what kind of paper and do u use and how do u fill in the shades.. coz m not a trained artist but i like drawing once in while but i dnt get a finish like this

hey can you please give any trying to get smooth tone change from light to dark gradually i use tortillon and kneaded eraser but finish is not that smooth it comes in blotches, though the apearance comes it is not that fine smooth finish.
