  • I believe the power of music is it's ability to synchronise with one's essence. That's the point where you really start rockin, movin, and bangin your head. At times these songs perfectly sync up with what I can only describe as the true frequency of my essence!!

  • Larry "Rhino" Rhinehart, guitarist and founder of Captain Beyond died monday Jan 2 2012 in Bradenton, FL. RIP

I had a link to the story in the Bradenton Herald-Tribune, but I think youtube won't let me post it.

  • THIS IS/WAS A CLASSIC WAY ,WAY AHEAD OF IT'S TIME! BOBBY WARES OUT THE SNARE ON DRUMS,GREAT HARMONICS ON VOCALS, CREATIVE GUITAR 4 THAT TIME& JUST A TITE MASTERPIECE OF ROCK/FUSHION GUM CHEWING ASS KICKIN BAND! MISS THOSE DAYS.

  • Shades of rubber duckies?

  • Please explain crass my friend. : )

  • @420surfjunkie This band had a huge effect on Las Vegas bands of the day. Thank U 4 B ing a fan! : )

  • When a friend asks, "Do you have any classic rock"? I put this on.

  • i dont mean that in a bullshit way this makes me think of whats necessary to counter the fascists.

  • its sort of like the apropriate response to major general despair from crass?

  • It's so warped that with all the crap getting so many hits that these treasures are saved for just so few. What a waste...of their time looking at what is merely called music.

  • Kick Ass visuals!! Five stars!

  • love youtube for bringing all these treasures back to my ears...love this but i think i love the title more...dancing madly backwards!! ...on a sea of air......... =^ ]

  • Bravo ! & I don’t mean the channel.

An EXELENT ‘Montoge’ of something that IS Captain Beyond and did them Justis.

Agreed, Progressive rock at its' best.

  • Bravo ! & I don’t mean the channel.

An EXELENT ‘Montoge’ of something that IS Captain Beyond and did them Justis.

  • Great band ! rod evans on vacals....the original Deep Purple singer.

  • Easy to picture Rush or Dream Theatre doing the section from 3:13 to 4:02 today!

  • *is dancing madly backwards*

  • Weirdest band ever to be signed to Capricorn. Unfortunately, this came out just as all the legal troubles, Greg and Cher, and the collapse of the label happened. The only way to get it on CD for years was on a Japanese import with a dubious lyric sheet.

Armworth should make the soundtrack for the Mid-East wars (choose your fave).

    .

"What was my arm worth when they took it away?

...It's only a stub of the original thing that was there when I signed up and saluted my King"

  • I was in college when this was new, been lovin' it since.

  • Really to bad "Capt. Beyond" didn't get a HELL of a lot more well known! One of the best, still great music. A little reminisent of Lynard Skynard but heavyer!!

  • @BarronoftheBlues Not even similar, are you eating bad mushrooms?

The drummer Bobby Caldwell was the leader of the band.

  • This tune slays!!!!!!!

  • Rhino SHREDS!!!

  • Great band! I've heard this album five thousand times. Once I was in a car and "Thousand Days of Yesterday" played on FM. I almost lost it! Made everyone shut the Hell up and listen to a short window of GENIUS!

  • This is one of the most solid rock albums of all time. It gets better and better with each listening. I'll admit I did not care much for Captain Beyond's second LP. However, their third is almost as legendary as the first. Keep up the good work (note: not being a libertine, but posting good music).

  • not too bad with a couple of 4 way hits of orange sunshine, either. haha!

  • A great unknown super group.

  • Great with mushrooms! What a fine alt rock rand from the early 70's! My goodness, they were on Capricorn records for a while, the southern rock stronghold. What an excellent decision to sign these guys!

  • This is great! A friend just told me to listen to this。 Thank god for friends。

  • this has to be the most underrated LP of all time...it's like a journey into space. more than Floyd even..like u really launch land explore and return home in a blaze of flame outside your spaceship...timeless.

  • still the greatest drum riff intro i ever heard... clever, inventive, simple. .Caldwell you are the shit !

  • Never stop dig'n!... Every era has it's underground... Check out beyondthebeatgeneration ... And then dig into today's bands keep'n it real like Hockey, Silversun Pickups, Ghostland Observatory, Mountain Man, Paper Tongues, Black Mountain, The Answer, Billy Boy on Poison, Crash Kings, Dirty Heads, Street Sweeper Social Club, Cage the Elephant, MUSE, Smashing Pumpkins, and always Jack White!

  • Libertine.....SWEET !

  • This video is put together nice.

  • Trapped in a van on windowpane with this on the 8-track for hours...nobody could find the door. Forever in my head.

  • Isaw them with blue oyster cult and amboy dukes

  • Comment removed

  • Still have the album in mint condition.

  • Oh, Man, this album kicks you in the teeth!!!! I just love the cool stuff they are playing! This band is a true inspiration for anyone who longs to play prog!

  • thier is a band called Budgie a norwigien band that some say is better than Captian Beyound. to me Captian Beyound is the best for this type of musical mix . Jax Jaxon

  • @jaypauljackson Budgie is from UK.

  • @jaypauljackson - Hey jay, Budgie was a very cool band. They were from Cardiff in Wales. They were more metal than Capt. Beyond. I loved their music too, but it was quite different from Capt. Beyond. You can find some of their stuff on the web. Search for them. (Budgie band)

  • I saw this band in 1972 along with Trapeze

  • got to see this band along with the Amboy Dukes. never saw life the same again... awesome absolute

  • got to see this band the the Amboy Dukes. never thought life was quite the same again... awesome absolute

  • great band. just amazing. tons of great riffs.

  • I only want to say it is great that so many young folks are now listening to the music I grew up with some of the best music ever ,I believe. anyway if you are liking Captain beyond you may also like a group that was known as Wishbone Ash

  • A little like Wishbone Ash, from around the same time frame

  • Vocals must have influenced SKYNRD - ya think? Timing is evocative of early RUSH - so they influenced those Canucks, too? NUGENT-inspired riffs here - Cat Scratch fever?

  • Vocals must have influenced SKYNRD - ya think? Timing is evocative of early RUSH - so they influenced those Canucks, too?

  • the original heavy metal supergroup...earsplittenloudenboomer....is dancingmadlybackwords !!

  • Just discovered this band, one of the best 70s bands I've ever heard.

  • I looked for this on CD for years and finally found it

  • I was a fan the first time I heard them. 1972 was the year and they played along with Black Oak Arkansas and Dr. Hook. I will never forget that show. And they were unknown at the time and they stole the show. I also have the LP with the original 3D cover on it. Timeless.

  • @phnxbyrd I saw them w/ Black Oak and Foghat in the 70's and also had the 3-D cover.. I think someone took it. It's worth ssome money now!

  • this song is incredible!!

  • THIS WAS THE SHIT BACK IN THE DAY,HELL ITS STILL STANDS UP TO SOME OF THE SHIT THATS OUT TODAY COMON LISTEN TO THE TIMING RINO IN THE HOUSE...............................ONE

  • One of the baddest albums in exsistance.I have it on vinal.

  • I saw them in 1974 with Johnny Winters, Liked them better than Iron Butterfly. 36 years later I am still listening to them ,

  • absolutely brilliant. Very creative, clean, innovative, fun, precise

  • First time I introduced this group to a drummer friend, he turned me on to the fact that Caldwell plays/writes in so many different time signatures. Ever since having that pointed out to me, I've yet to hear any other band do things this well!

  • Did anybody else see the guiter player at 3:02? Or is it just my imagination?

  • @oatnoid i see him left center of image beard guitar strap

head turned to his right looks like a strat sorta

  • Awesome only the best!

  • F******awesome! :o)

  • i heard about this band in a Clutch lyric. thought I'd check it out. not disappointed. even the name of this song is part of the lyrics.

  • @colemanpike I've had this album for months but only now do I notice how much these riffs sound "Clutchy", only vice versa

  • Ha! Gotta love the internet. I awoke this morning thinking about Captain Beyond--who I haven't thought about for years--and thought I'd see if I could dig up some of their music on my computer--well, what do you know-a treasure trove of CB! I saw these guys back in '72 or '73--the OG line up...and of course they were fantastic. @ Buggerlugz000--Erik Brann was awesome...may he RIP.

  • best music ever ,40 year fan enjoy!

  • Muy bueno, lo estaba buscando hace tiempo.

  • Captain Beyond is great! Thanks for posting this.

  • ElRhino has new music out. Ive started calling stations

  • @phydeauxddog i just ordered the disc today

  • The finest album of that generation IMO. I've been listening to and loving this since I was 15 -1972.

  • @mrdak what is IMO generation? thanks

  • @JAMMA68

The finest album of that generation IMO.... IMO "In My Opinion"

  • BTW, if you folks like this, check out the 12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus by Spirit. It is a concept album and awesome.

  • @raiseya11 Yeah, that spirit album is great. i met them when I was 17. Ed Cassidy really encouraged me to practice hard and i did and I made it...

  • This stuff is the snizzits. Have the album, not pristine as it got played quite a few times.

  • You hit it on the head!

Consists of vets from Deep Purple, Iron Butterfly, and Edgar Winter.

Rod Evans sang DP's "Hush", and "Kentucky Woman". Replaced for being a "crooner".

    Were on Capricorn (!?)

The drummer wrote most of the music, and left after this LP to play in Armageddon, Keith Relf's (Yardbirds) band. Relf was electrocuted playing guitar in his room after releasing one LP.

Saw them play this live w/Alice Cooper's "Killer" Tour trippin'..

Turned into a Nashville Kegger Classic.

  • When I first heard this album, I was blown away. Lightyears ahead of it's time. Progressive rock at it's best.

  • I have this on the album with 3D pic Sounds great!

  • Wow ! !

Thanks for posting ! ! I loved the music from this time. This was a favorite of mine, along with so much of the music that made the 1970's one of the BEST periods of music.! !

Excellent quality audio ! ! Thank you for posting ! !

I used to really like music. I feel sorry for young folks these days, though. There just isn't much I can say good about most of what passes for music these days. JipHop is just ......oh, well.......

  • One more thing. You did a phenomenal job with the vid. Thanks.

  • Phenomenal CD. This group truly rocks. Let's get them back. Thanks for posting.

  • got my name from 0:39 haha fakk this song is just sheer genius and incredible masterpiece, one word EPIC !!!!

  • The guitars starting at 2:35 or so are awesome!

  • Superman, Superman, wish I could fly like Superman.

  • Nobody, but nobody, was putting out better music at the time this was released.

  • What??

    * Genesis - Foxtrot (1972)

    * Yes - Close to the edge (1972)

    * Wishbone Ash - Argus (1972)

    * Le Orme - Uomo di Pezza (9172)

    * Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick (1972), etc, etc, etc.

I think you got the idea...

  • Sure I get the idea. I have all of those albums and they are indeed excellent. I posted my *opinion*. This is an album that was a very important part of my youth. There is no definitive answer, only opinions.

  • Well, the whole idea of posting here is to share our opinions. Music can also have a sentimental value to us, that's for sure.

    Btw, I love this album.

  • @Floydian1384 Yes, Floydian, I had all of those albums. I'm surprised you know about Le Orme-a great Italian band...

  • @musikfanat Thanks for that in regard to Erik Brann. Was sure he was in there somewhere !

  • @Floydian1384 You have phenomenal taste. I just bought Argus literally 3 days ago and I love Thick as a brick... got any suggestions for further music of this caliber?

  • @megaman61293 It's a completely different animal, but try the 360;s Strawberry Stone CD for a loopy guitar fest that comes off like Patty Smith mixed with the Ballad of You and Me and Pooneil and more drug references than a PDR. The guitarist is amazing and barges through each song like a muscle car plowing through a festival seating crowd. Don't bother with their other efforts, this is the only one to hit unhinged perfection. The others are more...professional.

  • I don't thnk there is a better reason to go on YouTube daily

  • I got a japanese cd of this at a record/cd show last weekend.

  • I feel pretty stoopid about this. I had never heard of them before. They sounded great. Good solid jams, almost prog sounding.

  • YES YES YES

  • i love the opening riff

  • I might be wrong, but i believe it is the bass guitarist from Iron Butterfly, Lee Dorman. Great band.... way ahead of it's time!!!

  • And the original singer from Deep Purple, Rod Evans.

  • Capt. Bynd. WOW! I thank you for this. The local radio in Seattle has none of this on file. Un-believeably amazing sound!

1st heard these guy's in 1975. Check out Roy Bucchanan, same period, totally dif. sound.

Isn't this the Lead guitarist from "Iron Butterfly"?

    Thanks again Libertine62

    Raven

  • Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt was founding lead player

  • @eaestes101 Uhh, Erik Brann was the guitarist with Iron butterfly when they broke big in 1968. I saw them then...

  • Used to play Super Mario on Nintendo to this album...I'd turn the game sound down and crank this album.....NICE!!

  • I walked into a record store in 1972 and walked out with this album. There wasn't a band around then or now that has anything on this classic line up. So glad I found this on CD years ago.

  • WAY COOL!

  • Heard of this band referenced in a song and decided to buy this album. Best $2.50 i ever spent. I'm sure these guys killed live.

  • I love this band. I have all three of their albums on vinyl and their first two on CD. What sucks is I bought Japanese imports on CD and only a few weeks later they became available in the U.S. for much cheaper.

  • Great Band. Same they never got any air play in 70's. I have the 8 Tracks. Turned a bunch of my friends on to this band. Many years later I found the CD's and gladly scarfed them up. Now, I'm still able to enjoy them on You Tube as well. This first album kicks major ass.

  • Saw they boys once walking in on an Almond Bros concert. Had just picked up their first LP. They were all that and then some. I loke the space spin. Must be the same universe my Father made. Stephen

  • I still have two of these albums, Captain Beyond and Sufficiently Breathless, gonna put them on my computer so I won't lose these treasures.

  • a set of stars psychedelic magnificos released three albums, doses of heavy riffs and passages that traveled the basis for the development of the stoner rock many years later.

  • Thanks for posting this wonderful band...Just like SAGA they just never got the breaks..But we can till get to hear the wonder tunes they left for prosperity...

  • I got stoned many times listening to this album. Nearly wore it out. Didn't think I'd ever hear "Armworth" again. Thank you YouTube.

  • I hate retards who argue on the net - great fucking band, man - what do you retards think?

  • Wish they were still together...

  • I'm so sorry your skin is so thin

I supose making you sad means...you will put up with racist but get sad when sobody calls them on it!

what makes me sad is....people who let others be straight up racist and only comment to those who call the racist out! (be sad).fine with me...you can be here to defend them bigots huh?..you make me sad fuck lol....fuck off! I dont like bigots. GOT that sad sack. whats worse? the bigot or the one who calls him on it?....or the one who defends the bigot?

  • Absolutely pure earcandy & awesome, I love this band..

  • yeah man...we could play this game all day huh? thanks for replying to my hypocrit actions...by telling me to just enjoy the music...yet you felt justified in not just enjoying the music and commenting on my comment! thanks for the advice! take it as your own while your at it! great tune....yeah man, i agree dont be a hypocrit...lol as you say...pure and simple...lets both not comment at all anymore about anything and just enjoy the music! i'll start NOW....OK YOUR TURN! Captian Beyond rocks...

  • OL KOSHER OY FRM BACK THEN EVERY DRUMMER FROM HOMIES TOWNTO APPROXIMATLY ...... DON REMEMBER HOW FAR ...... Hhad to kNOW HOW TO PLAY THIS ITRO ....OR THEY WERENT SH@T AND DON FORGET THE INTERENSKIES OF THE TIMINGS BACK THEN ....THIS ALBUM WAS THE DEFINING POINT BETWEEN WANAS AND SERIOUS WANNAS. AND YOU HAD TO BE ABLE TO PLAY THE WHOL DANG THANG ....FRONT TO BACK AND BACK TO FRONT YOU MUSIES THESE DAYS IS A BUNCH A WOOOSIES DARE YA TA PLAY IT

  • I hear you, granny! Speaking of "...THE INTERENSKIES OF THE TIMINGS...", back in the day, fond memories of enjoying Captain Beyond...esp., while under the influence of some of 'Uncle Tom's' sassafras MDA: strobing; then, the hallucinations kicking in...in time with the music.... Ah, the good old days...bring back the Altered States of America!

  • no mesmerization eclipse -.-

  • Ok. Muito obrigado - thanks -

  • Turner Hall, Quincy IL, Nov 77, Smokehouse fronted. Suhweet mem

  • They never got any Jewish Media Mafia air play for some reason, must have been for a political, racial reason, not a musical reason.

  • wow dude! way to fuck up a good thing! do you tell your old lady that its the jews fault you cant get her off,.... bet you blame the jews for your lack of sack hangen also... dont ya boy! and no im not a jew just a fella that is sick of jackasses bringing politics to these music pages! have a grand life...cant believe you pulled that shit on a captain beyond vid...shove a bone up your ass and let the dogs drag you off....lol

  • Wait, so you have an issue with something you perceive as jew bashing but have no issue with telling him to "shove a boner up his ass" ? Thats kind of hypocritical. Also I'm not usually a grammar nazi but you asked for it. If your asking somebody "dont ya boy" that needs to end with a question mark not an exclamation point.

  • I was a fan from the start. I could never understand how they didnt rise to the top. Musically both in song writing and talent they are as good as Floyd. Excellent switches!

They are in my top 5. Pink Floyd, Captain Beyond, Genesis (With Gabriel), ELP, Tull etc.. They should have become one of the super bands. Deep Purple is good, but doesnt come close to Captain Beyond.

  • I love this LP. Th original cover sweetened this up even more. The cover was a 3D image of the one shown at the opening of this video

  • When I was much younger I raced Moto Cross for a living. 20 minutes before the starting gate I'd go into my vand and crank this album with headphones. This is a pure full throttle experience.

  • @OnoSata 20 minutes?sounds very specific

  • Takes me wayyy back. We called it progressive but, as I listen to it again, it will always be fantastic.

  • never ceases to trip me out...

I got this album when it was new..

  • Amazing band But I never liked ROD EVANS Voice. Not even in DEEP PURPLE.

  • Erasing all my memories...An Epic Classic

  • That 1st Captain Beyond album was one of the greatest of all time...man, that brings back some good memories...

  • Thanks for the memory rush!

  • Bobby Caldwell did some great work with Johnny Winter as well. Very underrated drummer.

  • thank you !!!

  • Amazed to see people here mention all those old but usually unknown bands like Goosecreek Symphony, JoJo Gunne, & Gentle Giant! Other lesser known bands I remember from that time were The Flock, Flash, Cat Mother, & the Siegel Schwall Blues Band.

  • If no news is good news, bad news'll do!

  • These guys have been killin' me for 35 freaking years. They were always my "go-to" end of party, blow up your speakers band, after which, everone just cleaned up and crawled home.

I, too sought to learn Bobby Caldwell's licks on this record. I haven't given up yet.

Wish Capricorn had known what to do with them.

  • @psonderman way cool post bud yeah staggering home from some of

those allnighters i was a member of 'the zombie marching band' for sure

but w/ captain beyond stil ringing in my ears so it was cool

  • @psonderman i would have stayed man

  • @psonderman Me too. 'Dancing" is in 5/4 at the beginning. And he wrote all of the music. Us drummers can tell because it's so syncopated.

  • @triplettam wow i realey love this thank you

  • Unbelievably underrated band; still one of my faves to this day and I listen to all kinds of new stuff. Bobby Caldwell was one of the best drummers ever and inspired me to play!!!

  • I have worn out 2 LPs and a cassette of it..hey msteeln...I was at the Memphis Black Sabbath show that turned into a riot when the equipment stopped working and Iommi got pissed and kicked his stack over..

  • Wow, more than a few of us saw these guy's with the Coop. I lucked out and saw the two Hollywood Bowl shows, with them opening for AC and JoJo Gunne (who were also great that night), and then with Black Sabbath (the night Tony puked on himself... show over...) and Gentle Giant. CB amazed me with their abilty to do the record so faithfully, but also add a bit of power. Rod was terrific as a frontman.

    Play on, Captain!

  • I was there too. Tommi O.D. on stage. This is one of the obsolute BEST RECORDS OF ALL TIME. Bobby Caldwell rules. And I'm not even a drummer. If I were to be stuck on a island this would be one of my picks. And I'm a Blues guy.

  • Absolutely one of the finest bands to play and never got recognition they deserved. A Led Zepplin on steroids. Drummer-a 10. Guitars are in sync and rhythm is outstanding.

Wish they could make more music.

  • Fucking amazing!

  • Man, you are scary talented!

When I was just a young hippiechick, I saw Captain Beyond twice; once was together with Savoy Brown, and the other was with Alice Cooper. Back then, it seems like there were nearly always 2 opening acts, but I don't remember who they were. I DO remember that I was tripping good for both concerts, and I will never forget how incredible both concerts were!

    Thanks for the memories!

  • I saw them with Alice Cooper in Nashville, at the Tennessee State Fair. We all were doing blue barrel acid. I think Goose Creek Symphony (!?) opened. We all sat mouths agape, blue stained tongues hanging out as this militarily precise band of superhippies slapped us upside the head with the entire first album. It's hard for some to understand how unusual the time signatures seemed upon release. This went on to be a great local favorite at keggers, and other less orthodox gatherings.

  • @facelesshorseman He He ... orange double dome anyone?

  • ladmex53, I have always wondered the same thing. I bought this album not too long after it came out and no one had heard of them around where I lived. Over 30 years later, most still haven't heard of them. This is just flat out good..no, great music!

  • I bought this album when it first came out. I still have it. I never understood why it didn't receive any airplay on any local stations. You only heard a song or two on a local college FM station if you were lucky. The songs on this album were as good, if not better, than anything else that was playing on the radio back in the early 70's! Thanks for posting it!

  • Sold this album for $2.00 back in 1974. What a fool I was! A classic I sure miss. Rock on.

  • Don't feel too bad - I GAVE mine away, along with 200 others!!!!

I regret it to this day.

  • I am sorry you gave away all those albums. But get this, about 5 years ago, my sister -in -law gave me over 50 of her records for Christmas five years ago.Among them were all of Cat Stevens (before he became Muslim), the orginal Woodstock album and the Bangla Desh album. I also was fortunate to go to a yard sale 2 years ago outside of Harrisonburg, Va and bought 3 John Mayall and 3 Eric Clapton for a total of $5.00. What a steal !

  • I'd say you certainly scored!

  • I rember this I had the albluum 70 s dud love it still . thank U,

  • How forunate u r BendexX

  • wow, awesome thanks to my dad im able to hear these great songs
