You get a thousand caps when succeeding a speech check. The most you get from Lucas is 500. They're not real people so a true moral conscience should not come into play. Gameplay wise, Tenpenny tower has more to offer.

allow me to elaborate more. save inside the clinic and then talk to doc church. find the option that asks about the people in megaton. succeed the speech check, or take the medicine check if offered. Then go to the brass lantern. SAVE, then talk to leo stahl. Talk to him about his chem addiction. Convince him to quit it. You can either get the key to his stash in the water processing plant, for good characters, or buy chems from him if evil. Load to the previous saves if you fail either speeches

I remember playing this at a gaming cafe and left the vault with just 3 police batons. I wen to the side of the Megaton entrance and fought an animal. A guy said "Help, I have a bomb on me" or something, but shot the animal that was charging at me. He exploded after killing the thing, I took his weapon, and 3 raiders came by, ignoring me. I shot one of them after going back some distance, and the female use a flamethrower on me. I died awefully quickly, but couldn't find another gun since.
