the problem with discovering Led Zeppelin for the first time is the fact that its as good as rock and roll gets . Anytrhing else you discover will be infereior
@Cincinnatus1869 I know! I never used to listen to music much, you know, just a little bit of older rock bands. Then I started listening to Zep. They are still the only music I listen to. People always complain that I don't listen to much else. Why should I ? :D
@Cincinnatus1869 Check out Jeff Buckley's entire catalog--He was a big fan of Led Zepp; in fact, he and his friend were listening and singing along to LZ when he was pulled underwater and drowned. What's more interesting is that Jimmy Page was a big fan of Jeff Buckley. He did some rock, but he didn't fit into any one category...
the first time i heard led zeppelin was when i was working on a chicken coop with my brother... he said, "this will either make you work harder or just want to sit down with your mouth open"
I Love This Song! played it at some redneck dive in Newago MI some years ago on the jukebox and almost got killed. Don't know why they had it on there, cuz they didn't appreciate it at all. Seriously, we had to leave to avoid a riot!!!!
@moreblack ... It think it was because they had to lug stuff for the drums that was cumbersome and they needed to shorten the set. But the couple of times they played it thankfully Peter Grant didn't get to.
@zed0469 the whole reason they never did it live is because the production effects couldn't really be recreated i.e. bonzo's set was recorded in a 3 story stairwell with 2 different mics in order to get the right reverb. like who the fuck thinks "hey, imma put this big ass kit in a stairwell".........zep, thats who
ATTENTION Led-Zeppelin Fans! Please HERE ME OUT. I'm in a Rock band. Were just trying to bring good music like this back into the world. we work as hard as we can. and we CAN NOT catch a break.
Help us make Rock 'n"Roll the #1 again. Please take a small piece of your time to check out our song Louisiana:Mississippi by The Red Coats. Let us know what you think. if you like it tell your friends about it. Good and Bad Comments are very welcome.
I was 10 years old when my brother played this for me. I had grown up on Beatles and Stones and 'Levee' broke my back and raised my soul. This was a combination of R&B and rock I had not really experienced. John's drumming was what made it, for sure.
@iClubMidgets I was in 6th grade in 75,I had Houses & stole my brothers Zep II & 4 all the time & just as high as could possibly be on Zeppelin. A kid brought in a few bootleg live Dbl albums to school,I listened at home & was Really - Really disappointed, this was b4 TSRTS.Never heard live b4. Rec. quality was bad so were the performances. It was a wake up call to studio vs live and that they were human, & some shows blew.
@tjfreak Its time to reinvstigate the bootlegs. There are some that the sound quality is 10 out of 10. For example 01-15-1973 Southhampton. I haven't listened to a studio album in years.
@rjlongo I wish I could,1 was Seattle, the other 2 I cant remember at All.The weird part, the album jackets were kinda nice, more emphasis on those than the recordings themselves.I'm sure there were / are
descent bootlegs lp's from that period... these weren't. The kid (Peter Fine) that brought them in to class took them from his older brother also..I got slapped around when I got caught.I don't play the albums, only to take a rest from it & have it sound that much better after a long reprieve

led zeppelin were like a musical juggernaut ..just blew everything away that was in its path...and there are other great bands out there...as well...they were unique...and the music round that time was as well...timeless.
Absolutely the heaviest band of all time. It's incredible how they could produce this type of sound on stage. It's like the sound of a hurricane in music form.

Has been my favortie song by Led Zeppelin since the first time I had ever heard, even my parents say I loved this song as a child, though, I've yet to hear the original.
The single best clip of Bonham that I've ever seen on youtube is entitled: "Led Zeppelin- Moby Dick (Live At Royal Albert Hall 1970)". It's taken from the 2003 Led Zeppelin DVD release....Watch this clip!!
quite remarkable. I remember the first time I heard Black Dog. I was about 12. I'm now 43 and still marvel at it. Levee did slay me, but so did D'yer Maker and many more. I agree. It is exciting to think about kids today discovering what makes their music today, but of course, we cannot credit Zep for this music. The Blues have been with us a long time. I too am anxious to expose my son to this amazing music. I hope he is captivated like I was.
@FoghornLeghorn66 i am 12 years old, and I appreciate all of this older music. I just like the sound of the raw instruments.. I dont like the sound of about 20 synthesizers, a drum machine, and a person that talks fast that claims to be singing... This music is so much better!!
@jimihendrixtribute Good for you young man! This period is one of two times in American history, the other being with the advent of Jazz in the late 1800's-early 1900's- when the most innovative music was also the most popular. Makes todays music pale by comparison. I remember I was your age in 1975 when alot of this was coming out and somehow KNEW I was lucky. Zep only did this on stage a few times, this version is one of those times. It was too hard to recreate on stage all the studio...
@jimihendrixtribute ...tricks they used to make it IMHO one of the greatest rock cuts of this era. For a great cover version check out Buckwheat Zydeco's version with Sonny Landreth, one of the greatest living slide guitarists--it SMOKES!!
i am 12 years old, and I appreciate all of this older music. I just like the sound of the raw instruments.. I dont like the sound of about 20 synthesizers, a drum machine, and a person that talks fast that claims to be singing... This music is so much better!!
Yes, it's true, only two live versions. Song is far too difficult to play live.
I have the other live version, it was played in Chicago (fitting enough), I believe it was '73, just going by memory here, I have the CD stored away somewhere. I think it is a better version than this one, but, it is not near the epic sound of the live version.

This song encompasses the greatest drum beat and guitar riff in my opinion. Page on the slide guitar with Bonham laying an incredible drum beat. Simply the best
first time I heard this song on the album I listened to it about 10 times in a row. I was blown away. I couldnt believe the sound of the drums, guitar, everything. I usually dont love a song the first time I hear it but this song floored me. @mystro810 It's possible to "discover" great art, writing and music through out your entire life, over and over again, that's why it's great. Kashmir changed my life when I first heard it in Feb of '75 when I was 15. Since that time, it and every song and performance in Zeppelin's catalog continue to grow and change with the passage of time, getting better and stronger with newer meaning. This power resides in all of us, great music enables us all to realize that power!
@mystro810 Exactly the same happened to me. I was randomly listening to Stairway to heaven, and suddenly i heard those badass drums, guitar and harmonica. I heard it one and another time, and have heard it many times since, and i will ever get bored of it. It's one of the most amazing songs ever, in my opinion.
This for me proves the real talent of Led Zeppelin, namely in Page's guitar playing. But in this song the harmonica courtesy of Plant means at least as much.
My fav. Zep song (together with 'Babe I'm gonna leave you' that is)
you are right-one time somebody sold me a bogus bootleg video of this song, which was the studio version with a film of all these ZEPPELINS being manufactured ect...
Jim sort of muffed the middle eight. Nonetheless this is pretty cool.
I think in order to recreate the drum sound on the studio version they put Bonzo's drumkit in a bigass pit that they hauled onstage, and they figured it was too much of a pain in the ass and dropped it from the set.
Now my question is, why did the Wanton Song get dropped?
how sweet would it be if they dropped like a 25 foot vistilite pipe around bonham and his kit. like a giant pipe thats see threw with an orange tint like his famous vistilite kit. and put the mikes at the top, to recreate the sound that would've been awesome
Oh, how I wish there was VIDEO footage of this song live. So far I have not seen anything. Feedback or something from John's bass guitar, or just powerful bass playing by John -- actually had to turn down my speakers because it hurt my ears.
It was difficult for them to recreate the same sound from the album live, just the 4 of them. They probably felt it wasn't worth the effort. I am glad to have found this though, I've been looking everywhere for a bootleg with this on there.
@fredzepp1 I am a drummer. I totally agree with you on John. I still get goose bumps listening to his drumming after 30 years. Proberly my fav drumming by John When The Leeve breaks. Then again might be msity mountian top, Fuck who knows lol
Bonham has apparently been voted as the person that people want brought back to life in rock, above both Freddie Mercury and Elvis. He was also voted as the greatest drummer over Neil Peart. John Henry Bonham is, and always will be, the single greatest drummer ever. He's done more for drumming than George Washington Carver did for peanuts.
@fredzepp1 I so totally agree. Every time those bombasting scales shake the house they sound like the stage is part of the drum kit. Led Zep musicians must a suffered from schin splints and fragemting bone syndrome...
When the levee breaks (M. Minnie L.Z. retake) = the HEAVIEST piece of music that ever was
Shhhhiiiit!
Check out Zepparella's version on Youtube (quite surprizing)
Agreed, and if you are the best in Led Zeppelin then you are the best of the absolute best. Zeppelin was a band with four revolutionary groundbreaking virtuosos.
Why does everything about Zepp. have to be linked to something satanic, I love all of their music. Mostly this and Kashmir...Do me a favor and get a life!!!!
Time. Dimensions. Light. Knowledge. I am myself, but awoke to a different world. Thanks for the tunes, Id like to invite you to come check out"Nightmare on Blog Street" a poem I wrote to infect the sane.
there is a performance during the 90s or in the 00s but it was with neil young and it was pretty cool. ALOT OF GUITARS + distortion=badass. Plant rips out a gibson or somthing half way and plays like 2 notes and then just hold it lol. typical plant.
@SlaytanicMegaforce I allready downloaded it from torrents :D i was in london and tried to find some bootlegs but i couldn't because cd shops are scared of being sued.
Unfortunately the sound quality sucks :(

My fav. Zep song (together with 'Babe I'm gonna leave you' that is)

I love this song but I don't see how this version is better?
Maybe if the recording was cleaner it might sound better, but the studio version sounds better to me IMO.

Ozzybeans 2 years ago
how sweet would it be if they dropped like a 25 foot vistilite pipe around bonham and his kit. like a giant pipe thats see threw with an orange tint like his famous vistilite kit. and put the mikes at the top, to recreate the sound that would've been awesome
ARFF2690 2 years ago
When all they'd need to do is send the drum mics through an Echorec.

Wanton Song was the the Opening number for both the '95 and '98 Page&Plant tours.

The studio recordings are for longevity and artistic respectability. Live performances are for the hard, sweaty rock and roll experience!
I Iove the guitar here, its sounds so rusty and gnarled, maybe representative of the yielding levee.
rocktobercock 2 years ago
Oh, how I wish there was VIDEO footage of this song live. So far I have not seen anything. Feedback or something from John's bass guitar, or just powerful bass playing by John -- actually had to turn down my speakers because it hurt my ears.

sometimes I am surprised that people don't realise that rock and roll is supposed to be rough and that the rougher the better.
like this is Bach or somin :P

This is rough and how the blues should sound.
The album is cleaner which makes for listening in the car, maybe, but thsi is the shit

It was difficult for them to recreate the same sound from the album live, just the 4 of them. They probably felt it wasn't worth the effort. I am glad to have found this though, I've been looking everywhere for a bootleg with this on there.

Bonham remains the greatest rock drummer that ever stepped on a stage.
fredzepp1 2 years ago 72
@fredzepp1 I am a drummer. I totally agree with you on John. I still get goose bumps listening to his drumming after 30 years. Proberly my fav drumming by John When The Leeve breaks. Then again might be msity mountian top, Fuck who knows lol
glebe3047 1 year ago

Agreed, and if you are the best in Led Zeppelin then you are the best of the absolute best. Zeppelin was a band with four revolutionary groundbreaking virtuosos.

there is a performance during the 90s or in the 00s but it was with neil young and it was pretty cool. ALOT OF GUITARS + distortion=badass. Plant rips out a gibson or somthing half way and plays like 2 notes and then just hold it lol. typical plant.

Pagey really nails the main riff live....the middle eight is a bit dodgy though. Shame the audio doesn't capture the booming drum and bass sound.
Overall though...awesome!
