As I have posted elsewhere, please try and find the BBC2 documentary shown on Tuesday 8 November 2011 called "The Dambusters"; it should be required viewing.
I have read somewhere that the raid only did enough damage to set the German war machine back a year. Yet, the raid took place in early May 1943, D-Day was 6th June 1944. With German industry held up they could not manufacture weapons and other machinery. Not only was this raid a terrific morale-booster but it also served as a pre-cursor to the liberation of Europe.
can't wait to see what balls up holiwood makes of the remake I bet guy gibbson becomes an american and nigger become nigga because thats allright "apparantly"
Totally understand and agree with your view..to a point.
The second World War was unavoidable and simply had to be won by the allies. You may not have been able to post your comment if that 'victory' had not been achieved.
Most wars ARE pointless and avoidable but WW2 was not one of those.
@indah007. I don't know who you are or where you're from. But thanks to actions such as these and others portrayed by film you're not living under the nazi boot. Like many others you complain about war. But you weren't there at the time were you? Retrospect is such a marvellous word ain't it? Another marvellous word is ignorance. You should be well aquainted with that one. Nuff said.
I imagine the noise airborne would have been deafening? I am humbled by the sheer guts and bravery of these men, the selfless dedication is awe inspiring. To fly so deep into enemy territory is something unimaginable if one hasn't actually done it. Thanks for posting this.
My grandfather fought in W.W.II and he and his generation were, are, and always will be my heroes, not these so-called celebrities. He always was quick to say how well the British fought, by the way. Does anyone recall a similar movie to this called "Appointment in London"? Would love to see it again. Thanks for posting this one.
First time I saw this film was when I joined the RAF in 1967. We went to see 633 squadron (In Colour) I was at the time dissapointed because of having to sit through this boring old black and white thing first.
It has been my number one most watched film ever since.
They went to the MOD for help, and they coulnt tell them anyting as the bomb and everything else was still on the secret list. so they had to work it all out themselves.
the freedom we enjoy is down to all the brave men and women who gave so much, its such a shame that the youger generations don't share the same britishness most of us have, to be able to do all that we do is down to sheer courage of all service man and women who gave their lives, may they all rest in peace.
The sequence about 5 minutes 50 seconds from the beginning of this clip was filmed over Goole in Yorkshire. See the link on the right hand side of the "Claims to Fame" page on the goole-on-the-web site.

It was sadly necessary.

And they was 24 hour raids so they was in their own portable British soil for 24 hours.
good souls.

It's incredibly brave, they could get shot down and killed at any moment and they still don't turn back!

@richardyingren
It's bad enough in a C130J and that has turboprops. I guess a primitive Lanc with piston engines would be bad. And VERY cold.
Reichsfuhrer1979 1 year ago
@Reichsfuhrer1979 I bet a Lancaster would fly the pants off a C130 on a mission like this
dave41184 1 year ago
@dave41184
Slower, but much more robust. A better quality of personnel back then too. Back when it wasn't frownedd on to be a real man.

thanks for posting this,!
i don't know which gives me goose bumps more,
the low rumble of 'lancs' in formation or the sound of the 'spitfires' merlin,
..so glad some people are using 'youtube' to archive such great footage,
"and at the setting of the sun, we will remember them!"
VIC SAUL,.
PS , Englands finest hour was the Battle Of Britian,
PPS !(note for Steven Speilberg!) that means ALL the Allied forces of the Commonwealth and beyond !

vixart:
The Lancaster used four Merlin engines, except one version which used the Bristol Hercules radial engine.
The Merlin engine also transformed the Mustang fighter into one of the best fighters of WW2.

How did they simulate the ack ack tracer?
dave41184 4 years ago
I believe back then they would cut into the film, so they were basically hand-drawn.
