That's great. I ordered my tickets in September and they finally came last week.
Just to let you know, you can actually walk onto the track before the race if you enter on the outside of the track (Georgetown Road) right where the first car on pit road would be and walk practically right in Gasoline Alley. There's nothing like the first time you see the scoring pole and think to yourself , "I'm at the Indy 500!!!"
gotta agree with you Mad been going since 1977 am 34 years old, Family, history, legends, everyone standing when the cars come down the back stretch,(sit in turn 3) outstanding.
These Delta vids are hair raising. This year will be my 24th 500 23rd in a row I am only 28 yrs old and this event is what I look foward to every year. Family tradition and history like nothing else. I truly love the 500 mile race!!
I think it was this one,(maybe '87) I sat in the paddock, across from I cant remember which pit, I watched a crew member have his legs completely ran over as the wheels were spinning and the jack came down. It was not televised as far as I know, strictly live action. I've allways wondered who this was or what the outcome was. Any-one????
Ahhhhhhhhhh....my comfort zone! LOVE these intros! I did appreciate them but would have even more had I known how short lived they would become. I have every Indy since 1985 recorded from TV. Can't wait to get them all on DVD and relive some of the greatest action in such a beloved era of the Indy 500!
I sure miss Paul Page. Jim Nabors won't last forever, either. It was disappointing at my son's first 500 in '07 when Mr. Nabors was ill and was not there to sing his 'Back home again...'
Yeah I was at the race in 07 and you're right...it just wasn't the same with Jim Nabors not singing. 07 was just a bad year altogether for Indy with the heavy rains. Your son would have loved the 06 race...Nabors sang live that day and the weather was awesome! Let me know if you ever get those races put on DVD...I'd seriously be interested in them
I regret that I never appreciated these intros when they were the norm rather than an artifact. Thought Paul Page was too melodramatic, too full of himself. But I always loved the Delta Force music. Now I miss Paul, too. Since we're all in "agreeance," I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people would like to see this kind of intro come back later this month.
Not sure what it would take to make it happen, other than cutting our own together and posting 'em...
I was intending on making one, but it depends on the quality and quantity of footage I can get. I should have enough thought to get it done, as well as a Starting Grid video
Your sure right about the intros that they use to have. I hope I'm wrong, but it seems ABC/ESPN are run by people that just don't share that opinion. It seems every year they care less and less about the history and importance of Indy and just want to promote it as a "commercial" with bizarre graphics and these laser sound effects.
I know we've all come to agree that "Delta Force" intros need to come back. Since this year marks the 20th anniversary of the first one used, and is the first year of a unified series, shouldn't it be a no brainer to make one. Maybe remix the original music to modernize it... But that is just an idea of mine. Who am I to convince ESPN/ABC...
I read this blog that ABC/ESPN announcer Paul Page had written and it said that he made the producers and ABC people promise never to use the Delta Force theme unless he himself wrote and narrates the intro. It was a very special thing they did every year in creating the intro for the 500. But i guess that explains why they have not used it in recent times.
They should use the Delta Force theme again, I agree with others and tell the story of the split. Bring back Paul Page for the VO. And end with..."It's all over now. Open wheel racing's best are back at Indy in May, and the Spectacle has never been brighter. It's May in Indianapolis. It's time for the Indianapolis 500."
It was on the Broadcast, but I am willing to bet they probally played it at the track that day. I know they did at the track at Kansas Speedway for the July 2003 race when the cars were about to fire up and roll off.
I have the Delta Force song downloaded on my computer and I still play that song before every Indy 500, I wish they would bring it back at least once more, preferably if the IRL/Champ Car ever get back together and we truly have the energy and excitement that Indy used to have.

I love the Delta Force theme used for these intros, but I don't really like the way they laced in the other song with it for this one.

I emailed ABC sports stating that there are a select few of us that wish they'd bring back the Delta Force Intro.
I also told them the music has become apart of the lore of the race.
