@DreaminMyLifeAway Imo, i think this song is simply about doing what makes you happy, and not caring what people around you say or do, and that happiness is a state of mind.

Otherwise, it's most likely about some addict who's in denial. Could be a drug addict, love addict, whatever. They were happy to begin with, but now that the spark and novelty has worn off, obviously they aren't happy or enjoying the 'high' anymore. Now they are just in denial.and don't want to tell Sheryl the truth =]

Thanks for posting this. Your interpretation of the lyrics is interesting.

My own take is that this song is a powerful expression of ambivalence about a relationship that she wants/doesn't want to be in. She has sacrificed for this guy, followed his plan, and yet, "he's so sad." Despite her anger, the song concludes with softer feelings, "well okay, we get along." The relationship is good AND bad.

Maybe the same is true regarding her relationship to her career as a musician/pop star.

i agree with you on the talented and beautiful part but what is this Hell she has been through. From what i've read her life hasn't been that bad. She was happy in school and went to college and then became a teacher. Then after a few years started building her career. Sure she may have strugled booking gigs and stuff but that wasn't her main source of income. It was her passion to do it. It is better to have some life experience before makin it big. Unlike those douchenozzels on American Idol.

I think there was a lot of trouble over who wrote her first album. If I'm right somebody killed themselves over songwriting credits and I think Sheryl blames herself for it ever since.

SherylJoe is pretty accurate. First, Sheryl didn't achieve any significant personal success until age 31 - that's a long time to struggle. She worked as a waitress when she went to LA to try & make it in the business. Her first album was such a mismatch that it was never even released.

After Sheryl's first breakthrough album there were a lot of bad feelings about who contributed what. It was her boyfriend who killed himself; reasons still debated. Bad feelings persist in some circles to this day.

Then there's the very public failures of her relationships, inability to find long-lasting love or to start a family until very recently, breast cancer in 2006, etc.

Certainly not a smooth road in my opinion.

People around you die all the time. I had a friend die just this week. Doesn't mean you milk the sympathy forever.

As for the breast cancer, that sucks. But that's pretty current. Only a few years. Most of her hit songs were out before that. Plus breast cancer has alot of support these days. Bif Naked had breast cancer and we don't look at her and think, "What a hard life she has had."
