I was in Melbourne, Australia in 1983 and use to drive around with my best friend from South Africa and his wife. We sang this song over and over again. We gave it all we were worth. If I had a time machine that would be where I would go.
this song is all about a dreamer. He thinks he's going somewhere but he ain't going nowhere. We'll climb that bridge after it's gone after we're way past it - dream on dream on !
My favorite version is on The Basement Tapes. This version, though, was recorded in order to appear on Greatest Hits Vol. 2. The two versions have a different tempo, some different lyrics, etc.
@lemkowitz1 What do you think it's referring to. Today, for some reason it reminded my of my grandpa, a fiddler, and I wrote a poem to it. You're right. It don't get much better.
guy from Byrds, they covered this song but made a misteke in lyrics (verses with money and tent), so this is probably some alternate "funny" take with a sarcastic message to McGuinn
I think the original lyrics was "Pick up your money/Pack up your tent", McGuinn sang it "Pack up your money/Pick up your tent". Dylan sang the new lyric here with the shot at McGuinn. Nice shot.
i gave a street guy 2 bucks today and he played me this song. id never heard it before. made a note of some of the lyrics in my phone and found it. his was actually better in my mind...but thats probably because i prefer a plain acoustic and voice. no offense to dylan.

I heard Dylan was a lousy speller: parabell: bell hung from a parachute. choon: drug of choice--as wha'choon? insperation: the hole the spear makes. rekon: to try an alternate spelling. listing: to write or think while drinking. wether: busted shower cap. puley: covered with pules. meanful: really, really mean. essentail: a duck's ass. acttualy: twice as real. Pay attention to the wavy red lines. God bless America and her schools.
Dylan is a lot more than just music man!!! Listen to the Lyrics, his songs are parabells. Read them out without the choon and they are poetry. There is nobody that even come close to the genius of Bob Dylan. He is my insperation.
Strange... Wilson, a person said, 'have you heard Dylan's version of Wagon Wheel, it is great, he wrote it' - I replied to him, but he seems to have deleted his post.

Oh, and btw, Genghis Khan was one of the greatest leaders of all time, of one of the most culturally diverse peoples of all time. Certainly not a "Barbaric Despotic leader"

This has got to be the most underrated Dylan song ever.. Thank God my parents bought me the Greatest Hits Volume II for Christmas because I've been listening to it nonstop ever since. I love when he says, "Ghengis Khan and his brother Don." I love history :) So that was a nice surprise.
Ghengis Khan and his brother Don is a reference to the Everly Bros contentious relationship that led to their not performming let aone talking to each other for 10 yrs. Dylan was in a mortocycle accident that laid him off, he was worried about not performing After he had the accident he ws not going nowhere.
Prior to Dylans accident he ws on the fast track now he ws going to have time for movies (Gunga Din), shopping perhaps buy sme rings, a gun that sings, a flute that tutes, &a b tht stings a sky tht cries & a bird tht flies, a fish tht walks & a dog tht talks. Life chngd for him as quickly as clouds so swift bring rain He ws frced to rst on an easy chair. Also a good time to detox frm unhlthy hbts. Everly Bros are Phil and Don also refrnced in Paul McArtneys Let Em In.
