Franz Schubert (1797-1829) wrote the music for "Ave Maria" in 1825 as a setting for words by Scottish author Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832). Scott published his long narrative poem, The Lady of the Lake. The heroine, Ellen, is forced to hide out in a mountain cave, along with her father, In that cave, she sings a song, "Hymn to the Virgin", a prayer to the Virgin Mary for help and comfort. This song occurs in Canto 3 of The Lady of the Lake,

@technocrash09 actually it is a catholic song while the melody wasn't actually written for "Ave Maria" it was written by schubert for a song from Walter Scotts poem The Lady Of The Lake. in the song the lady "Ellen" sings a prayer to mary which begins with the phrase "Ave Maria" or hail mary in latin which led to the song sung here you were however partially right it is a common misconception that the harp in the background was written for the song it wasnt it was written for the character Ellen
