You can see the lead guitarist trying to outplay the song. His sound is overpowering the rest of the band; it's like he's playing angry! You hear them play this song now - the lead guitar totally compliments the rest of the band. This is a great song, but the video was hard to listen to.
@MamboMick We no longer live in a world where musical talent equals success. Just ask the rest of Collective Soul - they haven't exactly set the world on fire since Ross' departure... Now, have they?
As far his "Awsomeness. " Speaking purely as a guitarist who's not really all that much into Collective Soul - I honestly believe he's one of the top 3 guitarists to get their start in the 90's . Now, thats not really saying all that much. But for what it is - I'd say it's pretty "awesome."

It amazes me how much Ed and Roger Clyne remind me of each other. Incredible singers, awesome songwriters, and leaders of two of the best bands ever! Cheers and here's to life.
Ross doesn't contribuit a lot on CS, Ross was the CS that we miss, today all of us is talking about CS because of talent of Ross. Ed is a very good songwriter like thousans around the world but just a few like Ross can kick a rock band at the top ten.
I'm a huge CS fan. In my opinion, Dosage was their "Sgt Pepper" album. Their following releases are all the same songs, only different. Losing Shane and Ross changed the band from rock to pop.
I think it became very difficult for Ross & Ed to share the spotlight. No denying Ross's showmanship and talent. Ed's a great songwriter but not a blow em away, rip out a insane solo kinda guitarist. It is quite obvious Ross contributed alot to the great CS classics cause there is clearly not as many since Ross left. Story is Ross hooked up with Ed's wife & later married her. Rough situation.
This band rocks. Ed Roland and his brother are great!!...They were great last friday in Hampton NH. My all time favorite band. This album, Dosage, is one of the very few albums you can put in and listen from begining to end and not be dissapointed in any song. Great stuff.
This vid is gr8! I wouldn't have known about them except for my daughter's Twilight cd. Who cares?Even if you hate Tw.-(I'm no a huge fan-I think it ok) They're prob. very happy to be better known & I doubt they turned down the royalties.
really! they've been around a long time, early 90's, this is the original band, they've since changed 2 of the band members, the drummer and the lead guitarist, it's a shame, they were an amazing band back then
actually, there is nothing wrong with people who discover good songs from a soundtrack. soundtracks are great like that! you get to find more bands you like.
kreamowheat -- you've got to be kidding about Shane. He brought nothing to the band. You could have mickey mouse be the drummer and it would sound the same. Ross I can agree with. Losing Ross definitely cost the band some of their sound and Joel has a different style. I still love them though, and I think Joel does a great job.
I agree. I wouldn't say anything against Shane, but he really didn't bring anything special to the band musically. The new guy they got, Chenny is actually pretty good.
I can understand why you would think that. Typically, drummers are the most expendable member. If you can say that because drums are drums, but if you go to Collective Soul's website they have a link of media articles about the band and their history and you would be surprised to learn that Shane actually contributed musically, not just rhythmically, to the band on many occasions, especially with the Dosage album.
Tremble for my Beloved was a great song many many years before people discovered it on the "Twilight" sound track. Collective Soul is probably the most overlooked band with the most talent out there. Love them!
They *were* talented. With the loss of Ross and Shane, they lost most of their "collected Soul" Don't get me wrong, Joel and Ryan/Cheney, whoever their drummer is now, are good performers, but there is noooo way Joel could pull of some of the sweet solos that Ross did let alone come up with new ones for future albums.
No, Joel is not Ross, but Ross is not Joel, either. Ross's solos grabbed you, but Joel just takes you places you didn't even know you were going to. Both great. Both great with the band. Bands evolve if they are good, otherwise they just become Classic Rock.
He doesn't go off on crazy solos like Ross did. Honestly I'm not that satisfied with Joel's studio guitar work. Its nothing special, but if you see him live in concert a few times, it is pretty amazing what he is capable of.
the live guitar solo on "better now" is pretty freakin crazy. don't get me wrong, i'm from the camp that thinks Ross is one of the greatest rock guitarist at least of the 90's if not all time... also check the solo on "Dig" from the new album, very inventive.
I'm jealous. I only met them once, and it was in 2007, when they had their current line up. They are extremely nice. I didn't even bring anything for them to sign because I would have wanted them to sign Dosage, but it seemed wrong to have them sign it when there are different bandmates on the album sleeve.
Its interesting that goths and emos are listening to this band now.... the main song writer in this band is a heavy duty Christian...save your negative replys I am only making an observation and dont mean to offend anyone.
Oh my god, you need to relax. Don't freak out. And no, emos and goths are not going to be all over collective soul because of Twilight. This twilight phase will pass.
Me too. I read the entire Anne Rice series, watched Moonlight, Blade, True Blood, and am reading 2 other complete series at the moment. I also did like Twilight, but NOT for the vampire stuff, there was way too little of it for that. But I've been a vampire fan for many many years, and am definitely NOT goth or emo, and it's funny to even think anyone thinks of vampire fans as such. Not that there really is anything WRONG with Goths, it's just a statement and no big deal.
I was a fan of Collective Soul from a few years back when I went to the states (I'm a Brit - CS have yet to break the industry over here :-( )
I was sat in the Hard Rock Cafe in Orlando and on the TV screen, CS were playing "Heavy" and I just remember going being absolutely blown away. I bought the Twilight soundtrack and score. I can't decide whether their being on the soundtrack is a good thing for them or not. Damn emo kids.
Joel Kosche was the guitar tech for Ross, I think Joel is really good as well.
The reason Ross left was he had an affair with Ed's ex-wife. If you actually listen to subsequent albums and music, you'll notice that Ed reflects this event in his music (Him, How Do You Love, etc). Quite interesting.
I remember seeing this on The Jay Leno Show. I was mesmerized. Its amazing to see it again here. I miss Ross. Joel is really good, but I feel like Ross was a fundamental pillar of the sond that attracted me to the band.
any chance of a reunion with Shane and Ross?
