temporal component necessary to that argument.

And you are claiming... that they are claiming... to discredit? WTF does that mean?

  • @Xan81

There was only one "claiming" there. Maybe you need a calculator for that?

  • @evan13579b Pay attention and stay on track, please.
